Biographical Information Yoysef Gottfarsteyn (Joseph Gottfarstein) (1903-1980), historian, philologist and author, was born in Pren (Prienai), Suwalk region, Lithuania. He studied in religious primary school, the Slobodka yeshiva, and in a Hebrew high school. He graduated from the Jewish teachers’ seminary in Kaunas and studied music in the local conservatory. At the end of 1923, he moved to Berlin where he studied at the university there. From 1926 he lived in Paris, where he was active in Jewish communal and cultural life. He was the director of a Jewish theatrical studio as well as an active leader of the federation of Jewish communities in Paris; he was also a lecturer in the people’s university. During the German occupation of France, he escaped to Switzerland. He began writing poems in Vispe (Islet) in Kaunas (1922-1925). He also published here fragments of a dramatic poem entitled “Farzeenish” (Monster) in which he expressed motifs of the human conflict between good and evil. He was a contributor to Yidishe teatraler tsaytshrift (Yiddish theater periodical) in Kaunas, and to the Yiddish daily press in Lithuania. He served as the Parisian correspondent for Di prese (The press) in Buenos Aires, and for Folksblat (People’s newspaper) in Kaunas. Aside from correspondence pieces, he also published articles about theater and art. He contributed to Unzer vort (Our word) and Kiem (Survival) in Paris, and after the death of Yisroel Efroykin, he became editor of the latter. There he published a number of chapters of his work “Legitimatsye fun yidishkeyt” (Legitimating Jewishness). In Shevivim (Sparks) 4 (Paris, 1955), he published portions of his Hebrew translation of his French volume on the essence of Jewish civilization. He was a contributor to and served on the editorial board (with Theodor Plievier) of a German-language journal (Berlin, 1924). He wrote stories, feature pieces, articles, and essays for German and French periodicals. He was the author of a German volume (Geneva, 1944) that he later translated into French as L’ecolé du meurtre (School of death) (1946). This work was a kind of history of the German school up to the Hitler era. He translated into French a number of stories by Y. L. Peretz and chapters from Sefer hayetsira (The book of formation). His work on “Jewish folklore in Lithuania” appeared in the Jewish encyclopedia of Lithuania (published in Tel Aviv). He also wrote under the pen names: Y. G-n, Y. Kador, Y. Anshl, and Y. Malbin, among others. Sources: Y. What canI do? Can hatred be stopped? Will future generations remember the Holocaust? After the Holocaust, why can’t the world stop genocide? What canI do? Am I a bystander? A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires leaders and citizens to confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity and strengthen democracy. Federal support guarantees the Museum’s permanent place on the National Mall, but its educational programs and global outreach are made possible by the generosity of donors nationwide through annual and legacy giving. 2006–07 | ANNUAL REPORT UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM ushmm.org 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW Washington, DC 20024-2126 ushmm.org What must be done? What is the Museum’s role in the 21st century? What have we learned from history? From Our Leadership he crimes of the Holocaust were once described as “so calculated, so malignant, and Tso devastating that civilization cannot bear their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated.” How do we move from memory to action? When Justice Robert Jackson uttered these words at Nuremberg, could he have possibly imagined that six decades later his assertion would be a matter of doubt? These words marked what seemed to be a pivotal moment, a watershed in which all that followed would remain in the long shadow of the crime. There was a commitment to not ignore, to not repeat. Yet today, we must ask: Have we arrived at another pivotal moment in which the nature of the crime feels quite relevant, yet the commitment to prevent another human tragedy quite hollow? What must be done? What can we do as individuals? As institutions? | FROM OUR LEADERSHIP 1 For us the key question is: What is the role of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum? 2 | CONFRONTING ANTISEMITISM AND DENIAL 16 | PREVENTING GENOCIDE The Museum cannot eliminate evil and hatred.

  • Synagogue Bulletin
uare Synagogue Bulletin 150 West End Ave. New York, N.Y. 10023 Vol. IV, No. 4 Shevat-Adar, 5729 January-February, 1969 FROM THE RABBI'S DESK.... The events of the last week of December serve to confirm the truth of the Biblical statement that Israel is "a nation which dwell alone, of no account among- the gentiles." Thir¬ teen Jews are wantonly killed by Arab infiltrators in Machene Yehuda, Jerusalem, marketing in preparation for the Sabbath, and the world is apathetic. The Security Council says not a word, the Pope keeps his peace and the United States urges restraint. An El-Al plane is attacked by marauders from Leb¬ anon, one Jew is killed and a Jewish Airline stewardess is gravely injured, and the world remains apathetic. The Security Council maintains its silence, the Pope maintains his peace and the United States continues its plea for restraint. The Israelis then launch a "mission impossible." They enter the Beirut airport, evacuate every man, woman and child, and proceed to destroy 13 airplanes — without a single human in¬ jury. Immediately the world shouts in condemnation. The Security Council issues a unanimous censure, the Pope com¬ miserates with Lebanon, and the United States decries Israeli "overreaction." After the Russian rape of Czechoslovakia, the British support of Nigeria in the face of a starving Biafra, the Indian seizure of Goa, and the American napalm bombing of Viet-Nam, the distinguished Council of Nations decides that the Israeli destruction of air-craft is immoral and unwarranted. One Jew is expendable, but thirteen air-planes are not.

  • Chabad Takes 40 Teens on New Orleans Cleanup
MARCH 9, 2017 – 11 ADAR, 5777 JEWISHVOL 41, NO 15 JOURNAL JEWISHJOURNAL.ORG Chabad takes 40 teens on New Orleans cleanup “Since Hurricane Katrina, the people seem to take nothing for granted, which is something that truly inspired me.” – Benjamin TODD FEINBURG Journal Publisher/Editor ust back from a late February, school vacation week aid trip to New Orleans, the two rabbis from Chabad of the North Shore are still glowing with joy. Leading Ja volunteer effort that brought a stunning 55 volunteers to the impoverished Ninth Ward – which is still struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina 12 years ago – represents the kind of extreme giving that energizes the synagogue and its leader, Rabbi Yossi Lipsker. The two men seem very different, which may be why they also seem to work so well with each other and their wives. Rabbi Yossi is well known in the area after 25 years at Chabad. The younger of the two, Rabbi Shmaya Friedman, is only 30 but has been at Chabad for seven years. The older man is the gas pedal while the younger one is the police- man making sure that the speed limit, if not exactly being honored, is at least acknowl- edged. “This is how it works. Yossi comes to me and he says, ‘Shmaya, this is what we’re doing,’” explained Rabbi Friedman. “And I say to myself, ‘Okay, how much Zantac (i.e. heart- burn relief) am I going to need for this idea?’” continued on page 21 WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR TO-DO LIST?
