Records of Wrexham Poor Law Union, 1837-1930 DENBIGHSHIRE ARCHIVES SERVICE GD/C Records of Wrexham Poor Law Union, 1837-1930 Prior to 1834, poor relief was administered by individual parishes. Churchwardens and Overseers were responsible for collecting poor rates and allocating relief. The 1834 Poor Law Act (later known as the 'New Poor Law') led to the creation of Poor Law Unions across England and Wales. Wrexham Poor Law Union was founded on 30th March 1837 and the Union workhouse was built in 1838 on Croesnewydd Road. The Union was administered by the Board of Guardians comprising of representatives from each constituent parish. Constitution: Abenbury Fawr, Acton, Allington, Bersham, Bieston, Borras Hovah, Borras Riffri, Broughton, Brymbo, Burton, Cacca Dutton, Dutton y Bran, Dutton Diffeth, Erlas, Erddig, Esclusham Above, Esclusham Below, Erbistock, Eyton, Gourton, Gwersyllt, Gresford, Holt, Llay, Marchwiel, Minera, Pickhill, Ridley, Royton, Ruabon, Sesswick, Stansty, Sutton, Wrexham Abbot, Wrexham Regis, co. In 1929 The Local Government Act was passed which abolished Poor Law Unions in both England and Wales. Responsibility for public assistance was then passed to county councils and county boroughs. Following this act, Wrexham Workhouse became Plas Maelor Public Assistance Institution in 1930. After the Second World War, this site became part of the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. For records relating to public assistance see CD/PA. NB: Poor Law Union records containing personal or sensitive information are closed for 75 years under the Data Protection Act. • Bersham Colliery
Bersham Colliery Poems by Keith Hett Bersham Pit Bottom It was cold, it was wet, it was noisy and rotten, But I cherish the memory of Bersham Pit Bottom. It's all over now, but was good while it lasted, I remember Mark Davis, his dad, Fred the Bastard. I sit quietly, and I think now and then, Haydn Overcoat, Harold Jones, Tommy Three Ten. There was Emyr, Eric, John the Whip and Gordon, Mike Hett, McGoo and Big Dennis Morgan. Gary Challinor, Elly, Big Joe and Herr Flick, Derrick Ruabon, alias Derrick the Brick. He would have a few pints and show off his trick, And all he would need was a window and brick. The line that he told the judge was the best: "I'm losing my job, and I got so depressed" They were all rough and ready, small, some burly, Ten pints, Tommy Reid, Mike Devany and Shirly. Ruben Whally, Pete Jones, and Bob the Brick, Good men to work with, through thin and thick. They were all good comrades, honest and true, Except Jacky Pem, a Conservative Blue. John Edwards shouts: "One more each side," And there's a mad rush to be on the first ride. Where else could you find men like Lilly and Lucas? They're as wise as the man from China, Confucious. Then there was Alf, if you asked for a lift, You wouldn't get one if you waited all shift. Down the level would stroll old Ken Pockets, At his leisurely pace, carrying spanners and sockets. The pits standing, and the blowers gone wonkey, There's a jinx down there and it's that Kevin Donkey.

  • September 2009
Volume 11. Issue 9 September 2009 Overton’s Free Newspaper - issued monthly DIGITAL SWITCHOVER DEADLINE! Overton is positioned right on the edge of three television regions and homes will have chosen to receive TV programmes from one of a variety of transmitters, from Wales, Granada or Central. Therefore there are different dates for the Digital Switchover according to which way your aerial points and which stations you watch. The deadline for the Digital Switchover if you receive BBC Wales, ITV Wales, & S4C is 28th October 2009, for those receiving BBC Northwest and Granada, the deadline is 4th November 2009. and for BBC Midlands and Central (from the Wrekin transmitter) the deadline is not until 2011. So what does this mean for all of us? It means that if you still have an older analogue television, when the analogue signal is switched off you won’t be able to receive any programmes. This doesn’t mean you have to throw out your old TV. There are many ways to continue viewing and some of them are quite cheap. You should have received through the post the leaflet from Digital UK telling you in detail all the options. These can be divided into those that require a one-off payment and those that require a monthly subscription. The details are as follows: - FREEVIEW Digital box from £25.00 More than 40 digital channels Digital TV from £150.00 ONE-OFF FREESAT £150 including minidish, More than 230 digital channels PAYMENT FROM SKY viewing card and standard Skybox installation FREESAT Digital boxes from £50, More than 100 digital channels Dish installation (if required) from £80 SKY From £17—£47 a month Up to 160 digital TV channels plus depending on package, more than230 free to air channels MONTHLY installation costs from £30 SUBSCRIPTION Other suppliers include VIRGIN; BT VISION; TISCALI; TOP-UP TV; WRIGHTS RADIO RELAY LTD with packages including telephone and broadband internet services.

  • Wrexham Unitary Development Plan
Wrexham Unitary Development Plan Monitoring Report 2004-5 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This is the third Unitary Development Plan Monitoring Report produced by Wrexham County Borough Council, in accordance with the requirements of the Welsh Assembly Government. It covers the year 2004-5 and also looks at the general context and long term trends. Among the key findings of the report are: The Wrexham Unitary Development Plan: the Wrexham UDP, which sets out policies and proposals for the development and use of land in the County Borough up to 2011, was adopted on 14th February 2005. Housing: there were 395 housing completions in 2004-5, slightly below the average since 1996 of 420. The UDP policy figure is 385 dwellings per annum. The County Borough had a housing land supply in 2004 of 7.10 years, well above the minimum of 5 years required by Planning Policy Wales. Employment: the take up of employment land in 2004-5 was 7.1 hectares, compared with the average since 1996 of 6.9 hectares per annum, and the UDP policy figure of 20 hectares per annum. Shopping: Details of the non food retail warehousing scheme on the former Carlsberg Tetley site were approved by the Council in 2004, and the development is now under construction. A major retail development at the Eagles Meadow site in Wrexham was granted planning permission in July 2005. Wrexham is ranked as the third most important shopping centre in Wales, and 101st in the UK. Transport: Construction of the Wrexham Industrial Estate access road was delayed by the decision of the Welsh Assembly Government not to approve the necessary Compulsory Purchase Orders.

Desktop Study: Access to St Edith’s, Shocklach ii 10 March 2017 The potential re-routing of access to St Edith’s church, Shocklach One method of tracing former boundaries and track ways in the landscape is to look at the angles of existing field boundaries and their anomalies. These may reveal echoes of previous field shape, size or orientation. The modern approach to St Edith’s church down Church Road has a dog leg shape with two right-angled bends. This is not logical, as there is no apparent need for this road shape. The road does not go round an obstacle and does not appear to align with anything in the landscape. According to Peter Burdett’s 1777 map1 of Shocklach, there was a track way running east directly north of St Edith’s church to a crossroads and then following on in a north- easterly direction towards Grafton Hall. (See below). Church Road, with its distinctive corners, is not marked. Part of Burdett's 1777 map of Church Shocklach Part of the 1839 Tithe Map for Church Shocklach The track on Burdett’s map does not appear on Greenwood’s 1819 map of Church Shocklach, Bryant’s 1831 map or the tithe map of 1839 (see above), which show the present road with the dog leg.
