The goal is to develop structuralized and systematic methods for understanding traditional artifacts, which may become inspirations for contemporary product designs. ICA, Interpreting Cultural Artifacts, interprets artifacts at three levels: surface level of evident features, immediate reasoning, and the deep cultural influential factors. SETIG (social, economic, technological, ideological and geographical) factors analyze the broader cultural contexts of cultural artifacts. Impact Analysis explores how different factors relate to each other, and affect the design and development of artifacts. Finally, Visual Language and Shape Grammar are existing methods borrowed for visual and formal language studies of artifacts. It is not comprehensive or representative; instead of overview introduction to the range of traditions emphasis is on a selection of recent practices. Important traditions, notably Taoism and Vajrayana, are hardly touched; those dealt with are not treated in survey fashion. As this is organised around themes, even in chapters dealing with specific practices only selected aspect of it are emphasised. Part One establishes a framework for exploration through orientation to the anthropology of religion, the nature of mysticism, and issues which arise while exploring it as social practice. Part Two deals with a series of practices, focussing on representatives of major traditions. Part Three deals with themes which cross traditions and builds on the examples dealt with to explore wider issues. By dealing with concrete practices I believe these excursions come closer to the ground level social reality of consciousness raising practices, usually termed "meditation", than overviews of Asian religions would.

HANAMI The Domestic/Public Dichotomy Nearly twenty years ago, in a work that has become a landmark in women's studies by female anthropologists. Michelle Rosaldo proposed a dichotomy between a "domestic" orientation in women and a "public" orientation in men as a theoretical framework to anal- yze the universal position of women. In the theoretical overview of the book Woman. Culture, and Society (Rosaldo & Lamphere 1 974), Rosaldo accounted for the difference between the sexes in terms of this dichotomy by stating that there is a world-wide asymmetry of gender-identified activities: women's activities tended to be undervalued compared to those of their sexual counterpart and men were recognized as having culturally legitimated authority over women. By her definition, "domestic" meant "those minimal institutions and modes of activity that are organized immediately around one or more mothers and their children," and the "public" referred to "activities, institutions, and forms of association that link, rank, organize, or subsume particular mother-chi]d groups" (Rosaldo 1974: 23). She hypothesized that women are primarily involved in "domestic" relations and activities, while men are free to form broader associations in the public domain. Women are bound to the "enduring, time- consuming and emotionally-compelling" commitment as exemplified in a mother's relation with her infant child, whereas men can keep their distance from the "messiness" of domestic life, and engage themselves in the hierarchical, political world.

Because of government and health authority interest in determining issues that might influence the health and well-being of white northern women, and hence their families and a future white labour force, in 1924 the Institute of Tropical Medicine conducted a comprehensive Sociological Survey of White Women in selected northern towns. Designed to address and resolve concerns of government and medical authorities with anxieties about sanitation, hygiene and eugenic wellbeing, the Survey used domestic science criteria to measure the health knowledge of its subjects: in so doing, it gathered detailed information about their lives. Guided by the Survey assessment categories, together with local and overseas literature on racial ideas, the thesis examines salient social and scientific concerns about white women in Queensland‟s tropical north and in white-dominated societies elsewhere and considers them against the oral reminiscences of women who recalled their lives in the North for the North Queensland Oral History Project.

    An Anthropology of Emotion Charles Lindholm In the modern world where computers are capable of calculating faster and more accurately than any person, we like to believe our emotions, not our analytic abilit- ies, make us human. In other words, instead of ―thinking animals‖ we see ourselves as ―feeling machines.‖ Accordingly, we say that people who are cerebral and unemo- tional are ―inhuman‖ and ―heartless.‖ We want our friends and lovers to be compas- sionate and ardent, not rational and calculating. For the same reason, our leaders never portray themselves as logically minded technocrats, but as empathetic indi- viduals who ―feel our pain.‖ For entertainment, we appreciate the books and movies that stimulate us to experience the maximum amounts of fear, grief, indignation, or joy. In our personal lives, we make our choices on the basis of whether something ―feels right.‖ In light of our pervasive concern with feelings, the philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre has persuasively argued that the dominant modern creed ought to be called emotivism (MacIntyre 1981). ANTHROPOLOGISTS AVOIDED THE STUDY OF EMOTION Yet even though emotions take center stage in our daily lives, until quite recently anthropology has had very little to say about how emotions are interpreted, how they differ cross-culturally, or whether emotions have any universal character (for reviews of the literature, see Lutz and White 1986; Jenkins 1994; Rorty 1980). The disciplinary neglect of such a crucial aspect of the human condition is espe- cially remarkable since anthropologists have long relied on emotional relationships of rapport, empathy, and compassion to gain the trust of informants.

Introduction Technology is often seen as a neutral, value-free artifact used as a means of enhancing learning with adults. However, technology has been showed to be the artifact of a culture and contains the values of the culture. In today’s society, technology represents the values of the dominant cultures and supports the goals and ambitions of the hegemony while suppressing marginalized groups and individuals.

But are they? The human body is at once a given of social and cultural life and a continuously created and contested entity. In this advanced undergraduate seminar we shake up our received understandings and examine ‘the body’ as a historically and culturally contingent category, the material site and means of practice, and a foundation point for identity and self-fashioning. We consider the relevance of cultural meanings to biomedical practices and imaginings of kinship, the centrality of the body to consumer techno-society, and the body’s role as a locus of experience, political inscription, and struggle. Readings examine and challenge the ostensible distinctions between ‘body’ and ‘mind’, and apparent limits of the body as a bounded, singular entity. Students will be exposed to several anthropological approaches to the human body as a social and cultural construct, and to topics of contemporary interest such as body modification and organ transplantation as well as classical ethnographic themes. Format Lectures, films, student presentations and group discussions grounded in weekly readings about bodies in specific social, cultural and historical contexts. Objectives In addition to having improved their written and oral expression and critical thinking skills, at the end of this course students can expect to: • Be knowledgeable about anthropological approaches to the body and embodiment and be able to evaluate their uses and pitfalls, • Have developed a knowing and respectful appreciation of people’s practices and ways of inhabiting their bodies, • Be able to critically assess practices, modes of control, and concepts of the body in light of current political, economic, social and technological conditions.
