To make a long story short, immunizations prevent us from getting sick in the first place. In order for our immune system to become immune to an illness, we have to have that illness once. With the invention of vaccines, we no longer need to get sick first in order to not get sick. Makes sense, right? One of the reasons why vaccines are so controversial is that they contain the same germs that cause disease. However, these germs have been either killed, or weakened to the point that they don’t make you sick. This dead or nearly dead germ introduced into the system via vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies, exactly as it would if you were exposed to the disease.
