  • Organisms and Human Bodies As Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State
CHAPTER 1 Organisms and Human Bodies as Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State Robert A. Booth n this chapter, I show how discourses of contagion and pollution not only imbue many post-apocalyptic cinema and television narratives but also mirror public discourse about immigration. Further, I examine the often- I 1 racialized immigrant in post-apocalyptic film and television that is, in essence, a discourse on insider–outsider social divisions and relationships of power. Finally, I elucidate the argument that post-apocalyptic film and television rein- force the primacy of centralized political authority, namely the State, and post- 9/11 post-apocalyptic film in particular reinforces the hegemony of the State. The post-apocalyptic subgenre of science fiction and/or horror has become popular fodder for cinema and television. As Susan Sontag notes, “the science fiction film . is concerned with the aesthetics of destruction, with the pecu- liar beauties to be found in wreaking havoc, making a mess. And it is in the imagery of destruction that the core of a good science fiction film lies.”2 Portrayals of the post-apocalypse often index or echo visual memories of terrible societal traumatic events of the past.3 With the experience of the social, political, economic, and emotional trauma of the 9/11 attacks, one might reasonably assume that Americans would acquire a distaste for graphic destructive violence. Certainly, after the attacks, filmmakers occasionally felt pressured to remove images of the Twin Towers or to change content that might evoke the tragedy, such as planes crashing into skyscrapers. However, post-apocalyptic genres remain ever popular in American television and cinema.

  • ACRONYM 12 - Round 1
ACRONYM 12 - Round 1 1. A subreddit inspired by this physical action banned over 300,000 of its members in July 2018. A figure from Nidavellir [nid-uh-vell-EER] named Eitri created an object used to perform this action, after which his people were slaughtered. After performing this action, its perpetrator converses with a girl who asks (*) "What did it cost?". After being injured by the axe Stormbreaker, a native of Titan claims "you should've gone for the head" before performing this action. Trillions were turned to dust by, for 10 points, what action taken using a completed Infinity Gauntlet? ANSWER: Thanos snapping his fingers (accept The Snap; prompt by asking "what action did he take?" answers like "Thanos killing half the universe" or "Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet") <Nelson> 2. In a 2014 fake documentary, a man made of this product claims "life is sweet, at least for me." In lieu of a proper commercial, this product was advertised via a one-time-only, 30-minute musical staged on Super Bowl Sunday in 2019. In a 2018 ad, a man produces this product by milking a (*) giraffe. Another ad for this product set behind a set of bleachers depicts a girl contracting a "pox" in which this product manifests on her skin.

  • Take a Fantastic Voyage Into Virtual Reality by Paula Mchugh
THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 22, Number 3 Thursday, January 26, 2006 Take a Fantastic Voyage into Virtual Reality by Paula McHugh The Beacher took a fantastic voyage into the halls of ivy recently. We of the dinosaur generation— meaning we received our education via blackboards and Coronet films—were to encounter a learning environment at Valparaiso University that promotes new insights for engineering and sci- ence students. It’s called the Vis Lab, short for Scientific Visualization Laboratory, and it is open to the public twice a week for tours and demonstrations. You might at first think when entering the little room in Gellerson Hall that you’ve walked into a state-of-the-art theatre. The “star” of the Vis Lab is the Vis Box, which pro- jects high resolution 3-D images upon a screen. But instead of theatre seating, the student (or visitor) stands on a plat- form directly in front of the screen, and, With a pair of polarized goggles, a student or visitor can visually explore the structure of microbes. donning a pair of polarized goggles, enters the world of Virtual Reality. Vis Lab Director Jeff Will and research assistant Mike Steffen host the regularly-scheduled public open houses for anyone who is curious to see how the advancement of computer technology has changed the world of learning in the 21st century. For a writer depen- dent upon words on a page, the experience was over- whelming. For a molecular biologist or electrical engineer formerly restricted to formulas on a chalk- board, the world of Virtual Reality translates into images that can be observed from any number of different per- spectives.

Matt Reeves) USA 2007 Paramount Home Entertainment Diary of the Dead (Dir. George A. Romero) USA 2007 Optimum Home Entertainment [Rec] (Dir. Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much preemptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genrebased mass market entertainment.
