Recensioni . 253 6 PRESENTAZIONE Cari lettori, Ho il vivo piacere di rivolgere per la prima volta il mio saluto cordiale a quanti seguono con amicizia la vita delle Chiese Orientali Cattoliche dalle pagine del SICO (Servizio Informazioni Chiese Orientali). Ringrazio cordialmente tutti coloro che riservano ad esse la loro sollecitudine, facendosi promotori di una più approfondita conoscenza della loro identità e dei tesori della spiritualità orientale, come della missione che il Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II e i Papi hanno loro affidato. Il presente numero dedica molto opportunamente una speciale attenzione al novantesimo anniversario della fondazione della no- stra Congregazione e del Pontificio Istituto Orientale, che è stato onorato dal Santo Padre Benedetto XVI con la sua storica visita alla sede del dicastero il 9 giugno 2007, festa liturgica per i latini del grande Sant’Efrem Siro, e con l’udienza concessa al Palazzo Apostolico nella festa di San Nicola di Mira, il 6 dicembre 2007, alle Autorità Accademiche, ai Docenti, agli Studenti e agli Amici del PIO. Negli interventi pontifici per le due circostanze troviamo l’esor- tazione alla conoscenza più approfondita delle venerabili tradizioni dell’Oriente cristiano. È un invito rivolto agli orientali, prima di tut- to, perché, sempre più coscienti e fieri del loro patrimonio ecclesia- le, ne offrano conoscenza alla Chiesa latina. La Chiesa intera ne trarrà beneficio perché sarà resa partecipe della multiforme sapienza dell’unico Spirito di Cristo. È lo Spirito Santo che ha suscitato fin dall’antichità le mirabili risposte delle Chiese alla Divina Parola. Tali risposte si sono sedimentate nelle tradizioni liturgiche, spirituali, culturali e disciplinari, le quali cu- stodiscono la fervida impronta della feconda irruzione del Vangelo nella storia. Per tale motivo il Papa nella citata visita alla Congregazione ha ricordato che le Chiese Orientali sono « custodi viventi delle origini cristiane», aggiungendo che senza il riferimento a quelle origini non c’è futuro per la Chiesa Santa di Dio. 9 Il mio grazie ai lettori del SICO è doveroso per l’attenzione all’Oriente cattolico che essi contribuiscono a diffondere. Al grazie si unisce l’auspicio che possano aprirsi nuovi orizzonti personali di interesse e di vicinanza a favore delle nostre amate Chiese. Esse hanno bisogno del conforto fraterno di tutta la Chiesa nella loro missione resa impegnativa dalle condizioni di povertà e di insicu- rezza che non raramente incontrano. Il mio pensiero colmo di affetto e di incoraggiamento va perciò alla Terra Santa, all’Iraq e al Libano, come alle altre regioni medio- rientali, che soffrono per la mancanza di una stabile pace. Le esorto a perseverare nella fedeltà di cui hanno dato prova e so di potermi fare interprete in tal modo dei sentimenti di ammirazione di tutti i lettori. Desidero, soprattutto, rinnovare il mio grazie a Dio e al Santo Padre per la possibilità di condividerne da vicino le gioie e le prove che mi è stata concessa con la nomina a Prefetto. Proprio il grazie e la fervente supplica di pace ho posto nel cuore della Santa Madre di Dio, iniziando il mio servizio alle Chiese Orientali. Ho, infatti, reca- to con me la sua Icona e l’ho collocata nel salone di accoglienza della Congregazione. La troviamo raffigurata sulla copertina del presente numero del SICO. Nella festa di San Tommaso Apostolo, Evangelizzatore dell’India, il 3 luglio 2007, ho acceso davanti a quella Sacra Immagine una lampada come invito ad implorare con la Santa Vergine Maria il dono della pace di Cristo per l’Oriente e per il mondo intero. VISITA DEL SANTO PADRE ALLA CONGREGAZIONE PER LE CHIESE ORIENTALI 9 giugno 2007 Sabato 9 giugno 2007 — significativamente nel giorno in cui la Chiesa latina ricorda Sant’Efrem — il Santo Padre si è recato in visita alla Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali per celebrare il novantesimo anniversario della sua istituzione ad opera di Papa Benedetto XV. Sua Santità Benedetto XVI ha raggiunto in tarda mattinata la sede della Congregazione, nel palazzo progettato dal Bramante, ori- ginariamente edificato sull’antica piazza San Giacomo (detta Scos- sacavalli), e ora sito al numero 34 di via della Conciliazione. Il Papa è stato accolto nel cortile interno dal Cardinale Prefetto Ignace Moussa I Daoud, dall’Arcivescovo Segretario Antonio Ma- ria Vegliò, da Mons. Krzysztof Nitkiewicz, Sotto-Segretario, e da Mons. Maurizio Malvestiti, Capo-Ufficio. Accompagnavano Benedetto XVI il Cardinale Tarcisio Bertone, Segretario di Stato; l’Arcivescovo Leonardo Sandri, Sostituto della Segreteria di Stato; l’Arcivescovo James Michael Harvey, Prefetto della Casa Pontificia; Mons. Paolo De Nicolò, Reggente della Pre- fettura della Casa Pontificia; Mons. Georg Gänswein, Segretario particolare del Santo Padre; Mons. Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki, della Segreteria particolare del Santo Padre. Dopo la visita della splendida Cappella bizantina del Santissimo Salvatore, opera del Padre Girolamo Leussnik, O.S.B., e prima di raggiungere gli uffici del Dicastero, il Papa ha salutato il Vescovo Cipriano Calderón Polo, Preposto del Palazzo del Bramante e i Ret- tori dei Pontifici Collegi e Istituti di Formazione orientali di Roma. Nella sala di rappresentanza della Congregazione, detta Sala dei Papi, Benedetto XVI ha incontrato i Superiori e tutti gli Officiali e il personale della Congregazione, che ha poi salutato personalmente. Con particolare affetto il Papa si è rivolto al Cardinale Ignace Moussa I Daoud, che era stato nominato Prefetto il 25 novembre 2000, succedendo al Cardinale Achille Silvestrini. 13 Nel suo discorso Benedetto XVI ha ricordato la situazione di grave difficoltà che vivono quotidianamente i cristiani in tante parti del mondo: « Come padre e pastore — ha detto il Papa — sento il dovere di elevare a Dio una fervida preghiera e di rivolgere un acco- rato appello a tutti i responsabili perché ovunque, dall’Oriente al- l’Occidente, le Chiese possano professare la fede cristiana in piena libertà. Ai figli e alle figlie della Chiesa sia concesso ovunque di vi- vere nella tranquillità personale e sociale: siano garantiti dignità, ri- spetto e futuro ai singoli e ai gruppi, senza pregiudizio alcuno per i loro diritti di credenti e di cittadini. Dalle mie labbra si leva oltre- modo accorata l’invocazione di pace per la Terra Santa, l’Iraq, il Li- bano… Possano le Chiese e i discepoli del Signore rimanere là dove li ha posti per nascita la Divina Provvidenza; là dove meritano di ri- manere per una presenza che risale agli inizi del cristianesimo ». Visitando la Congregazione, il Papa ha inteso proseguire il pel- legrinaggio al cuore dell’Oriente che Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha proposto nella Lettera Apostolica Orientale Lumen: « Ho idealmen- te iniziato tale pellegrinaggio assumendo il nome di un Papa che tanto amò l’Oriente. E, aprendo ufficialmente il Servizio Petrino del Vescovo di Roma, mi sono raccolto presso il sepolcro dell’Apostolo chiamando accanto a me i Patriarchi orientali in comunione con il Successore di Pietro. […] Infine, il viaggio apostolico in Turchia, indimenticabile per il commovente abbraccio con la comunità catto- lica e per il suo significato ecumenico e interreligioso, ha costituito un ulteriore momento di speciale fecondità nel mio pellegrinaggio al cuore dell’Oriente». Il Santo Padre ha ringraziato gli orientali « per la fedeltà pagata col sangue, di cui restano pagine mirabili lun- go i secoli fino al martirologio contemporaneo » ed ha assicurato di voler rimanere al loro

It is a great event in the life of the Church. It is a question, indeed, of creating new Cardinals, who will then be part of the Sacred College, of those whom the Sovereign Pontiffs have as their main advisers and helpers in the government of the universal Church. Above all, according to the established norms, upon them falls the right and the duty to elect the Roman Pontiff, the successor of him whom Christ constituted the "lasting and visible source and foundation of the unity both of faith and of communion" (Constit. Lumen Gentium, 18). Although the number of those who are added to this College today is relatively small—as you know, there exist some limits with regard to the number of Cardinals—nevertheless also these Revered Brothers of ours, who are about to be enrolled in the Senate of the Roman Pontiff, if this term can be used, represent the universal Church in a certain way. 1. It is not without reason and significance that we have convened this chosen gathering today, at the end of the month of June. It is well known that our Predecessor, of unforgotten memory, Pope Paul VI, often gathered the Cardinals in his presence about this time and addressed very serious words to them, sometimes also for the nomination of new members of the Sacred College.

Eparch of Toronto and Eastern Canada September 27, 2007 RE: The new intended sale of the MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD MONASTERY Dear Bishop Stephen, Glory to Jesus Christ! We, the benefactors, financial supporters and extended spiritual lay community of the Most Holy Mother of God Monastery in Orangeville, Ontario, have learned from Your Grace's letter of notification to Father Marian Struc, the newly appointed spiritual leader of the Monastery, of the intention of the Eparchy to sell the Marian Shrine to the Coptic Orthodox Church as of January 14th, 2008. The main reasons given for the new sale are the ongoing mortgage arrears to the Cistercians, and the imminent danger of losing the Monastery to foreclosure. We would like to draw attention to three affirmations contained in this letter, which, according to our knowledge, do not reflect the true nature of the situation, and which require further explanation. 1. The clear attempt to degrade the true spiritual value of the Mother of God Monastery as an active Marian Shrine and place of ongoing pilgrimage, referring to it in the letter as a "mission parish". According to our information, a mission parish is characterized by definite privileges, such as the right to administer the Sacraments of Baptism, Marriage, and the celebration of funerals, while, at the same time, the activity is restricted in scope to its own membership. This is certainly not the reality of the Mother of God Monastery. As holy ground sanctified by many years of monastic prayer, the Monastery continues to function as an active eparchial Marian Shrine, characterized by the preservation of the Studite Tradition in its ongoing liturgical prayer, and its openness to all Christian pilgrims.
