And yet it is a truly- important work destined to have a great educational effect. It is a history of India's peaceful- struggle for liberation under Gandhi's guidance. All that happened there came about in our time — under our very eyes. What makes the book into a most effective work of art is simply the choice and arrangement of the facts reported. It is the skill pf the born historian, in whose hands the various threads are held together and woven into a pattern from which a complete picture emerges. How is it that a young man is able to create such a mature work? The author gives us the explanation in an introduction: He considers it his bounden duty to serve a cause with all his ower and without flinching from any sacrifice, a cause v aich was clearly embodied in Gandhi's unique personality: to overcome, by means of the awakening of moral forces, the danger of self-destruction by which humanity is threatened through breath-taking technical developments. The threatening downfall is characterized by such terms as "depersonalization" regimentation “total war"; salvation by the words “personal responsibility together with non-violence and service to mankind in the spirit of Gandhi I believe the author to be perfectly right in his claim that each individual must come to a clear decision for himself in this important matter: There is no “middle ground ". -

The Complete translation of Gandhi’s repertoire resulted in the formation of subversive groups, or Contentious Communities, whiCh shared the Common goal of desegregation and Cultural integration of the southern black population. These Contentious Communities regrouped in nonviolent efforts, and interaCted as a groupusCule with the same ideology. This adaptation of nonviolent ideology and strategy also recently occurred in what is known as the 15M movement in Spain. The association centered on the status of Puerto Rico as a colonial possession of the United States. The nationalists argued that Puerto Rico the island’s definition as a U.S. possession violated their sovereignty and called for aggressive resistance against the United States after attempting to initiate change through the electoral process in 1930. Campos developed his brand of nationalism through collaborations with independence activists from India and Ireland while a student at Harvard. Despite the Puerto Rican nationalists’ rhetorically aggressive stance against U.S. imperialism, conversation occurred with groups of Americans who disapproved of their country’s imperial objective. -

Although many have felt the US black experience to have obvious parallels in India, there has been a fundamental disagreement about whether being black is comparable to being colonized or to being untouchable. By examining these two competing visions, this essay introduces new topics to the study of black internationalism, including the caste school of race relations, B. R. Ambedkar’s anti-caste movement, and the changing significance of India for Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1999 UNESCO published a short book, intended for a general audience, comparing the careers of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mohandas K. Gandhi and noting the obvious parallels in their use of nonviolence. Four years later the Motilal Bhimraj Charity Trust put out a similar book, also comparing black politics to Indian politics, although with one major difference. Instead of casting Gandhi as the Indian analogue to King, as UNESCO had done, it cast B. R. Ambedkar, a leader of untouchables and one of Gandhi’s most formidable opponents.1 The difference is not trivial. Gandhi, the hero of the first book, stands as the implicit villain of the second, for Ambedkar believed that the greatest obstacle to the full flourishing of untouchables was the Mahatma himself. -

Lessons in Non-violent Civil Disobedience From the life of M. K. Gandhi And His Legacy By Arun J. Mehta 1 Preface There are many armed conflicts going on all around the world everyday. Many countries have amassed so many nuclear weapons that they can destroy all life on earth many times over. Some nations have already used these weapons of mass destruction to kill hundreds of thousands of civilian children, women, and men. Too many nations are spending enormous amounts of money and other resources on developing, acquiring, and using their military might while hundreds of thousands of their citizens go hungry. The ‘military industrial complex’ and powerful media are manipulating and / or controlling major policies in many democratic and not so democratic governments to spend billions of dollars in acquiring arms and creating conflicts. A lot of us would like to change the world for better but do not know ‘how’. Life of Mohandās K. Gāndhi can be a good ‘role model’ to study and emulate. He was a very scared, shy, scrawny, ordinary child and a failure as a young lawyer. By his own admission he was: “I claim to be no more than an average man with less than average ability.” How did he transform himself from a tongue-tied lawyer to a fearless leader of four hundred million people in their successful fight for independence from the brutal, well armed, and established British Empire? His transformation was so great, Albert Einstein said: “For generations to come...people will scarcely believe that such a one as this, ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” Who guided him? Who were his guru-s (teachers)? Can we learn from his life? He said: “I have not the shadow of a doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have, if he or she would make the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith.” He did not have one single person who can be called his guru. -

Out of this union was produced the Gitanjali Song Cycle . This paper presents an analy- zation in which certain fundamental musical characteristics of Carpenter are made known. It is interesting to note the similarities between Carpenter and Tagore. Both men were born in aristocratic families, not lacking in wealth or social position. Both were religious, sensitive, and humane. Tagore sought international understanding among people, and in this same respect Carpenter has brought American thought into closer rapport with the poems of Tagore and William Sharp, with Negro folklore and Classic and Romantic ideals of older civilizations. Both men have been described as conservative. In the case of Carpenter, he belonged with those who were conservatives at heart, but who nevertheless were progressive. -

Thank you for your consideration.] SUGGESTED COMPONENTS OF THE POTENTIAL SERIAL NOMINATION At these exemplary Civil Rights Movement Sites from across the southeastern United States, nonviolent protests over racial segregation in the public sphere culminated in extraordinary events of global significance that forced open the American system to all its citizens regardless of race, color, religion, sex or national origin and represented to the world the universal principles of freedom, democracy, and equality. The property consists of a suggested thirteen complementary sites from among the more than three hundred historic places across the nation associated with the postwar social movement to end legal white supremacy. Each of the sites bears unique testimony to the African American freedom struggle over racial discrimination, either in segregated schools, separate public accommodations, or the electoral process. While outwardly no different than the thousands of other mundane sites once segregated across the region, the suggested thirteen components of the potential serial nomination became catalysts for change because of the events associated with them that turned these otherwise nondescript churches, schools, houses, and businesses into internationally-recognized crucibles of race reform.
