  • Rethinking Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Janie Ruth Walker
I just want to be myself: Rethinking Pacific climate change adaptation Janie Ruth Walker A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Development Studies School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences Victoria University of Wellington 2019 Cover photo: A jandal, a coconut, modern, traditional: both valued. All photos were taken by the author, except where otherwise stated. ii Prologue I talk about the moonbow I saw at night, in the middle of our vast ocean. This is good luck, they say, and we are lost in phenomena and ways of knowing the ocean that connects us. Ratu had told me that after our conversation that the ‘Va’ space between us had diminished. As I consider what he means, I walk through the Suva streets to the bus depot. It’s so hot: I’m sticky and uncomfortable. The bus arrives and I clamber on, across the debris of paper bus tickets in the gutter; my too many bags getting in the way, thoughts shut out from the loud beats of the bus. A young girl stares. I smile, too keen. She waits. I turn and look out the window at the harbour clogged with wrecks and foreign ships. I look at the girl again and wait until the space between us opens. (Author’s personal journal, 2018). iii iv Abstract Climate change is now being presented as the biggest future threat to humanity. Many people living in the Pacific Islands are experiencing this threat through the extreme negative impacts of climate change without largely having produced the human-induced causes.

PACIFIC PASTORALISM: ANCIENT POETICS & THE DECONSTRUCTION OF AMERICAN PARADISE A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN AMERICAN STUDIES MAY 2014 By Travis D. Hancock Thesis Committee: Joseph Stanton (Chairperson) Brandy Nalani McDougall Robert Perkinson Keywords: Pastoral, Paradise, Pacific Islands, Hawai‘i, Herman Melville, Charles Warren Stoddard, Mark Twain, Theocritus, Longus ABSTRACT: This aim of this thesis is to deconstruct the etymology of the word “paradise” within the context of early Pacific narratives by popular American authors, and then within today’s tourist propaganda. Fundamental to that process is the imagination of “Pacific Pastoralism,” in which the pastoral tradition is considered as a predecessor to American traditions of describing the landscapes and peoples of the Pacific region, as those descriptions fueled an economy forcibly mapped onto that space. Herein texts are analyzed via close-reading comparisons, historical research, and more lyrical methods such as rhetorical stargazing, echolocation, and narrative technique. While this thesis is indebted to scholars in the fields of American Studies and English literature, it attempts to open space for Pacific Island Studies to epistemologically counter its cultural materialist claims. In total, this thesis is a critique of tourist marketing, which was ferried from antiquity to the Pacific on wooden ships, and today renders beaches little more than golf course sand-traps. • Israeli Culture in the Czech Republic 2015
ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Yoav Brill: Hora. Queer Film Festival Mezipatra. November 2015. ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Dear friends of Israeli culture, The year 2015 was exceptional in several ways. In April, it has been exactly 25 years since the first visit of Czechoslovak president to Israel: Václav Havel in April 1990 celebrated in this way the freshly renewed diplomatic ties between the two countries. Václav Havel’s legacy, very much valued in Israel, was remembered and relived through a large series of events, from discussions with notable guests to jazz and rock concerts and children workshops. We all had a lot of fun! Also, the Czech city of Pilsen was the European Capital of Culture in 2015. And Israeli culture was a significant part of the programme: in June, the days of Jerusalem expanded from Prague to Pilsen with a wide scale of events from fashion shows and art exhibitions to film screenings and dance performances. Throughout the rest of the year, the Pilsen audience could attend more Israeli events – puppet theatre performances, street music, and much more. The biggest joint exhibition of Czech and Israeli conceptual artists ever took place in the Prague Mekka of contemporary art, MeetFactory. And the established connections are about to develop in 2016, which makes us really happy. We cannot omit to mention dance: it has always been a big part of the Czech-Israeli cultural exchange, but in 2015, it has reached new heights: the living legend Ohad Naharin came to Prague twice within a month to first work with the dancers of National Theater on his choreography Decadance, very successfully staged until now, and then to be present at his Bathseva’s performance at Dance Prague festival gala evening, once again to a massive acclaim.
