Woodbury University of Texas at Austin We give a narrative description of our ten-year path into the elaborate tonal systems of the Chatino languages (Otomanguean; Oaxaca, Mexico), and of some of the methods we have used and recommend, illustrated with specific examples. The work, ongoing at the time of writing, began when one of us (Cruz), a native speaker of San Juan Quiahije Chatino, entered the University of Texas at Austin as a Ph.D. student and formed, together with the other of us (Woodbury), a professor there, the Chatino Language Documentation Project, ultimately incorporating five other Ph.D. students and two other senior researchers. We argue for the importance of an interplay among speaker and non-speaker perspectives over the long course of work; a mix of introspection, hypothesis-testing, natural speech record- ing, transcription, translation, grammatical analysis, and dictionary-making as research methods and activities; an emphasis on community training as an active research context; the simultaneous study of many varieties within a close-knit language family to leverage progress; and the use of historical-comparative methods to get to know tonal systems and the roles they play at a deeper level. 0. In Xinjiang the international lingua franca English, the national official language Mandarin Chinese, and major Turkic languages such as Uyghur and Kazakh interact and compete for linguistic prestige in different social scenarios. The power relations between the Turkic languages, including the Uyghur language, and Mandarin Chinese is one in which minority languages are surrounded by a dominant state language supported through various institutions such as school and mass media. The much greater symbolic capital that the “legitimate language” Mandarin Chinese carries enables its native speakers to have easier access than the native Turkic speakers to jobs in the labor market. Therefore, many Uyghur parents face the dilemma of choosing between maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity and making their children more socioeconomically mobile. The entry of the global language English and the recent capitalist development in China has led to English education becoming market-oriented and commodified, which has further complicated the linguistic picture in Xinjiang. -

D.2 AIR RESOURCES D.2.1 Regional and Background Information Regional Climate The Project site is located in southeastern California, in the Colorado Desert. The climate in the Blythe area is categorized as a desert climate, with dry, hot summers and mild winters. The region is characterized by extreme fluctuations of daily temperatures, strong seasonal winds, and clear skies. January is the coldest month, with a mean low temperature of 41.7 degrees Fahrenheit (°F). July is the hottest month, with a mean high temperature of 108.4°F. Temperature and precipitation data were measured at Blythe from July 1948 through June 2016 (Western Regional Climate Center [WRCC] 2018a). The mean temperature for the Blythe station is 73.7°F, and the mean annual precipitation is 3.55 inches. More than half of the precipitation occurs between November and March. Although rainfall occurs primarily in the winter months, the region is periodically influenced by subtropical weather conditions, especially sudden monsoonal late summer storms. -

Dwyer, Chairperson Date approved: February 3, 2013 ii ABSTRACT Ashley Thompson Department of Anthropology University of Kansas 2013 This thesis is a qualitative study investigating how ‘purified’ language in Uyghur- language broadcast media is interpreted by Uyghurs living in urban Ürümchi, the regional capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. ‘Purity’ refers to the intentional avoidance of Mandarin Chinese loanwords, otherwise heard often in everyday conversations, but expunged in television news. The participants in my research, urban Uyghurs who received mother-tongue education, viewed ‘pure’ language used in broadcast media as a pedagogical tool, holding it to prescriptive standards not deemed necessary for everyday language practice. Recent education reforms have greatly decreased exposure and use of Uyghur in the classroom, and increased the importance in the work environment to be proficient in Mandarin Chinese. -
