Lieutenant’s Corner—These Testing Times

Dear Knights & Dames,

I hope this newsletter finds you all well. My thoughts and prayers remain with all of you as continues to be challenged with COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreaks. The continued uncertainty about the future is challenging for everyone. In particular we need to remember our members and their families in hotspot postcodes.

I have been incredibly impressed by how our clergy and their parishioners have embraced zoom and social media and how they continue to creatively engage their parishioners in these challenging times. We had planned to have a virtual pilgrimage over zoom in July and then we reconsidered since we thought we would be back to 50 parishioners/members for our August mass. At present it is really difficult to predict if we can go ahead with this mass.

We were all delighted to hear that Knight Julien O’Connell was awarded the Medal of the Order (OM) of Australia in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his exemplary service to the community, in particular acknowledging his contributions to health, the aged care sector and to higher education. He was previously awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2012 in honour of his work in the community.

On the 27th of June we heard the wonderful news that had appointed Monsignor Gregory Charles Bennet, former Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, as the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Sale in eastern Victoria. Many of us know Monsignor Greg and recognise his many years of service to the Church here in Melbourne. While we are sad to see him leave Melbourne we all recognise the gifts he will bring the Diocese of Sale.

In May it was announced that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Mark Edwards the sixth Bishop of Wagga Wagga, a diocese that stretches from Griffith to Tocumwal and Albury to Tumbarumba. Bishop Mark is very well known in Melbourne for his support of youth and young adults. In accepting his appointment, Bishop Mark expressed his gratitude and humility to the Holy Father: ‘I am deeply humbled by this appointment and wish to express my thanks and good wishes to all the people of Melbourne, with whom I have been for the last six years. As Pope Francis often reminds us, we stand at the edge of a new era. We must continually ask ourselves, “How are we to be Church? How are we to be effective missionary disciples and share the Good News in the context of 21st century Australia?”

As Knights and Dames of the EOHSJ we are also being asked how we can be effective missionary disciplines. I would like to thank and acknowledge those who have contributed to our Holy Land appeal. We raised $11,500 for the Holy Land appeal. If you would still like to contribute to the appeal please make contact with our treasurer, Knight Andrew Price and he can facilitate your donation.

As you know, we had to postpone our EOHSJ information night for potential new members. I am grateful to those who have connected with potential new members. I would be very grateful if you can please continue to engage with potential members and I am happy to speak to them at any time. Can you please share with them the information on page 18 of this newsletter which provides potential members with an overview of the order and details on what is required to become a member. Ideally we need to have all applications sent to the Commission in by the end of July.

We need to continue to pray for medical staff and all those who are working under great pressure to support our community. I hope all of you remain safe and may God bless all of you during these challenging times

Warmest best wishes,

Agnes Sheehan, DCHS Lieutenant

Our Lady Queen of Palestine

It is with great joy that the Feast of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine, is celebrated in all the Lieutenancies of the Equestrian Order around 25 October – the exact date of the Feast according to the liturgical calendar. It was Patriarch Luigi Barlassina (1920-1947), on the occasion of his solemn entry into the Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre on 15 July 1920, and the of the diocese to Mary, who invoked the title of “Queen of Palestine” for the first time. The special relationship of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepul- chre dates back to the pontificate of John Paul II. In 1983, 50 years after the institution of the Feast, Saint John Paul II– addressing the Knights and Dames of the Lieutenancies of Northern and Central Italy – urged them to be witnesses of Christ in everyday life and to continue the work of the Order in the Holy Land under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ten years later, in 1993, the then Grand Master of the Order, Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio, asked Saint John Paul II to declare of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine, Patroness of the Order. The Holy Father replied on 21 January 1994 by a decree granting the request. PRAYING MARY FOR PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND Our Lady, Queen of Palestine, extend your hand over the Holy Land and over all who live there: Jews, Muslims, Druze and Christians, Palestinians, Israelis, migrant workers and refugees. Our Lady, intercede for us all and especially for the Church, the Body of your Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord. We have been sent to preach Good News to all in the land that is yours and His, the land of the patriarchs, kings, prophets, apostles and of the first community formed to walk in the way of your Son, the Mother Church of Jerusalem. This mission needs the courage and the perseverance, the wisdom and the faith that were yours, pray for us. On your knees He, who was your Lord and Master, learnt to speak and to pray, to act and to obey. We ask you to teach us to speak and to pray, to act and to obey today in the land called to be holy. In the midst of war and hatred, walls, occupation and discrimination, fear and rejection, instruct us how to be instruments of justice and peace, pardon and reconciliation. We affirm with you that he is our peace. Show us the way to incarnate in our life as Church both fidelity to your Son and an embracing love for all in this land, especially for those who are the poorest and the most excluded, the homeless, the refugees, the prisoners, those who are maltreated, oppressed and are vic- tims of injustice. Our Lady, Queen of Palestine, you are our mother, given to us by your Son on the Cross. With you, we are called to be witnesses to the Resurrection that already heralds His Kingdom. Modeling ourselves on you, we ask Him to anoint us as Spirit filled proclaimers of the Good News that He has vanquished death by His death on the Cross and has given life to those in the tombs. May we, members of His Body the Church, be living signs that point to the Kingdom that is already among us. Amen. Mother Mary, Queen of Palestine, pray for us.

Bishop Mark Edwards appointed to Wagga Wagga The Jerusalem Cross Publications

Bishop Edwards, who will turn 61 next month, was born in Indonesia and grew up in Adelaide, Darwin and Melbourne’s southeast, at- tending St Leonard’s Primary School and Mazenod College. Mazenod was founded by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the order he would eventually join.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1986 and has held lead- ership positions within the Australian Province of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was appointed of Melbourne on November 7, 2014, and ordained bishop the following month.

Bishop Edwards’ priestly ministry has largely centred on sec- ondary school and seminary education, including serving as rector of Iona College in Brisbane and as aspirants’ master and novice master at St Mary’s Seminary in Mulgrave.

In addition to his priestly formation and theological training, Bishop Edwards completed a science degree at Monash Uni- versity, where he also obtained a doctorate in philosophy.

In a letter to the faithful of Wagga Wagga, Bishop Edwards described his appointment “as a call from God to be with you and journey with you as disciple, brother and bishop”. Lent and our journey to Easter This crisis came at the heart of Lent. As we journey to Easter in 2020, let us practise personal prayer, fasting and self- sacrifice, with generosity to the poor. PROJECT COMPAS- SION continues to need our support. Seek reconciliation through examination of conscience and acts of contrition. Daily prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours is recommended, with reflective meditation on the Stations of the Cross and the Mysteries of the Rosary. When the Holy Week ceremo- nies are restricted, read the appropriate texts of these rites in your missal on each sacred day.

For the faithful departed

Be merciful, Lord Jesus, to all who have entered eternity because of this virus. Comfort and strengthen their families and friends and strengthen with the hope of your glorious Resurrection.

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. + May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen
