  • Stairway to Heaven? Geographies of the Space Elevator in Science Fiction
ISSN 2624-9081 • DOI 10.26034/roadsides-202000306 Stairway to Heaven? Geographies of the Space Elevator in Science Fiction Oliver Dunnett Outer space is often presented as a kind of universal global commons – a space for all humankind, against which the hopes and dreams of humanity have been projected. Yet, since the advent of spaceflight, it has become apparent that access to outer space has been limited, shaped and procured in certain ways. Geographical approaches to the study of outer space have started to interrogate the ways in which such inequalities have emerged and sustained themselves, across environmental, cultural and political registers. For example, recent studies have understood outer space as increasingly foreclosed by certain state and commercial actors (Beery 2012), have emphasised narratives of tropical difference in understanding geosynchronous equatorial satellite orbits (Dunnett 2019) and, more broadly, have conceptualised the Solar System as part of Earth’s environment (Degroot 2017). It is clear from this and related literature that various types of infrastructure have been a significant part of the uneven geographies of outer space, whether in terms of long-established spaceports (Redfield 2000), anticipatory infrastructures (Gorman 2009) or redundant space hardware orbiting Earth as debris (Klinger 2019). collection no. 003 • Infrastructure on/off Earth Roadsides Stairway to Heaven? 43 Having been the subject of speculation in both engineering and science-fictional discourses for many decades, the space elevator has more recently been promoted as a “revolutionary and efficient way to space for all humanity” (ISEC 2017). The concept involves a tether lowered from a position in geostationary orbit to a point on Earth’s equator, along which an elevator can ascend and arrive in orbit.

  • Reading William Morris, Peter Kropotkin, Ursula K. Le Guin, and PM in the Light of Digital Socialism
tripleC 18(1): 146-186, 2020 http://www.triple-c.at The Utopian Internet, Computing, Communication, and Concrete Utopias: Reading William Morris, Peter Kropotkin, Ursula K. Le Guin, and P.M. in the Light of Digital Socialism Christian Fuchs University of Westminster, London, [email protected], http://fuchs.uti.at Abstract: This paper asks: What can we learn from literary communist utopias for the creation and organisation of communicative and digital socialist society and a utopian Internet? To pro- vide an answer to this question, the article discusses aspects of technology and communica- tion in utopian-communist writings and reads these literary works in the light of questions con- cerning digital technologies and 21st-century communication. The selected authors have writ- ten some of the most influential literary communist utopias. The utopias presented by these authors are the focus of the reading presented in this paper: William Morris’s (1890/1993) News from Nowhere, Peter Kropotkin’s (1892/1995) The Conquest of Bread, Ursula K. Le Guin’s (1974/2002) The Dispossessed, and P.M.’s (1983/2011; 2009; 2012) bolo’bolo and Kartoffeln und Computer (Potatoes and Computers). These works are the focus of the reading presented in this paper and are read in respect to three themes: general communism, technol- ogy and production, communication and culture. The paper recommends features of concrete utopian-communist stories that can inspire contemporary political imagination and socialist consciousness. The themes explored include the role of post-scarcity, decentralised comput- erised planning, wealth and luxury for all, beauty, creativity, education, democracy, the public sphere, everyday life, transportation, dirt, robots, automation, and communist means of com- munication (such as the “ansible”) in digital communism.

  • Suggested Reading Orders of Books and Stories in Anne Mccaffrey's Pern Series
SUGGESTED READING ORDERS OF BOOKS AND STORIES IN ANNE MCCAFFREY’S PERN SERIES Fans often ask for advice as to the order in which to read the books in the popular Dragonriders of Pern© series. Anne McCaffrey herself politely suggests you should read them in the order in which they were published. For most of the series written by Anne the chronological order is also the publication order but the Pern Series is the notable exception. For those of you who prefer to read (or re-read) the Pern Series in chronological or story line order we are including a second, chronological list. However, this list cannot give a pure chronological order because that is an impossibility – some of the books and stories take place during the same time period. For example, a book like The Renegades of Pern spans a long pe- riod of Pern’s history in the run up to and during the Ninth Pass. As such, it runs parallel to several other books in the series. A graphic display of chronological order is added to illustrate this and as a handy overview. 1. Pern Books and Stories in order of Publication (stories in italics) • Dragonflight (1968) The short stories Weyr Search and Dragonrider are incorporated in this book. • Dragonquest (1971) • Dragonsong (1976) • Dragonsinger 1977) • The Smallest Dragonboy, in: Get Off The Unicorn (1977) and A Gift of Dragons (2002) • The White Dragon (1978) The earlier publication A Time When (1975) is incorporated in this book. • Dragondrums (1979) • Moreta: Dragonlady Of Pern (1983) • Nerilka’s Story (1984) • Dragonsdawn (1988) • The Impression, in: The Dragonlover’s Guide To Pern (1989) • The Renegades of Pern (1989) • All The Weyrs of Pern (1991) • Rescue Run (1991) • The Dolphin’s Bell (1993) • The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (1993) The earlier publications Rescue Run (1991) and The Dolphin’s Bell (1993) are incorporated in this book.

  • Emergence, AI and Intellectual Property
The Emergent1 Property2 Market3 Jon Crowcroft, University of Cambridge, Computer Laboratory Abstract The title of this piece is a somewhat heavy-handed word play. The property market I’m writing about is the market in Intellectual Property, which is broken in so many ways, evidenced by the existence of patent mountains and patent trolls, fighting over how many angles they can fit in the 360 degrees around the head of a pin, rather than actually innovating. (It is well known in creative tech circles that pausing to talk to the IP lawyers would never have led to the discovery of the Internet Protocol). The Emergent Property I’m referring to is the possibility that such a complex system could fairly suddenly exhibit some new behavior. In this article, I speculate that this new behavior could just be that the idea of property ceases to exist. The article is written somewhat derivatively after the 1960s SF style of writers such as Cyril Kornbluth, JG Ballard, and John Brunner. Any resemblance to their very creative output is entirely good luck rather than actual skill. 1 A good example of emergence is described in Stephenson’s Anathem book. Complex systems suddenly exhibit simple, powerful effects, fireflies flashing and synchronizing all together in phase, or a murmuration of starlings being common natural examples. Crystalisation. See also footnote 33. 2 Some people have proposed putting the UK’s Land Registry (the national record of property) on the blockchain. Blockchains, or distributed ledgers, are suitable for storing information you wish to remain immutable, in a decentralized way where you cannot find any single trustworthy third party.

Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Lois McMaster Bujold June 2018 It's been over 30 years since the epic, bestselling Vorkosigan Saga launched with “Shards of Honor,” and author Lois McMaster Bujold continues to mine new depths for the characters and settings in her rich science fiction universe. Set approximately 1,000 years in the future in a system of fictional planets (and occasionally on Earth), the series follows Miles Vorkosigan, a man as gifted in military tactics and interplanetary politics as he is at stumbling into trouble. Beyond the Vorkosigan Saga, Bujold has written books in the Chalion series and The Sharing Knife series. Known for her wit, warmth, and operatic, action-packed plots, Bujold has won the Hugo Award for Best Novel four times, the Hugo Award for Best Novella, and three Nebula Awards. Jo Zebedee: How integral are the short works to the Vorkosigan universe? LMB: As integral as any of the novels, in my opinion. (Well, maybe excepting “Weatherman”, which is an out-take from the novel The Vor Game, and thus double-dipping.) The reader may pick up three of the (currently) six in one package in the collection Borders of Infinity; the other two are still ala carte. Michael Rowe: Did you have an expectation on how we would view the Cetaganda Nobles and the Vor? (One more agreeable one less so?) LMB: The Vor are an ordinary sort of aristocracy, so that will depend on how one feels about aristocracies. The Cetagandans have a two-tier system, of which the upper level, the haut, turn out to be an ongoing genetics project aiming at creating post-humans.
