Degree awarded June 2017 ii © 2017 Lindsey Waldrop iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Lindsey Waldrop Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures June 2017 Title: Tension and Trauma in Idle Talk under the Bean Arbor As a genre, the huaben 話本 short story reassured readers of a Heaven who punished and rewarded human actions with perfect accuracy. Yet in the years before the Ming 明 (1368-1644) collapse, the genre grew increasingly dark. Aina Jushi wrote Doupeng xianhua 豆棚閒話, or Idle Talk under the Bean Arbor (c. 1668), only a few years after the Manchus solidified their rule. The only full-frame story in pre-modern Chinese literature, the text is also notable for the directness with which it confronts societal and cosmological questions arising from the fall of the Ming dynasty. It was also the last significant huaben before the genre faded into obsolescence. My dissertation asks three questions. Why was this the last major collection of the genre? How do the form and the content work together? And what does Aina contribute to the Qing cosmological questioning through a genre obsessed with an ordered cosmos? I argue that the text deserves further study because of the beautiful complexity of its narrative structure and voices and its direct confrontation of the fall of the Ming. I also argue that Aina questions if there really is a moral Heaven that rewards and punishes human action and if there is any greater significance to virtuous action. His doubts about iv the presence of a moral Heaven increase as the text progresses but he is unwilling to completely discard Confucian relational ethics. This is shown by his loosening of the requirements of the huaben structure. The narratives become more incoherent and the content generally grows darker. By the final narrative, Aina drops the huaben form and presents an apathetic cosmos directly to the primary diegetic audience. The resulting cognitive dissonance causes the bean arbor to collapse and the audience to disperse. By its very nature the short story affords the writer the opportunity to introduce swiftly any developments in ideology, theme or style. Scholars have interpreted Chinese fiction published during 1979 as indicative of a "change" in the development of 20th century Chinese literature. This study examines a number of short stories from 1979 in order to determine the extent of that "change". The first two chapters concern the establishment of a representative database and the adoption of viable methods of interpretation. An important, although much neglected, phenomenon in the make-up of 1979 literature are the works which appeared in so-called "nonofficial" journals.

    Maria Khayutina [email protected] The Tombs of Peng State and Related Questions Paper for the Chicago Bronze Workshop, November 3-7, 2010 (, 1.1.) () The discovery of the Western Zhou period’s Peng State in Heng River Valley in the south of Shanxi Province represents one of the most fascinating archaeological events of the last decade. Ruled by a lineage of Kui (Gui ) surname, Peng, supposedly, was founded by descendants of a group that, to a certain degree, retained autonomy from the Huaxia cultural and political community, dominated by lineages of Zi , Ji and Jiang surnames. Considering Peng’s location right to the south of one of the major Ji states, Jin , and quite close to the eastern residence of Zhou kings, Chengzhou , its case can be very instructive with regard to the construction of the geo-political and cultural space in Early China during the Western Zhou period. Although the publication of the full excavations’ report may take years, some preliminary observations can be made already now based on simplified archaeological reports about the tombs of Peng ruler Cheng and his spouse née Ji of Bi . In the present paper, I briefly introduce the tombs inventory and the inscriptions on the bronzes, and then proceed to discuss the following questions: - How the tombs M1 and M2 at Hengbei can be dated? - What does the equipment of the Hengbei tombs suggest about the cultural roots of Peng? - What can be observed about Peng’s relations to the Gui people and to other Kui/Gui- surnamed lineages? 1. The Gardens have never looked better, our attendance is up and we have more member supporters than ever. The azalea and camellia bloom was spectacular with the weather cooperating to give us an extended spring bloom. It has been nice to see so many visitors enjoying the Gardens. The Moonlight Carillon Concert series was well attended, with the March concert drawing an audience of more than 350. With the daylight savings time change coming earlier this year, the concerts started with the setting sun so that guests could enjoy the Gardens in the sweet light of dusk. We started encouraging guests to picnic in the Gardens for these concerts and plan to introduce other changes to enhance the experience in the future. We have been working on a long range plan for the Gardens with several key points identified as goals. Improving customer service and the quality of our presentations are two of these goals. A large part of what we have to offer is the incredible experience our visitors enjoy. All aspects of the Gardens are being evaluated from the décor and food at the café, to the quality of our plant displays. We want the experience for our visitors to be unique, inspirational and enjoyable for everyone, every time. Gardening can truly be a celebration about the diversity of plants as we’ve seen in our monthly plant celebrations.
