The events of the last week of December serve to confirm the truth of the Biblical statement that Israel is "a nation which dwell alone, of no account among- the gentiles." Thir¬ teen Jews are wantonly killed by Arab infiltrators in Machene Yehuda, Jerusalem, marketing in preparation for the Sabbath, and the world is apathetic. The Security Council says not a word, the Pope keeps his peace and the United States urges restraint. An El-Al plane is attacked by marauders from Leb¬ anon, one Jew is killed and a Jewish Airline stewardess is gravely injured, and the world remains apathetic. The Security Council maintains its silence, the Pope maintains his peace and the United States continues its plea for restraint. The Israelis then launch a "mission impossible." They enter the Beirut airport, evacuate every man, woman and child, and proceed to destroy 13 airplanes — without a single human in¬ jury. Immediately the world shouts in condemnation. The Security Council issues a unanimous censure, the Pope com¬ miserates with Lebanon, and the United States decries Israeli "overreaction." After the Russian rape of Czechoslovakia, the British support of Nigeria in the face of a starving Biafra, the Indian seizure of Goa, and the American napalm bombing of Viet-Nam, the distinguished Council of Nations decides that the Israeli destruction of air-craft is immoral and unwarranted.     MARCH 9, 2017 – 11 ADAR, 5777 JEWISHVOL 41, NO 15 JOURNAL JEWISHJOURNAL.ORG Chabad takes 40 teens on New Orleans cleanup “Since Hurricane Katrina, the people seem to take nothing for granted, which is something that truly inspired me.” – Benjamin TODD FEINBURG Journal Publisher/Editor ust back from a late February, school vacation week aid trip to New Orleans, the two rabbis from Chabad of the North Shore are still glowing with joy. Leading Ja volunteer effort that brought a stunning 55 volunteers to the impoverished Ninth Ward – which is still struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina 12 years ago – represents the kind of extreme giving that energizes the synagogue and its leader, Rabbi Yossi Lipsker. The two men seem very different, which may be why they also seem to work so well with each other and their wives. Rabbi Yossi is well known in the area after 25 years at Chabad. The younger of the two, Rabbi Shmaya Friedman, is only 30 but has been at Chabad for seven years. The older man is the gas pedal while the younger one is the police- man making sure that the speed limit, if not exactly being honored, is at least acknowl- edged. “This is how it works. Yossi comes to me and he says, ‘Shmaya, this is what we’re doing,’” explained Rabbi Friedman. “And I say to myself, ‘Okay, how much Zantac (i.e. heart- burn relief) am I going to need for this idea?’” continued on page 21 WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR TO-DO LIST?
