The islands of Rennell and Bellona are small Polynesian Outlier islands in the Solomon Islands. They have remained relatively isolated until the British moved in and declared the islands part of the British Protectorate in 1893. During the following years they were visited only by District Commissioners on brief tours, trying to solve internal conflicts and vainly also trying to impose a semi-European culture upon the islanders. Trading vessels and mission boats also visited at irregular intervals. In 1938 Christianity was introduced on Bellona and Rennell islands by among others the Rennellese Moa, who had been trained in the Christian faith in the SDA mission school in Batuna, Western Solomon Islands. From the earlier days only few and scattered notes on their culture were available, but enough to raise the curiosity of Euro-American scholars. After the islands were visited by the Whitney South Sea Expedition in 1928 and 1930, The Templeton Crocker Expedition to Western Polynesian and Melanesian Islands in 1933, The Galathea Deep Sea Expedition 1950-1952, and the Danish Noona Dan Expedition 1961-62 to the Philippines, the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Solomon Islands scientific data emerged rapidly. After the time of the great expeditions, individual scholars continued to study the islands flora and fauna, geography, religion, language, sign language, music, social v interactions and conflicts. Films and records have also emerged from their study. Some of the publications are easily found others are more difficult to locate. Therefore we have found it valuable to assemble this short bibliography. It contains all the publications about Rennell and Bellona that to our knowledge have been published so far. In case any reader of the present booklet has knowledge of publications or diaries etcetera concerning the islands of Rennell and Bellona not mentioned here, we would be very grateful for receiving a note, addressed to Dr. Rolf Kuschel, Institute of Psychology, University of Copenhagen, Njalsgade 88, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark.
