ISSN 2239-978X Journal of Educational and Social Research Vol. 4 No.3 ISSN 2240-0524 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy May 2014 Voskopoja, One of the Most Important Hearths of Balkan Illuminist Ideas Assoc.Prof. Nertila Haxhia Ljarja University of Shkodra “Luigj Gurakuqi”, Shkoder, Albania Doi:10.5901/jesr.2014.v4n3p229 Abstract The thriving city of Voskopoja was in the middle of the eighteenth century one of the most important centres of Illuminist ideas in the Balkans. As a commercial and cultural center, it was until the end of this century an important habitat for civilisation. The importance of the history of this place is connected with the history and culture of all peoples living in and around Voskopoja as the Vlachs, Albanians, Greeks, Bulgarians and Macedonians. The development of education and culture in this region came under the influence of the Western European Illuminist movement. This movement marked in Voskopoja an important step in the context of the rule of feudalism and compared with the mysticism and medieval Aristotelian scholasticism which had ruled until then in the Church of the East. In this town was formed the "New Academy", whose director was Teodor Anastas Kavalioti (1718-1789), one of the most prominent thinkers of the postbizantine era in the Balkans. Another important evidence of the development of this country was the printing house of Voskopoja (1731-1769), known especially for the legends of saints that were published there. The idea of Albanian european integration has its roots towards the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, a time when almost the whole of the Balkans were under the ottoman invasion.

The improvement of relations between Yugoslavia and Albania, affected Kosovo to start the collaboration for which Kosovo waited for approximately 20 years. The relations after 1968, should be seen from several perspectives between Yugoslavia and Albania. First of all some of the major factors which encouraged a decent beginning were the circumstances created in Czechoslovakia after the Soviet Union invasion. Albania’s reaction was immediate, which supported Yugoslavia during the invasion. The second factor are the Albanians from Kosovo, to whom Albania with Enver Hoxha’s influence had started to play the nationalistic card namely, national-communism. Thirdly, Tito’s attempts were clear after Plenum of Brione, he wanted to balance the politic between Yugoslavia and various clans but also different nations and nationalities. In the meantime, the roots of the relations between Kosovo and Albania date from 1966, the beginning of this relation were the market trades which opened the road for further cooperation in education and culture between Kosovo and Albania. In this research we have been focused on elaborating the scientific collaboration of these two countries, the effects, the results and the cultural activities that were held in this important year for the Albanians in general.

  • The Trajectory of the Albanian Historiography: Between the Austrian Albanologie (Volkskunde) and the Communist Al- Banologie (National-Stalinism/Etnographiya)
The Trajectory of the Albanian Historiography: Between the Austrian Albanologie (Volkskunde) and the Communist Al- banologie (National-Stalinism/Etnographiya) ANASTAS BEZHA UNIVERSITY OF SZEGED Abstract The focus of this paper is to analyze the trajectory of the Albanian historiography before and during communism. After the fall of the communist regime in 1991, the related studies on this subject were focused on the main narratives proposed by this historiography, with a critical eye by the German-speaking community of researchers. In this regard, little effort has been put to analyze the context – scientific and political – how these two closely re- sembling narratives were created. The paper tries to show a clear evolutionary path of the Albanian Historiography initiated by the actions of the Ballhausplatz in the last decade of the century XIX, as part of the literary propaganda towards the Albanians, up to the adop- tions and distortions of the same teachings by the communist historians half a century later. Such evolution passed through two major steps: the transition from the scientific tradition of Volkskunde als Volksgeschichte to its sibling version of Soviet Etnographiya; and further on to the implementation of the historiographic archetype work of the Hungarian historian Lajos Thallóczy in the new textbooks by the Albanian communist historians. Keywords: Albania, Albanologie, historiography, Volkskunde, National-Stalinism, South East Europe Roots of the Albanian Historiographical Problems In an interview held in May 2020, the Albanian philosopher Artan Fuga posed his thesis that Albanologie as an anthropological branch of Balkanologie didn’t exist.1 His thesis was based on the idea, that the Albanians as likely other nations, belonged to the same social sphere of public interests and their history was part of the same route that other nations had taken before.
