November/December/January 2017-18/5778 Vol. 110, No. 2 www.templedehirschsinai.org | 3 RABBI'S CORNER Stepping Out of our Comfort Zones by Rabbi Callie Schulman, Associate Rabbi Growing up, it’s ingrained in us that we have to have a best friend. Everyone has a best friend. Sure, I've got all my friends from class, but there’s no one like Molly; we’re besties. When she’s sad, I’m sad; when she’s happy, I’m happy. Many of us will get married and have that best friend again. There seems to be this need to have a real connection with someone, but why not with many people? We know what it’s like to have acquaintances and buddies, Facebook friends and neighbors you always wave to; but there is a difference between those relationships and the ones where you connect on another level, where you confide, trust, empathize and understand. There is more involved when you really care about another person—when you know and respect them as you do your family members (the family members you know and respect, that is). You accept their vulnerabilities and, in turn, put yourself out there. There is a safe place inside ourselves that can exist at the same time as casual interactions and water-cooler talk; you often have to give that up if you want to have the kind of relationship and connection with someone that offers more than social niceties and discussions about the weather. There seems to be this need Though the thought of giving up that safe space might deter us from making those meaningful and to have a real connection with deep connections, the rewards and companionship that come from stepping outside of the comfort someone, but why not with many zone are always well worth it. people?

“PEPS was a great way for me to connect with other young Jewish families. It was reassuring to meet other people going through the same struggles and dealing with the same questions that come with being a new parent. And it was fun to have a group to share the exciting milestones with as well. I'm glad that I have familiar faces at Temple now!” – Hannah Goldstein, PEPS participant

“As both a new mom and a new Seattleite, PEPS was invaluable. I met parents who I felt an immediate connection with, and who made sharing my thoughts and feelings easy. The facilitators were so kind and generous, and the regular visits by Temple's Rabbis made me feel like a part of the community. Of course, it was also pure joy to see my son playing on the floor with the other PEPS babies. Not to mention, wonderful to see the other babies develop week after week. I have often heard that the first few months of parenthood can be overwhelming, but my experience was far from it. I felt connected, engaged and inspired – all While singing Thank You God, Rabbi Aaron Meyer & our Executive Director Lisa Horowitz assist in holding the Tallit over the of which I owe to PEPS.” children at Tot Shabbat – Jaclyn Greenberg, PEPS Participant

10 | November/December/January 2017-18/5778 Vol. 110, No. 2 www.templedehirschsinai.org BRIDGE FAMILY RELIGION SCHOOL & YOUTH Voicing Your Opinion with Kindness and Confidence: New Program at BFRS Benefitting Sixth Graders by Sheri Gazitt, Teen Life Coach & Professional Speaker Sixth graders who are registered for the Sunday program will participate in a special class taught by Temple member and teen life coach Sheri Gazitt of Teen Wise. One session will be for parents. Have you ever found yourself in an uncomfortable situation? How did you respond? Did you stay silent? Did you speak up? When we find ourselves in these types of situations, we have to decide what to do. As adults, it can be difficult to figure out how to respond. Imagine how much more difficult it is for your child. In school, my daughters have found themselves in a wide variety of uncomfortable social situations. Kids drawing swastikas on the school bus window. Posters hung around the school with reference to Hitler. A “friend” claiming to be a neo-Nazi. A lunch table of students talking about how disgusting homosexuals are. A teacher objectifying and body-shaming a student in front of the whole class. In our class on Voicing Your Opinion with Kindness & Confidence, your student will examine three ways to respond when they disagree with someone: • Stay silent. • Aggressively shut them down. • Speak up respectfully and open up a dialogue. There’s a time and place for each of these responses, but my hope is to teach adolescents how to speak up respectfully and enlighten people around them when appropriate. Schools and communities are finding an increase in swastika graffiti and anti-Semitic comments. Outside of the Jewish population, many kids are not being taught the full story of the Holocaust and the significance of the swastika. Believe it or not, there are well-meaning groups who are trying to resurrect the swastika as a symbol of peace and love! If we voice our disagreement with people in a respectful way, we are much more likely to be able to open a dialogue and make a difference in this world. We are going to do our best to prepare your child to do this. With Heart, Coach Sheri

Temple Havurah of 25 Years by Holly Levin, Temple Member Our Havurah (photos below and right) started long ago as a group with young children, getting together for holidays, dinners, movie dates, and camping trips. We've been together through b'nai , graduations, weddings, grandchildren; job losses, career changes, retirements, aging parents and, sadly, their loss. And we're still camping! Our Havurah has brought us lifelong friends, support and comfort, and strengthens our connection to Temple because really, it's all about community.

Caring Community by Liz Spiezle, Caring Community Caring Community was established because Temple believes that no one should have to face a difficult situation or illness alone. Temple volunteers assist congregants in many meaningful ways, including rides to doctor appointments and Shabbat services. They provide members with warm meals post-surgery and companionship during recovery. Please let our TDHS staff know when our fellow congregants are in need of encouragement. For more information contact lead volunteer, Liz Spiezle, [email protected].
