Fords Gin - Distilled in London at Thames Distillers, Fords Gin is a mix of 9 botanicals. It starts with a traditional base of juniper & coriander seed and is balanced by citrus (bitter orange, lemon & grapefruit peel, florals (jasmine flower & orris) and spices (angelica & cassia).

London Dry & Traditional Style Gins London Dry style gins are made in the classic style, with the unmistakeable flavour of juniper the hero, and a healthy kick of crisp citrus. Unsurprisingly, these are generally the driest style of gin, and well- balanced – perfect for both gin and tonics and martinis. Old Tom Gins A style popular in 19th century Britain and was traditionally a sweeter and fuller-bodied version of London Dry. Although it fell out of fashion, it is now very much back ‘in’, and is the gin of choice for a classic Tom Collins.

Extra & Navy Strength Gins These gins have a similar flavour profile to London Dry styles (juniper driven) but pack an extra punch. The original term ‘Navy Strength’ refers back to the British Navy in the eighteenth century where gin was an integral part of every sailor’s daily rations. After some issues with wily spirit merchants short-changing them with watered down versions they discovered that if it was poured onto gunpowder and the gunpowder smoked or failed to light, it must have been diluted. Only if the gunpowder still lit was the gin ‘legitimate’ and in those days that meant 114 proof (or 57 ABV). Not all of the gins on this list are full navy strength, but all are well above the standard ABV for gin ... you’ve been warned!

New Wave/Contemporary Gins These new style gins are a modern interpretation of the classic style of gin. Expect less emphasis on juniper, and a host of other botanicals taking centre stage, often plants or spices local to where the gin is produced, with some even aged in oak casks like a good whisky or rum. Genever Although we all think of gin as the quintessential British tipple, its origins actually go back to Netherlands, where it was known as Genever. According to legend, during the 30 Years War, British soldiers noticed the calming effect it had on the Dutch soldiers (leading to the phrase ‘Dutch Courage’). Genever style gin is made using a malt-based spirit, and as a result is more reminiscent of whisky than gin. Best enjoyed neat as a sipping spirit.

Sloe & Flavoured Gins Sloe gins are not gins in the traditional sense, but are a sweet liqueur with a gin base, developed by the British with autumnal fruits as a winter warmer. They are lower in alcohol and tend to have a sweeter flavour that celebrates the classically British fruit flavours. These liqueur styles are lower in alcohol than traditional gins.
