Everyone has a best friend. Sure, I've got all my friends from class, but there’s no one like Molly; we’re besties. When she’s sad, I’m sad; when she’s happy, I’m happy. Many of us will get married and have that best friend again. There seems to be this need to have a real connection with someone, but why not with many people? We know what it’s like to have acquaintances and buddies, Facebook friends and neighbors you always wave to; but there is a difference between those relationships and the ones where you connect on another level, where you confide, trust, empathize and understand. There is more involved when you really care about another person—when you know and respect them as you do your family members (the family members you know and respect, that is). You accept their vulnerabilities and, in turn, put yourself out there. There is a safe place inside ourselves that can exist at the same time as casual interactions and water-cooler talk; you often have to give that up if you want to have the kind of relationship and connection with someone that offers more than social niceties and discussions about the weather. There seems to be this need Though the thought of giving up that safe space might deter us from making those meaningful and to have a real connection with deep connections, the rewards and companionship that come from stepping outside of the comfort someone, but why not with many zone are always well worth it. people?
