Hope (verse 3) The Bible says that King David was a man after God's own heart (1 Samuel 15:14; Acts 13:22). David loved the LORD (Psalm 18:1). David took refuge in the LORD(Psalm 18:2). David called upon the LORD (Psalm 18:3). David prayed to the LORD (Psalm 5:3). David gave thanks to the LORD with all of his heart (Psalm 9:1). David told others of the wonders of the LORD (Psalm 9:1). David was glad in the LORD(Psalm 9:2). David sang praise to the LORD (Psalm 9:2). David blessed the LORD (Psalm 16:7). David found his greatest joy in the LORD (Psalm 4:7). And because David was a man after God's own heart, he "found favor in God's sight" (Acts 7:46). God heard David's prayers (Psalm 18:6). God saved David from his enemies (Psalm 18:3). Now, surely, you know enough about human nature to know that David was not perfect. He was a man of war (1 Chronicles 29:3). He was a man of bloodshed (1 Chronicles 29:3). He committed adultery (2 Samuel 11). He committed murder (2 Samuel 11). He tried to cover up his sin (2 Samuel 12). And yet, David did repent. David confessed his sin to the LORD (Psalm 32:5). David pleaded for God's grace (Psalm 51:1). -

“One Of The Shortest Psalms To Read And The Longest To Learn” Psalm 131 21 May 2017 Charles Spurgeon said that Psalm 131 was one of the shortest psalms to read but the longest psalm to learn. How true! You can read this psalm in about 10 seconds, but it will take you your whole life to learn it. And by the time you get through this sermon, I think you’ll agree. Psalm 131 is not the shortest of the psalms, Psalm 117 is, but it’s pretty short and it does take a looooong time to learn- like the rest of your life. Psalm 131 shows us that we all struggle with fear and worry and anxiety and panic at times. We all do to some degree. And some of us really struggle with anxiety and panic attacks. So I know that there is not easy answer to all of these issues. Some people struggle with severe cases of anxiety and panic attacks that are debilitating. I had a pastor friend call me this week and tell me that he suffered a massive panic attack that sent him to the hospital. And in that moment, it would not have mattered if you quoted Psalm 131 to him because he was out of it. Of course, we want to share Scripture with people- it’s God’s word for crying out loud! But sometimes it isn’t as simple as just quoting a Scripture to someone. It may require medicine. Now, I don’t want to get into a debate on the validity of using medicine to help, but I will say this, that my friend said that it is helping him. -

Notes on Psalms 2015 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable Introduction TITLE The title of this book in the Hebrew Bible is Tehillim, which means "praise songs." The title adopted by the Septuagint translators for their Greek version was Psalmoi meaning "songs to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument." This Greek word translates the Hebrew word mizmor that occurs in the titles of 57 of the psalms. In time the Greek word psalmoi came to mean "songs of praise" without reference to stringed accompaniment. The English translators transliterated the Greek title resulting in the title "Psalms" in English Bibles. WRITERS The texts of the individual psalms do not usually indicate who wrote them. Psalm 72:20 seems to be an exception, but this verse was probably an early editorial addition, referring to the preceding collection of Davidic psalms, of which Psalm 72 was the last.1 However, some of the titles of the individual psalms do contain information about the writers. The titles occur in English versions after the heading (e.g., "Psalm 1") and before the first verse. They were usually the first verse in the Hebrew Bible. Consequently the numbering of the verses in the Hebrew and English Bibles is often different, the first verse in the Septuagint and English texts usually being the second verse in the Hebrew text, when the psalm has a title. ". there is considerable circumstantial evidence that the psalm titles were later additions."2 However, one should not understand this statement to mean that they are not inspired. As with some of the added and updated material in the historical books, the Holy Spirit evidently led editors to add material that the original writer did not include. -

Daily Devotions in the Psalms Psalm 129-133 Monday 12th October - Psalm 129 “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth”— let Israel now say— 2 “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me. 3 The plowers ploughed upon my back; they made long their furrows.” 4 The Lord is righteous; he has cut the cords of the wicked. 5 May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward! 6 Let them be like the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up, 7 with which the reaper does not fill his hand nor the binder of sheaves his arms, 8 nor do those who pass by say, “The blessing of the Lord be upon you! We bless you in the name of the Lord!” It is interesting that Psalm 128 and 129 sit side by side. They seem to sit at odds with one another. Psalm 128 speaks of Yahweh blessing his faithful people. They enjoy prosperity and the fruit of their labour. It is a picture of peace and blessing. And then comes this Psalm, clunking like a car accidentally put into reverse. Here we see a people long afflicted (v. 1-2). As a nation, they have had their backs ploughed. And the rest of the Psalm prays for the destruction of the wicked nations and individuals who would seek to harm and destroy Israel. It’s possible that this Psalm makes you feel uncomfortable, or even wonder if this Psalm is appropriate for the lips of God’s people. -

Criswell Proverbs for Teens Copyright 2012 by Jodi Green INTRODUCTION When I was in junior high school (middle school now days), I heard about Billy Graham’s practice of reading five chapters of Psalms and one chapter of Proverbs every day. Since there are 150 chapters of Psalms and 31 chapters of Proverbs, that meant he read the entire books of Psalms and Proverbs every month. And since Psalms teaches us to relate to God, and Proverbs teaches us to relate to our culture, Billy Graham’s idea seemed like a great one. Dr. Graham’s practice was to read the chapters of Proverbs according to the day of the month. For example, on the first day of the month he read Proverbs 1; the second day would be Proverbs 2, and so on. He read Psalms in order of the chapters, but we will discuss that more in the conclusion. My hope for this book is to begin training you to read a chapter of Proverbs every day. Proverbs is a book of wisdom, and we all need a daily dose of Biblical wisdom. Reading only one verse of scripture per day is like eating one spoonful of cereal for breakfast. It is still good for you, but you need a whole bowl to be nourished physically. In the same way, one verse of scripture is good for you, but you need more if you are to grow spiritually. -

Actually, this song is less about about my needing Jesus in my life as well. It was like a Christmas then it is about the return of Jesus. This will light going on in my head. I realized I was doomed to become clearer as we consider Psalm 105. hell without Jesus and was so relieved that He opened my heart to Him and I committed myself to reading Let me start with a question: How do we know the and studying His Word. GAISER Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota “Whenever the Psalter is abandoned, an incomparable treasure vanishes from the Christian church. With its recovery will come unsuspected power.”1 It is possible to agree with Bonhoeffer’s conviction without being naive about the prospect of this happening automatically by a liturgical decision to incorporate the psalms into Sunday morning worship. Not that this is not a good and needed corrective; it is. In many of those worship services the psalms had become nothing more than the source of traditional versicles—little snippets to provide the proper mood of piety in the moments of transition between things that mattered. Yet the Psalter never went away, despite its liturgical neglect. The church called forth psalms in occasional moments of human joy and tragedy, poets paraphrased them for the hymnals, and faithful Christians read and prayed them for guidance and support in their own lives. But now many Christian groups have deliberately re-established the psalms as a constitutive element in regular public worship. What will the effect of this be? Some congregations have found them merely boring-another thing to sit through—which suggests a profound need for creative thinking about how and where to use the psalms so people can hear and participate in the incredible richness and dramatic power of the life within them. -

Asterius On Psalm 11 Homily 2 As is well known, the tenth century Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) used for modern Bible translations has 150 psalms whereas the Psalter in the Septuagint (LXX) has 151 psalms. This homily is based on Psalm 11 LXX which is Psalm 12 MT. Most psalms have a title or superscription which may include names of composers or people to whom a psalm is committed, situational details, genre, and liturgical directions.1 Whether these superscriptions were part of the original composition is unknown. In any case, the superscriptions are incorporated into the psalm text in the Hebrew MT, such that when the text was versified in the sixteenth century, they were counted as the first verse. This incorporaton is already evident in some of the psalm fragments found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. For example, the oldest fragment 4QPsa (= 4Q83, mid second century BCE) shows ‘no special separation between title and text’.2 More tellingly, 4QpPsa (= 4Q171 Pesher Psalms) which contains commentary on Psalm 45, includes commentary on its superscription, as if it were part of the psalm proper.3 Early Christians who used the LXX also considered the psalm title or superscription to be part of scripture and would exegete it as such. The superscription for Psalm 11 LXX in the Hebrew MT reads: ‘To the leader: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.’ In the Greek LXX it reads: ‘To the end, upon the eighth. A Psalm of David’.4 Asterius spends considerable time in the first part of the homily expounding this title, and in particular the significance of the eighth day in redemption history. -

The Interpretation of Psalm 11 by W. H. Bellinger, Jr. Professor Bellinger of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, here demonstrates with a concrete example how the inter pretation of the Psalms must take into account both their original cultic and their later more 'spiritual' setting and shows how this approach can be helpful in interpreting them for today. PSALM 11 In Yahweh I seek refuge; how can you say to me: 'Flee to the mountains like a bird,l for look! The wicked bend the bows; they fit their arrow(s) on the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart. When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?' Yahweh is in his holy temple; his throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test humankind. Yahweh tests the righteous and the wicked2 and he hates the one who loves violence. He sends down upon the wicked coals ofl fire and brimstone and a raging wind will be the portion of their cup. For Yahweh is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; 95 the upright will behold his face. Psalm 11 provides a goad example of the difficulties encountered when seeking to determine the form and setting of a psalm, and consequently the text before us has not gone without some bizarre interpretations. 4 The worshipper appears to be addressing friends in the midst of persecution. WaIter Beyerlin has recently argued that the persecution stems from false accusation. 5 He understands the worshipper to have been granted asylum and to be seeking a divine decision in his case in a cult-sacral procedure of divine judgment; so he places the psalm in an institutional setting.
