Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

BBC iPlayer saw an excellent start to the ‘Summer of Sport’ season, with 290 million requests across TV and radio. This was an increase of +6% on May, and higher than June 2015 by +39m requests. TV requests increased +9% month-on-month to 229 million, BBC iPlayer’s highest-ever performance for the month of June. • Live viewing grew to 11% of all TV requests, the highest level since mid-2014. And BBC iPlayer (TV and BBC iPlayer Radio) saw the highest ‘unique browser’ reach on record, with an average of 19.9 million unique browsers weekly across June. • The appeal of a ‘Home Nations’ football match, played during office hours. proved a winning combination for BBC iPlayer, with the England v Wales match for UEFA Euro 2016 being, by far, the most requested programme in June, delivering 2.8 million requests.     CHAPTER 1 Organisms and Human Bodies as Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State Robert A. Booth n this chapter, I show how discourses of contagion and pollution not only imbue many post-apocalyptic cinema and television narratives but also mirror public discourse about immigration. Further, I examine the often- I 1 racialized immigrant in post-apocalyptic film and television that is, in essence, a discourse on insider–outsider social divisions and relationships of power. Finally, I elucidate the argument that post-apocalyptic film and television rein- force the primacy of centralized political authority, namely the State, and post- 9/11 post-apocalyptic film in particular reinforces the hegemony of the State. The post-apocalyptic subgenre of science fiction and/or horror has become popular fodder for cinema and television. As Susan Sontag notes, “the science fiction film . is concerned with the aesthetics of destruction, with the pecu- liar beauties to be found in wreaking havoc, making a mess. And it is in the imagery of destruction that the core of a good science fiction film lies.”2 Portrayals of the post-apocalypse often index or echo visual memories of terrible societal traumatic events of the past.3 With the experience of the social, political, economic, and emotional trauma of the 9/11 attacks, one might reasonably assume that Americans would acquire a distaste for graphic destructive violence. Certainly, after the attacks, filmmakers occasionally felt pressured to remove images of the Twin Towers or to change content that might evoke the tragedy, such as planes crashing into skyscrapers. However, post-apocalyptic genres remain ever popular in American television and cinema.

His parents are Tom and Mary Ann Farley, his siblings are John, Kevin, Tom Jr, and Barb Farley. As of December 18, 1997 he died of drug overdose at age 33. He was born on February 15, 1964. Chris is famous for being a comedian and being on SNL (Saturday Night Live); he also starred in the films in the above paragraph. In the movie Tommy ​ Boy, Chris starred as Tommy the son of a CEO of a ​ brake pad company that was starting to go out of business because Tommy’s dad died. It's up to Tommy to save the company by selling the products to big store people. In the movie Beverly Hills Ninja, ​ a baby is rescued by a clan of Ninja warriors and raised by them as one of their own. But Haru, the now grown man (Chris Farley), as he is called, never quite fits into the clan, nor does he make a worthy ninja. However, the good­natured Haru, in his own way, and with some help from Gobei, manages to prove himself to be a winner in the end. Also in the movie Black ​ Sheep, Washington State Governor Al Donnelly (Tim Matheson) whose only road ​ block on the road to power is his embarrassing little brother Mike (Chris). To keep him out of mischief, Al makes one of his friends, Steve Dodds (David Spade) keep an eye on him during the election.
