This review brings together em- pirical literature on the social construction of race from different levels of analysis to highlight the variety of approaches to studying racial for- mation processes. For example, macro-level scholarship often focuses on the creation of racial categories, micro-level studies examine who comes to occupy these categories, and meso-level research captures the effects of institutional and social context. Each of these levels of anal- ysis has yielded important contributions to our understanding of the social construction of race, yet there is little conversation across bound- aries.     The Community-Building Project: Racial Justice Through Class Solidarity Within Communities of Color Joseph Erasto Jaramillot INTRODUCTION As people of color continue to face racial and socioeconomic subordination in this country, one wonders when, if ever, the "elusive quest for racial justice"' will end. Intellectuals dedicated to the pursuit of racial justice have focused their work on unmasking the operation of racism and white privilege and recognizing the perspectives of the oppressed. One central insight of this approach is the need to take race into account when analyzing the application of supposedly "race neutral" but so often racially discriminatory criteria. This strategy provides a theoretical basis for transforming society's view of racism and race relations. We will begin by engaging some foundational debates and themes that have framed the development of the field of Ethnic Studies since its incarnation in the late 1960s. Here, we will pay particular attention to how Ethnic Studies scholars have incorporated, extended, critiqued and challenged dominant modes of theoretical, methodological and disciplinary inquiry, thus generating new perspectives on the study of race and ethnicity. We will then turn to recent critical departures within the field, exploring how postmodern destabilizations of categorical binaries and boundaries have opened the field to new modes and forms of knowledge production. Is race a biological subdivision of human beings or is it merely an illusion? If it is a biological subdivision, what precisely is the defining criteria and what relevance does that criteria have for explaining culture or social life? If it is an illusion, what role does history play in its production and perpetuation? Any scholar, including film historians and critics, must in some way grapple with these questions when writing about race. If scholars assume that race is a natural taxonomy of Homo sapiens, a biological subdivision or subspecies, then their work is linked with a tradition of essentializing and discriminatory discourse that extends from eugenics and social Darwinism to studies of gene pool variances and the inheritance of intelligence quotients. While scientific approaches such as these purport to be objective, the identification and interpretation of biological or innate differences and their subsequent relevance to individual and social history is imminently – and ominously – subjective.2 Biological definitions of race all too often lead to a determinism that validates and promotes sociopolitical hierarchies. As Henry Louis Gates, Jr., remarks, “Race, in these (scientific) usages, pretends to be an objective term of classification, when in fact it is a dangerous trope.”3 This is not to suggest that there are no useful reasons for dividing humans into categories, but that the criteria for justifying those categories and their relevance for explaining social formation or cultural expression is more a product of knowledge and ideology than it is of “nature.” If scholars assume that race is merely an illusion or a fiction, then their work risks negating identity and social history.

Obasogie’s Blinded by Sight: Seeing Race through the Eyes of the Blind (2014) makes important contributions to both to the sociology of law and to critical race studies. The book challenges “colorblind” racial ideology by showing empirically that people who are blind from birth nevertheless “see” race, grasping it as a nearly omnipresent feature of social interaction and social organization. These insights, however, do not diminish the importance of the racial body. Beyond refuting colorblindness, Obasogie’s book points to a neverending tension, embedded in what we call racial formation, between the social construction of race and the corporeality of race. This tension has been present since the dawn of empire and African slavery. Obasogie’s achievement of falsifying colorblindness should not lead us to neglect the importance of the racial body. A number of books and articles have challenged the prevailing racial ideology of colorblindness by documenting the depth and persistence of structural racism in the United States, and correspondingly arguing that “race conscious” policies and practices are necessary to address systemic inequalities.

As the concept has become increasingly popular, questions about its meaning and value have been raised, and a backlash against its use has occurred. I argue that when “racialization” is properly understood, criticisms of the concept are unsuccessful. I defend a definition of racialization and identify its companion concept, “racialized group.” Racialization is often used as a synonym for “racial formation.” I argue that this is a mistake.     Racial Formation in the United States Racial Formation in the United States is appearing here in an entirely new edition, 20 years since its last publication. Authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant have maintained the structure and vision of their classic work, but have completely revised and rewritten every chapter. The ambitious purpose of the book remains the same: to develop a theory of race and racism adequate to their complexity, historical depth, and ongoing political impor- tance. Racial Formation explains how concepts of race are created and transformed, how race shapes U.S. society, and how it permeates both identities and institutions. Some of the contemporary themes that Omi and Winant discuss are: the steady journey of the U.S. toward a majority nonwhite population, the creativity and political legacy of post-World War II anti-racism, the linkage between colorblind racial ideology and neoliberalism, the new racial genomics, the emergence of “implicit bias” accounts of race, the rise of a mass immigrants rights movement, the achievement of race/class/gender intersectionality theories, and the election and reelection of a black president of the United States. In 1982-83, Susie Guillory Phipps unsuccessfully sued the Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records to change her racial classification from black to white. The descendant of an eighteenth-century white planter and a black slave, Phipps was designated "black" in her birth certificate in accordance with a 1970 state law which declared anyone with at least one-thirty-second "Negro blood" to be black. The legal battle raised intriguing questions about the concept of race, its meaning in contemporary society, and its use (and abuse) in public policy. Assistant Attorney General Ron Davis defended the law by pointing out that some type of racial classification was necessary to comply with federal record-keeping requirements and to facilitate programs for the prevention of genetic diseases. Phipps's attorney, Brian Begue, argued that the assignment of racial categories on birth certificates was unconstitutional and that the one-thirty-second designation was inaccurate. He called on a retired Tulane University professor who cited research indicating that most whites have one-twentieth "Negro" ancestry. In the end, Phipps lost. The court upheld a state law which quantified racial identity, and in so doing affirmed the legality of assigning individuals to specific racial groupings.1 The Phipps case illustrates the continuing dilemma of defining race and establishing its meaning in institutional life. Today, to assert that variations in human physiognomy are racially based is to enter a constant and intense debate. Scientific interpretations of race have not been alone in sparking heated controversy; religious perspectives have done so as well.2 Most centrally, of course, race has been a matter of political contention.
