  • Advertising, Public Relations and Social Marketing: Shaping Behaviour Towards Sustainable Consumption
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by AUT Scholarly Commons Advertising, public relations and social marketing: shaping behaviour towards sustainable consumption - Gjoko Muratovski Summary As the world struggles to sustain mass consumption as a lifestyle of choice, the need for sustainable behaviour becomes increasingly evident. Even though there are already a number of technical and legislative solutions underway, we still need to work on changing our consumption habits. This calls for social marketing strategies that can lead to promotion and acceptance of sustainable behaviour on a global scale. The problem, however, is that social marketing for sustainability that dominates the media today is ineffective and even counterproductive. In this study, I will examine what drives consumerism, and argue that sustainable consumption could be promoted as an alternative lifestyle, based on the same strategies that have successfully established mass consumption as a way of life. Countering the claims made for traditional social marketing, I will suggest that appealing to people’s innermost desires in the same way commercial marketing does, is in fact a more effective means of behaviour change than the negative information campaigns that are prevalent today. This calls for a different type of social marketing—one based on positive appeals related to subjective wellbeing and self-fulfilment, and not on scare tactics and dull educational campaigns. Introduction Today we live in a society that keeps us constantly on a lookout for new offers, bargains and sales (Lury, 2011). Our relentless pursuit of shopping almost resembles primal activities such as hunting and gathering for things that we have come to see as ‘essential’ for our survival.

  • Century of the Self Transcript
Century of the Self Transcript Written and Produced by Adam Curtis A hundred years ago a new theory about human nature was put forth by Sigmund Freud. He had discovered he said, primitive and sexual and aggressive forces hidden deep inside the minds of all human beings. Forces which if not controlled led individuals and societies to chaos and destruction. This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy. But the heart of the series is not just Sigmund Freud but other members of the Freud family. This episode is about Freud's American nephew Edward Bernays. Bernays is almost completely unknown today but his influence on the 20th century was nearly as great as his uncles. Because Bernays was the first person to take Freud's ideas about human beings and use them to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations for the first time how to they could make people want things they didn't need by linking mass produced goods to their unconscious desires. Out of this would come a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying people's inner selfish desires one made them happy and thus docile. It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate our world today. Part One: Happiness Machines Freud's ideas about how the human mind works have now become an accepted part of society. As have psychoanalysts. Every year the psychotherapists ball is held in a grand place in Vienna.

Larry Tye (1998, 2018) Edward L. Bernays i rođenje odnosa s javnošću Zagreb: Edward Bernays University College ISBN: 978-953-58317-5-4 Ivan Knezić 112 COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT REVIEW, 3 (2018) 2 BOOK REVIEW Edward L. Bernays is called the father of public relations. The campaigns and innovations that he introduced in the public relations industry have always captured the public’s attention, especially members of the profession. As Damir Jugo, the editor-in-chief of the Croatian edition, states, Bernays was “a person ahead of his time and the first person who, with his books, work and projects, promoted public relations as a recognizable profession and science“. The biography, written by Larry Tye, shows both Bernays’ professional career and his private life. After two decades, the book has been translated into Croatian, making a major contribution to the development of the public relations profession in Croatia, where literature in the area is largely lacking. The book is divided into eleven chapters. Each chapter follows Edward’s work, however, not chronologically, and provides numerous practical examples. The first chapter is devoted to Bernays’ beginnings in public relations. Namely, after he finished Agriculture College, which he was very dissatisfied with, he started his career as a journalist. Soon afterwards, he made his first steps in public relations at a national level with the theater show Damaged Goods. He introduced new PR techniques to make ballet and Caruso, the greatest tenor at that time, more popular and more accepted by the American public. Bernays also played an important role in the First World War, promoting US goals both in the country and abroad.

Scenario Belle Moskowitz: Pioneer and Innovator in Advocacy and Issues Management Anyone who has ever visited New York City—or viewed its skyline— recognizes the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan. The 102-story art-deco style building features the world-famous Observatory, which has been featured in movies (e.g., Sleepless in Seattle, Annie Hall, and King Kong) and on television since it opened April 11, 1931, 12 days ahead of schedule. In November 2019, the Observatory was reopened after a major renovation with great fanfare, including an on-location broadcast of the network program CBS This Morning. Without question, it is an iconic building with a rich history and serves as a lasting symbol of one of the world’s great cities. However, few people know the story of the landmark building’s construction during the Great Depression (1929–1939) or the many challenges that creating “the world’s tallest building” posed for city leaders and the project’s developers. During the construction phase, when several other tall buildings were also going up in New York, residents were reportedly concerned about construction accidents, worker safety, and the long-term impact on the city’s quality of life.

HISTORICAL CONTEXTS AND TODAY’S PRACTICES LEARNING OBJECTIVES distribute • Understand the history of public relations and its major figures. • Distinguish among the four traditional models of publicor relations. • Analyze the main theoretical perspectives of public relations. • Understand the current state of PR research, theory, and practice. CHAPTER 2 Introduction post, The historical foundation of public relations is not just a collection of dates and theories. Our field’s history is full of character, drama, and perspectives that span generations. In this chapter, these elements come together to form a neat package for you to enjoy and learn from. Understanding the roots of public relations allows us to predict where our field is going and copy, what we need to do to move it forward. As we look back in time, some ideas and incidents will raise a few eyebrows as we view them through the lens of today’s ethical codes of conduct. However, our history has much to teach us. While we cannot undo past missteps, we can apply the lessons learned and shape the future. notPublic relations is a relatively “new” field that came into being centuries ago. Since then, it has evolved significantly, especially in the last several decades, thanks to com- munication advances, inventions, and case studies that have shaped the field to what it is today. As we look at past stories, actions, and campaigns, the significant impact Do of public relations on society becomes clear. For starters, as a hub discipline, public relations connects with other disciplines for inspiration and collaboration. It is also, to an extent, based on family relations.

  • 3/3/16 Teenagers This Painting Is of Me When I Was 12. Even Back Then I
3/3/16 Teenagers This painting is of me when I was 12. Even back then I had a healthy mistrust in authority. What right did anyone have in bossing me around if I was not coercive, harming, or stealing from others? I knew it then, but didn’t know why. The very first thing we were taught in kindergarten was The Pledge of Allegiance, how could such a young person understand what the words mean? It was the beginning of our mind control or social engineering. Most Americans if they went to public school were educated under the Centralized Prussian Education model. I was held back in 1st grade because all I wanted to do was draw pictures and wasn't ready to learn how to read. If I wanted to draw pictures now as a 1st grade student I would be prescribed Ritalin or some other SSRI medication. From an early age, we are forced into a mandatory school system that requires and encourages youth to attend for a large portion of their human life, for six hours a day. (15,000 hours) Each child is required to learn the accepted version of reality in order to fit into the specific mold desired by the elite. Just like television, a large part of school is simply programming. It’s ironic how the same families behind the funding are responsible for the many inhumane atrocities that took place throughout history. They are also behind big oil, big "pharma", food and other industries that are becoming more transparent as of late.
