School of the week: Ysgol Rhiwabon,

“Extending History beyond the curriculum”

History Department

At Ysgol Rhiwabon, the History department has extended the subject beyond the curriculum by running extra- curricular activities. Pupils in KS3 were invited to enter the Historical Writing Competition run by the Historical Association. Two entries were submitted by the department. One story was based in the Roman Empire, the other in Victorian . In addition, a " History through Film " Club has been set up, which enables students to experience the subject in a more informal format and has opened up historical debate. Examples of films watched include Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, A Knight’s Tale, and Titanic. As one Year 8 pupil states: “It was great at Film Club, because we were able to study areas of History that we weren’t covering in class. ” Field visits have also been initiated, with a Year 12 trip to Manchester University with Sovereign Education.

Katie and Deryn One Sixth Former commented “I found the trip beneficial to my course. The information given was of a high standard and, as there were a number of historians present, the variation of arguments and debates put forward were extremely helpful for my work." The pupils thoroughly enjoyed being able to experience History outside of the classroom. As one pupil stated after visiting the castle: “I think it’s great going on trips like this, because you can actually experience what it was like. We were taught the art of medieval dancing; given salted bread to eat, and then escorted to a dining hall for a banquet. Deryn and Katie were elected Baron and Baroness.” ** News piece - the Catholic Church: Fr. Moses Amune has been asked by his Bishop to move to Llandudno Parish on the 26th October - he will be missed!! Since arriving in Ruabon from Nigeria during one of the coldest spells several years ago, he has „gentled‟ his way into the heart of the community, not only through his church:

He joined the original Steering Group, set up by Council to bring the various groups in the community together. When the Steering Group had to close down because of the financial cuts, this was taken over by The Friends of Ruabon - Moses continued to attend these meetings and helped with the Ruabon Fete. He also helped Growing Ruabon in its project of the planting up of the Garden of Rest and has since, taken on the role of one of Ruabon‟s “Secret Gardeners” weeding the flower troughs in the High Street. ** On Friday 17th August, Fr. Anthony Nnamah arrives in the Parish to get to know everyone before the departure of Fr Moses Amune on the 26th October. **

On Thursday 15th September at 7.15pm, the Wrexham Area Civic Society will host a talk by Mick Dann, Deputy Project Director for HMP Berwyn on: “HMP Berwyn – its Building and Proposed Operations and Services”. Venue: AVOW, 21 Egerton Street, Wrexham. Further Information from: Secretary, Nick Roe email: [email protected]. New Land at Ruabon Cemetery – Preparing for the Future.

This is a photograph of the new section of Ruabon Cemetery. The area has been consecrated and is available to use for burials and the internment of ashes. Although the main area will not be required for some time the section nearest to the existing cemetery is available immediately, if required. The Cemetery Group, which is part of Ruabon Community Council (RCC) meets once a month, on a Saturday, to review the maintenance needs of the cemetery, and to advise and assist the groundsmen in their duties, with the aim of making the cemetery a more welcoming environment for all its visitors. All this is undertaken in their own time. The group has designed and constructed compost bins and introduced green waste bins as well as general waste bins in order to reduce the amount of waste which needs to be disposed of. Following the implementation of the system, the Council has reduced the cost of waste removal by approximately 40% and it is hoped, with the help of visitors to the cemetery disposing their waste in the appropriate bins, this cost will continue to fall. This saving will allow RCC to continue with their aim of continued improvement of the Cemetery. The Council has recently received a number of letters from visitors raising concerns regarding the apparent lack of maintenance to the new part of the cemetery. Maintenance continues to be undertaken by the groundsmen, but it is important for everyone in the community to understand that one of the main aims of RCC is that residents receive value for money. To this end, the Group has introduced a project for the cemetery extension, which after much hard work and planning, will eventually evolve into a wild flower meadow. The meadow will remain until such time that plots are needed for burials or the internment of ashes. The RCC does not often complement itself, but in the case of the Cemetery Group, fellow Councillors have readily acknowledged the continued hard work and innovative thinking of these members. (Thanks for this piece from Mike Blackshaw, Clerk and Finance Officer to the RCC)

Transport - Buses. Although now a reduced timetable, Route 6 was reinstated last week giving residents 4 services during the day between 10am and 4pm ** Other Bus Services came in for some criticism, but offers of help and understanding of the situation have come from further afield than WCBC. (Thanks to Mike Jones for his time and tenacity in highlighting transport problems (applicable to Ruabon) to the people who are listening and willing to help):

From: Mike Jones [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 07 August 2016 15:12 To: Lynne Milligan Cc: Geraint Morgan Subject: Ruabon station - Bus connections. Hi both Since GHA coaches went into administration the bus link with trains arriving at the station in both directions , has been very poor, particularly after 1800 hours. The station is on a major rail and road hub for tourists and local tourists from local communities. There needs to be clear advice to rail passengers that they may access bus services on the main road (bottom of station road) . I have advised local councillors and WCBC about this problem – very little has been done – although there does appear to be a better timetable o Friday , Saturday and Sunday evenings. I am sure that local communities would appreciate your help in the matter. NB. Ruabon is my home area. Best Mike. ** From: Lynne Milligan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, August 8, 2016 9:19 AM To: Mike Jones Cc: Geraint Morgan Subject: RE: Ruabon station - Bus connections. Thanks for this Mike. I’ll ask the Station Manager to have a look at options for signage on her next visit Lynne Legal Disclaimer - Arriva Trains Wales Ltd (given). Thanks Lynne. The community of Ruabon and surrounding communities would like ATW help in the restoration of bus services linked to ATW services between Shrewsbury and Chester after 2000 hours as used to be before the demise of GHA coaches.eg. After 2000 hours, anyone arriving at Ruabon Station would no longer be able to use public transport to travel to Mawr. Previously, they could use public transport either from the Station or from the bus stop on the main route, at the bottom of station road , commonly known as the Bridge End stop. Signage at the Station Exit’s and the Station Bus Stop would direct people to the main road bus stops and taxi companies. telephone numbers: This would help tourists and local tourists. The lead Councillor is David Bithell and the Council Officer is Andrew Mytton. Best Mike. ** From: Geraint Morgan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2016 10:09 AM To: Mike Jones Cc: Lynne Milligan Subject: RE: Ruabon station - Bus connections.
