Introduction By Daniel Gilbertson We are the first species able to consciously affect our own evolution. And, because of this, Homo sapiens will soon be extinct. After a reign of more than 300,000 years he will sacrifice himself beneath the greatest evolutionary wave ever. The prophets who predict doom from nuclear holocaust, energy starvation and biodetonation are wrong. Homo sapiens will succumb to the one threat he is file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/All%20Users/D...hy%20Leary/Leary,%20Timothy%20-%20Neuropolitics.txt (8 of 256)4/14/2004 11:27:18 PM file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/All%20Users/Documents/Books%...20Culture/Timothy%20Leary/Leary,%20Timothy%20-%20Neuropolitics.txt powerless to resist ^× a new species of man better suited to new worlds. In the pages that follow, Timothy Leary combines recent and future history into an optimistic and fascinating guide-book to evolutionary fulfillment. The unifying theme of his message is that we must understand ourselves as a developing life-force with a three billion year history and act on this to ensure our continued evolution. Part I, "The Twilight of Terrestrial Politics," is focused feedback. These chapters chronicle the exploits of a modern adventurer intent on observing and analyzing the decade which more than any other has changed our lives forever. Set against the sights, sounds and attitudes of the '60s, are fresh insights into the stories behind the books, magazine articles, newspaper headlines and TV newsflashes of this turbulent era. Leary's insider's perspective on amongst other things, Woodstock, the legal in- dustry, Calley, the C.I.A., the sexual domestication of the four-brained biped and the curse of the oval room, combine authenticity with the seductive appeal of deja-vu.

  • From Sacred Plants to Psychotherapy
From Sacred Plants to Psychotherapy: The History and Re-Emergence of Psychedelics in Medicine By Dr. Ben Sessa ‘The rejection of any source of evidence is always treason to that ultimate rationalism which urges forward science and philosophy alike’ - Alfred North Whitehead Introduction: What exactly is it that fascinates people about the psychedelic drugs? And how can we best define them? 1. Most psychiatrists will define psychedelics as those drugs that cause an acute confusional state. They bring about profound alterations in consciousness and may induce perceptual distortions as part of an organic psychosis. 2. Another definition for these substances may come from the cross-cultural dimension. In this context psychedelic drugs may be recognised as ceremonial religious tools, used by some non-Western cultures in order to communicate with the spiritual world. 3. For many lay people the psychedelic drugs are little more than illegal and dangerous drugs of abuse – addictive compounds, not to be distinguished from cocaine and heroin, which are only understood to be destructive - the cause of an individual, if not society’s, destruction. 4. But two final definitions for psychedelic drugs – and those that I would like the reader to have considered by the end of this article – is that the class of drugs defined as psychedelic, can be: a) Useful and safe medical treatments. Tools that as adjuncts to psychotherapy can be used to alleviate the symptoms and course of many mental illnesses, and 1 b) Vital research tools with which to better our understanding of the brain and the nature of consciousness. Classifying psychedelic drugs: 1,2 The drugs that are often described as the ‘classical’ psychedelics include LSD-25 (Lysergic Diethylamide), Mescaline (3,4,5- trimethoxyphenylathylamine), Psilocybin (4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) and DMT (dimethyltryptamine).

Here’s one he made in San Francisco in 1965, just a couple years afer the fellows at Harvard College dismissed him as a lecturer in clinical psychology:1 “I predict that within one generation we will have across the bay in Berkeley a Department of Psychedelic Studies. Tere will probably be a dean of LSD.» Two generations later, the University of California at Berkeley has yet to establish its Department of Psychedelic Studies. But, as is ofen the case with Timothy Leary, the high priest was half right in his prediction that mainstream academia would someday rediscover the value of psychedelic research. Harvard does not have a dean of LSD, but it now has something called “Te LSD Library.” Tat would be the Ludlow-Santo Domingo Library, an intoxicating collection housed at Harvard Library that includes many items from the Timothy Leary archive.

  • Political Process, Activism, and Health Dissertation
POLITICAL PROCESS, ACTIVISM, AND HEALTH DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Anne E. Haas, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Vincent Roscigno, Advisor Professor Timothy Curry ________________________ Professor Steven Lopez Sociology Graduate Program ABSTRACT Conventional women are saturated with mass media images depicting very thin, attractive women. These images impose ideals that are impossible for most women to meet in a healthy way. This study examines the substantive issue of women's body appearance, aging, and related health outcomes, including eating disorders, and how these might be mediated and improved by activist political process. Concepts from social movements and social-psychological perspectives are integrated into what I call the political process model—a model that delineates how activists become socialized and immersed in alternative political networks that influence subsequent activities, ideas, and identities. I use this model to test the ability of activists to sustain commitment to their causes, including those that relate to women’s bodies, over time. The process that connects the concepts in this model (i.e., pivotal events, collective identity, pivotal departures, empowerment, and health) provides the conceptual framework to which my analytic strategy derives. I address four research expectations using triangulated quantitative and qualitative methods, and draw original data sources. Original survey data on female activists and non-activists are used to test whether the two groups differ in their politics, daily routines, and several dimensions of health (e.g., use of conventional versus non-conventional medical care, eating habits, etc.).

  • Cultural Revolutionary I Knew Abbie Hoffman—Whom I Think
preface "I'M A B B I E HOFFMAN" Myths are the only news, and the only thing that stays true all the time is a lie. Abbie Hoffman, 1968 Cultural Revolutionary I knew Abbie Hoffman—whom I think of as the quintessential spirit of the sixties—for almost twenty years, and for much of that time I wasn't sure when he was acting, when he was for real, and when he was acting for real. I suppose that's why I have such contradictory feelings about him. Looking back at Abbie from the vantage point of the nine- ties, it seems to me that he was the first American cultural revolutionary in the age of television. He was a very funny and a very sad character who saw his life and times as a story that he could tell and retell again and again as he went along. The point, of course, was to inflate himself and deflate the established order. What most of us think of as "objective reality" didn't exist for him; while he managed to outwit it time and again, it finally caught up with him. In the end, Abbie the comedian became a tragic figure. He also embodied the sensibility called post- modern. Nowadays, postmodernism is a cliche that has lost most of its clout. But long before it entered the academic world, Abbie was a walk- ing, talking postmodernist. A great many critics have tried to define the term, but no one, it seems to me, has done it as well as the writer E.

Archived at ContERN Repository for Self-Archiving (CRESARCH) https://contern.org/cresarch/cresarch-repository/ Feb. 5, 2019. Wilson, Robert Anton Robert Anton Wilson (1932-2007) was an American writer, known for the Illuminatus! Trilogy (1975, co-written with Robert Shea) and the autobiographical Cosmic Trigger (1977). He had a considerable influence upon the popularisation of “invented” religions, conspiracy theories, and Chaos Magick. Wilson was involved in early Discordianism, a satirical religion invented in 1957 by Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley, two Californian high school friends. It was based upon light-hearted worship of Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, and the philosophical position that all order is illusory, and salvation lies in embracing chaos and silliness. Discordianism developed largely through correspondence with a slowly expanding circle of smart, young, (mostly) white, male atheists, including Wilson. The material developed was compiled by Hill and published as the Principia Discordia in 1969. Wilson’s contributions included some conspiracist material on the Bavarian Illuminati, references to writers HP Lovecraft and James Joyce, and the “23 Enigma”, which states that once you are aware of it, you will start to see the number twenty-three everywhere. Discordianism provided many of the characters and themes of Illuminatus!, which Wilson was writing at the time with Robert Shea. While working as associate editors for Playboy, the two became fascinated by the many letters the magazine received spinning elaborate conspiratorial narratives concerning the Illuminati, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Vatican and the Kennedys.

  • The 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness As a Model for Rhetorical Theory
Hendry/1 The 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness as a Model for Rhetorical Theory John Hendry Hendry/2 The 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness as a Model for Rhetorical Theory Introduction The connection between rhetoric and consciousness has been made mostly implicitly and in parts. Various scholars have made claims about the epistemic1 and ontological2 components of rhetoric, but few rhetorical theorists have directly attempted to link rhetoric to a more holistic view of consciousness. Perhaps the closest rhetoric has come to its own theorists of consciousness are Eric Havelock (The Muse Learns to Write, 1986) and Walter Ong (Orality and Literacy, 1982), whose work engages with the ways in which technological change and language have produced new forms of consciousness we may call rhetorical, but these studies of consciousness are constrained to particular epochs in history. While we may find useful analogies for modern living, neither Havelock nor Ong make claims about the current state of consciousness or its connection to the mediated rhetorical landscape of the twenty-first century. Ong’s central claim in Orality and Literacy is that “writing restructures consciousness” (77). He explains this change by saying that “the critical and unique breakthrough into new worlds of knowledge was achieved within human consciousness not when simple semiotic marking was devised but when a coded system of visible marks was invented whereby a writer could determine the exact words that the reader would generate from the text” (83). This insight, coming hundreds of years after the invention of writing and literacy, stands in stark contrast to 1 Robert Scott’s “On Viewing Rhetoric as Epistemic” (1967) produced a lively debate which drew in scholars like Michael Leff, Barry Brummett, and Sonja Foss over the years.
