Adrienne Bolland Norberto Traub Gainsborg El 30 De Marzo De 1921” Instituto De Investigaciones Histórico Aeronáuticas De Chile
In the Shadow of Empire and Nation : Chilean Migration to the United
IN THE SHADOW OF EMPIRE AND NATION: CHILEAN MIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1950 By Cristián Alberto Doña Reveco A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Sociology History 2012 ABSTRACT IN THE SHADOW OF EMPIRE AND NATION: CHILEAN MIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1950 By Cristián Alberto Doña Reveco This dissertation deals with how Chilean emigrants who have migrated to the US since the 1950s remember and define their migration decision in connection to changing historical processes in both the country of origin and that of destination. Using mainly oral histories collected from 30 Chileans I compare the processes that led to their migration; their memories of Chile at the time of migration; the arrival to the United States, as well as their intermediate migrations to other countries; their memories of Chile during the visits to the country of origin; and their self identifications with the countries of origin and destination. I also use census data and migration entry data to characterize and analyze the different waves of Chilean migration to the United States. I separate each wave by a major historical moment. The first wave commences at the end of World War II and the beginnings of the Cold War; the second with the military coup of September 11, 1973; the third with the economic crisis of 1982; and the fourth with the return to democratic governments in 1990. Connecting the oral histories, migration data and historiographies to current approaches to migration decision-making, the study of social memory, and the construction of migrant identities, this dissertation explores the interplay of these multiple factors in the social constructions underlying the decisions to migrate. -

EIDAHL has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by Patrick M. Barr-Melej Professor of History Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT EIDAHL, BRAD T., Ph.D., December 2017, History Writing the Opposition: Power, Coercion, Legitimacy and the Press in Pinochet's Chile Director of Dissertation: Patrick M. Barr-Melej This dissertation examines the struggle between Chile’s opposition press and the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (1973-1990). It argues that due to Chile’s tradition of a pluralistic press and other factors, and in bids to strengthen the regime’s legitimacy, Pinochet and his top officials periodically demonstrated considerable flexibility in terms of the opposition media’s ability to publish and distribute its products. However, the regime, when sensing that its grip on power was slipping, reverted to repressive measures in its dealings with opposition-media outlets. Meanwhile, opposition journalists challenged the very legitimacy Pinochet sought and further widened the scope of acceptable opposition under difficult circumstances. Ultimately, such resistance contributed to Pinochet’s defeat in the 1988 plebiscite, initiating the return of democracy. -

Using original documents I gathered in research trips to Chile and Spain, I am able to reconstruct the debates that went on both sides of the Atlantic over funds, protection from ’ th pirates, and indigenous slavery that so defined Chile s formative 17 century. While my conclusions are unique, frontier residents from Paraguay to northern New Spain were also dealing with volatile indigenous alliances, threats from European enemies, and questions about how their tiny settlements could get and keep the attention of the crown. -
The Decolonization of Knowledge, and Being Mapuche in Chile1
The Decolonization of Knowledge, 1 and Being Mapuche in Chile Jorge Calbucura Associate Professor in sociology, Department of Social Work Mid Sweden Univer- sity. I research on indigenous people in the cities. My research focuses on the rights of the ILO Convention 169 and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In 2011, I started Forum for Indigenous Rights. The forum aims to iden- tify the knowledge, information and experiences in the field with particular focus on social work and Indigenous people. I identify myself as Indigenous: Mapuche. Abstract This study focuses on the exploration of the interrelationship of the imagined na- tional community made by collective myths. From the perspective of the colonial matrix of power theory the analysis focuses on that is, belong- ing to Indigenous People in Chile. I will highlight the dynamic inter-relationship of three myths: the myth of the foundation, the myth of the blood sacrifice, and the myth of ideological relationship. Introduction The history of Indigenous resistance to colonialism is closely linked to the military occupation of territories, the subjugation of its natives, and the imposition of a colonial power matrix of power. This power is embodied in three spheres: Control of the economy Control of the authority Control of knowledge and subjectivity By appropriating lands, natural resources, forms of government and military con- trol, as well as the forms of coloniality and being, one is in control of knowledge 27 Rapport_ReMindings_UU_TRYCK.indd 27 2014-05-06 14:49 production itself (Mignolo, 2009). Relating these three spheres within the coloni- al matrix of power occurs between the material domination, economy, authority, institutions, and the epistemic domination. -

To answer this question, this thesis examines the education system, with a focus on high schools and universities in Valparaíso, Chile. I argue that there are two competing discourses about the Pinochet administration - a majority, anti-dictatorship perspective and a minority, pro-regime position - which selectively emphasize differing aspects of the regime. The anti position focuses on human rights violations while the pro perspective puts greater weight on economic achievements. This maps onto Chilean high school institutions, with a majority of upper and upper-middle class students attending private schools and a majority of lower class students attending public schools. -

On the one hand, it investigates the impact external actors and international affairs had on Chilean politics up to and immediately following the brutal coup d’etat that overthrew Allende on 11 September 1973. On the other hand, it explores how the rise and fall of Allende’s peaceful democratic road to socialism affected the Cold War in Latin America and international affairs beyond. -

I could not have completed this task without the love and support of so many people in my life. I would like to thank my friends and family for their unconditional support through every high and low of this process. I would especially like to thank my father, Mr. Scott Senften. An engineer by training whose Spanish language skills encompasses only words related to ordering a drink; he helped his son complete a social science project by synthesizing data written completely in Spanish. I could not have completed this thesis without him. I love you dad. I would also like to thank the professors who have mentored and supported me throughout this process. I could not have asked for a better advisor for me than in Dr. Ana Velitchkova. She endured me through any crazy idea, doubts, and insecurities I had along this process. She also constantly reassured me and pushed me to achieve my full potential. I owe an incredible amount of gratitude to Dr. Simone Delerme who agreed to serve on my committee and found the time to read and provide critiques on found to make my thesis the best it could be. -
