What can I do with a Major in . . .? What Can I Do With a Major in Anthropology?
Exploration within anthropology can consist of, human behaviour, culture and society, and human biology and evolution. It focuses on how people have evolved over millions of years, why people move around the world, how people exist in distinct cultures. Anthropology consists of four broad disciplines: Physical Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology and Archaeology.
Although most anthropologists work in teaching or researching positions, there are many who are now expanding their work experience in areas such as contract archaeology, anthropology laboratories and museums. Social science research positions also make up a number of opportunities for people with a degree in anthropology. While most academic positions do require a doctorate degree, there are non-academic positions for cultural anthropologists. Research institutions, non-profit organizations, government agencies, private organizations and world organizations all provide opportunities for people who choose a non-academic environment. Most positions available to anthropologists do not have the word “anthropologist” in the title; rather, they may use broader less defined words in their description. Many employers are interested in the skills which Anthropologists posses: knowledge about human behaviour, theoretical approaches and practical methods, skills in social research, interviewing, field work, human evolution and the ability to critically analyse cross cultural situations.
