REVISITING COOBER PEDY AFTER 30 YEARS Via Desrey Jones Visitor Information Centre Coober Pedy

26 July 2012

A short endorsement of our visit to Coober Pedy,

We last visited Coober Pedy thirty years ago. It was amazing to see how the town has grown in the intervening years, pre- senting us with several new attractions to visit, as well as returning to some of the places we visited in 1982.

The majestic beauty of the Breakaways once again captured my imagination and provided wonderful photo opportunities.

It rained the last time we were here, just as it did today. Today I managed to photograph dusty whirl winds, leaden skies, rainbows, rain and puddles in the street, a photographers bonanza I could not have dreamed of.

It has been great to revisit and find the town has grown and maintained it's unique vitality.

Continued from page 13

Closing out the day were three outstanding local speakers:

- Tim Carter, who spoke of his investment in and love of Coober Pedy and the region;

- Milan Rapaic, who spoke of his experiences in establishing a local business servicing the mining sector and how he saw an opportunity to fill a niche and capitalised on it; and

- Bob Pryce, who made the audience think about how to keep 17-19 year olds engaged in society when they leave school as well as the potential of our youth and what past Coober Pedy Area School graduates have gone on to achieve.

The conference dinner, sponsored by IMX Resources and Oz Minerals, was an outstanding success with a number of locals attending that couldn't attend the conference during the day.

The Desert Cave presented an exceptional meal and the wine flowed freely. Old friendships were rekindled and new contacts established. The band, Keep the Change, kept the dance floor active until midnight and comedian, Paul Martell had the crowd in stiches with his brilliant impersonations and hilarious Irish wit. Carmelo Crisa Regional Development Australia, Far North presenting speakers at the Conference

The only disappointment for the event was the lack of local delegates.

This is the one event each year where industry, government and locals come together to discuss ideas and forge partnerships.

The regional community faces many challenges in the years ahead due to imminent economic contraction, declining population and lack of succession plans in many local and regional businesses. Second and third generation residents are leaving for greener pastures.

The pioneering spirit of yesteryear is much harder to find. People like Adam and Lynnie Plate of Oodnadatta, Trevor Wright of William Creek and the Coro's of Coober Pedy seem to be few and far between.

For Coober Pedy and the Far North to survive and prosper we need to form partnerships with industry and government. We need to develop ideas into innovative solutions. We need to find and attract more entrepreneurs like Tim Carter. This can only be achieved by individuals supporting and contributing to events such as this. Bush Church Aid Peter Palmer spoke of the Fly An idea begins with an individual but, more often than in Fly out ministry demands not, requires the collective vision of many for the idea to become a reality.
