Local Trade Networks in Maluku in the 16Th, 17Th and 18Th Centuries

ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -

1 BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Dasar Pemikiran Bangsa Indonesia sejak dahulu sudah dikenal sebagai bangsa pelaut yang menguasai jalur-jalur perdagangan. Sebagai bangsa pelaut maka pengetahuan kita akan teknologi perkapalan Nusantara pun seharusnya kita ketahui. Catatan-catatan sejarah serta bukti-bukti tentang teknologi perkapalan Nusantara pada masa klasik memang sangatlah minim. Perkapalan Nusantara pada masa klasik, khususnya pada masa kerajaan Hindu-Buddha tidak meninggalkan bukti lukisan-lukisan bentuk kapalnya, berbeda dengan bangsa Eropa seperti Yunani dan Romawi yang bentuk kapal-kapal mereka banyak terdapat didalam lukisan yang menghiasi benda porselen. Penemuan bangkai-bangkai kapal yang berasal dari abad ini pun tidak bisa menggambarkan lebih lanjut bagaimana bentuk aslinya dikarenakan tidak ditemukan secara utuh, hanya sisa-sisanya saja. Sejak kedatangan bangsa Eropa ke Nusantara pada abad ke 16, bukti-bukti mengenai perkapalan yang dibuat dan digunakan di Nusantara mulai terbuka. Catatan-catatan para pelaut Eropa mengenai pertemuan mereka dengan kapal- kapal Nusantara, serta berbagai lukisan-lukisan kota-kota pelabuhan di Nusantara yang juga dibuat oleh orang-orang Eropa. Sejak abad ke-17, di Eropa berkembang seni lukis naturalistis, yang coba mereproduksi keadaan sesuatu obyek dengan senyata mungkin; gambar dan lukisan yang dihasilkannya membahas juga pemandangan-pemandangan kota, benteng, pelabuhan, bahkan pemandangan alam 2 di Asia, di mana di sana-sini terdapat pula gambar perahu-perahu Nusantara.1 Catatan-catatan Eropa ini pun memuat nama-nama dari kapal-kapal Nusantara ini, yang ternyata sebagian masih ada hingga sekarang. Dengan menggunakan cacatan-catatan serta lukisan-lukisan bangsa Eropa, dan membandingkan bentuk kapalnya dengan bukti-bukti kapal yang masih digunakan hingga sekarang, maka kita pun bisa memunculkan kembali bentuk- bentuk kapal Nusantara yang digunakan pada abad-abad 16 hingga 18. -

In this study, a traditional East Java Fishing Boat (EJFB) has been analysed in terms of its Received in revised form seakeeping performance. Furthermore, a bilge keel was designed to reduce the roll motions of the EJFB 17 July 2018 using multiple stages approach. After installing the designed bilge keels, it was shown that up to 11.78% Accepted 17 July 2018 and 4.87% reduction in the roll response of irregular seaways and the total resistance under the design Available online 9 August 2018 speed, respectively. It was concluded that the roll-stabilized-EJFB will enhance the well-being of the fisherman and contribute to the boats' safe operation, especially in extreme weather conditions. * omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Sea Gypsies and Pinisi of the Laut Java By Geoffrey Walker A modern Day motorized Dhow derivative, sometimes called a Pinisi. There can be nothing more serene than to sight the lazy sails of a Dhow or Pinisi flapping on the horizon, continually seeking the wind, as it slowly forges its way across the Java Sea from Surabaya or Semarang bound for Makassar or Bali. Although now mostly fitted with auxiliary engines these historical sailing craft still use the wind for the bulk of their sea passage. These craft ooze charm and are very practical craft as they encompass a wide spectrum of sailing vessels from coastal fishing boats to ocean going cargo carriers and passenger ferries. They bear a very close resemblance to Arab Dhows that trade around the Middle East, East Coast of Africa and across the Indian Ocean. A sight which I am sure fellow mariners of my vintage well recall. The Pinisi, has its origins in Indonesia. Being mainly built in Makassar located in the Sulawesi Group of Islands in the eastern provinces of Indonesia and is still used widely mostly for inter- island transportation, cargo or fishing purposes within the Indonesian archipelago. The fist Pinisi ships are said to have been derived from the Dutch “Pinas” introduced into Indonesia around the 1600s Originally these would likely have been fitted with lateen or other similar types of sail because the modern schooner rig was not widely used before the 19th century. As with other sailing ship types, many have been fitted with marine motors which has caused a slight change in the appearance of these ships, because up until the 1970s most of these craft were totally reliant on wind power. -

[email protected] Abstract Southeast Asia was known for its seafarers. Indeed, long before the Portuguese arrived in Asian waters, the seafarers had been sailing over the oceans for thousands of miles without a proper compass or written charts. Arena Wati or Muhammad Dahlan bin Abdul Biang is well-known author in Malaysia. He is one of the national laureates of Malay literature. Before he ventured into the world of creative writings, he was a seafarer since the age of 17. He originates from Makassar, an island of seafarers in Indonesia. His vast experiences as a seafarer, who learned and practiced the celestial navigational skills of the Makassar people, have become the important ingredient of his creative writings. Celestial navigation is a navigation of a naturalist that is based on natural elements such as wind direction, wave patterns, ocean currents, cloud formation and so on. Nevertheless, not much research has been doned on his navigational skills as reflected in his works, especially in the contact of local knowledge. As a result, this paper will venture into the celestial navigation and its relationship with the local knowledge. Selected works of Arena Wati, which consists of a memoir and two novels, will be analyzed using textual analysis. The result of this study reveals that the selected works of Arena Wati shows the importance of celestial navigation as part of the local knowledge.
