Sitting Bull Collection

COPYRIGHTED BY BAILF.Y, DlX AND MEAD

Editor's Note: The South Dakota State Historical Society has a collection of twenty-four photographs, complete with captions, known as the Sitting Bull Collection. These photographs are stereoscopic views that, when viewed througli a stereoscope, have a tliree-dimensional effect. They were copyrighted in 1882 by Bailey, Dix and Mead of , . Because these views are also included in the Stanley J. Morrow photograpliic collection, it is possible that Morrow was the original photographer and that he sold at least these twenty-four views to Bailey, Dix and Mead. The Morrow Collection was compiled and organized between 1869 and 1881 and then offered for sale in 1881, either as a set or as individual views. However, the society has not been able to locate any information confirming the purchase of the photographs by Bailey, Dix and Mead. Letters were sent to the , the Museum of the American Indian, Yale University, the International Museum of Photography, and the Nebraska State Historical Society asking for information about this company. However, nothing could be found. The society received these stereoscopic photographs from Mrs. Leona Dix Wilber of Aberdeen in 1932 for twenty-five cents each. These views may be the only complete set of this collection in existence. The captions accompanying the photo- graphs are reproductions of the cutlines that aro found on the back of the stereoscopic views. Copyright © 1975 by the South Dakota State Historical Society.
