Taylor and Adams 2 Virginia Department of Education, Office of Program Administration and Accountability Crossroads: Redefining the Educational Experience From Vision to Practice Ninth Annual Institute DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Williamsburg Williamsburg, Virginia 2013 Theme and Focus Areas The theme for the 2013 Vision to Practice Institute is “Crossroads: Redefining the Educational Experience.” The theme builds upon the previous year’s focus on emerging trends in education. Reform principles established as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s flexibility from certain requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) have become the driving force in educational policy. The national attention on college- and career-ready standards and assessments, differentiated accountability and support for schools, and principal and teacher evaluations and effectiveness have become the foundation of state educational systems designed to prepare students for success in postsecondary education and careers. Virginia’s efforts in these areas are highlighted by the national spotlight on these reform principles. Virginia’s educational reform initiatives are focused on innovation and investments that ultimately support the creation of affordable pathways to college degree attainment and prepare our citizens for employment in the high-income, high-demand fields of a changing economy. The 2013 From Vision to Practice Institute will address changes in the educational experience brought about by Virginia’s educational reforms and ESEA flexibility offered by the U.S. Department of Education. The institute will focus on the following key reform areas: College- and Career-Readiness: Preparing students for success in postsecondary education and a competitive work force & Career- College-eadiness R Accountability and Support: Recognizing schools for successfully closing achievement gaps and helping students excel, and supporting lower-performing Accountability & Support schools Effective Instruction Effective Instruction: Encouraging innovative and effective instruction through professional development, evaluation, and support for teachers and principals From Vision to Practice Institute • July 9-11, 2013 • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia 3 Featured Speakers Tuesday, July 9, 2013 Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He has been a teacher, an alternative high school director, computer coordinator, technology consultant, and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments, and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology. Among his accomplishments, November was named one of the nation’s 15 most influential thinkers of the decade by Classroom Computer Learning Magazine; recognized as one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse; and honored as one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe educators. November co-founded the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology. Each summer, he leads the Building Learning Communities summer conference with presenters and participants from all over the world. His writing includes the best-selling book, Empowering Students with Technology. Wednesday, July 10, 2013 Dr . David Way graduated from the United States Naval Academy, received a master’s degree from Georgia Tech, and a doctorate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, all in aerospace engineering. He served for five years as an officer in the Navy’s nuclear submarine force. Presently a civil servant assigned to the Atmospheric Flight and Entry Systems Branch of NASA’s Langley Research Center, Dr. Way serves as the Center’s programmatic contact as well as simulation and flight dynamics lead for the Mars Science Laboratory mission that successfully landed the Curiosity rover on Mars, August 5, 2012. He is a volunteer at the Virginia Air and Space Center. “Dr. D,” as he is known to students, has a love of teaching science to children and engaging them with a meaningful introduction to physics so they stay engaged and interested. Murray Banks has been an educator at every level from grade school to graduate school. He was honored for his teaching and coaching, culminating with Vermont’s Teacher of the Year and the national Outstanding Educator awards. He is also an exceptional athlete, having competed in world championships in the triathlon and cross-country skiing. Banks connects performance as an athlete and leader to balancing pressure with a healthy lifestyle and positive mental focus. His engaging style merges skills, inspiration, and humor to address the challenges that educators encounter. 4 Virginia Department of Education, Office of Program Administration and Accountability Drs . Harry Wong and Rosemary Wong are two of the foremost authorities on the effective teacher. Named one of the 20 most admired people in education by Instructor Magazine, Harry Wong is a former award-winning high school science teacher and recipient of the Horace Mann Outstanding Educator and the National Teachers Hall-of-Fame Lifetime Achievement awards. Rosemary Wong is a former elementary school teacher and the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus recognition from Southeastern Louisiana University and Louisiana State University and the Silicon Valley Woman of Achievement Award.Together the Wongs have written the education best-selling book, The First Days of School. Their publications provide advice on the improvement of instruction, classroom management, and teacher expectations of students. The Wongs also have built and sustained a school in Cambodia. Thursday, July 11, 2013 Dr . Bill Daggett is the founder and chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education. He has been a teacher and administrator at the secondary and postsecondary levels and a director with the New York state education department, where he spearheaded restructuring initiatives. Today, he is recognized for his ability to move PreK-12 education systems towards more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students in the 21st century. He has assisted states and school divisions nationwide with their school improvement initiatives. He is the creator of the Application Model and Rigor/Relevance FrameworkTM, a practical planning and instructional tool for determining the relevance of curriculum and assessment to real-world situations. Dr. Daggett is the author of numerous publications and has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus by both Temple University and the State University of New York at Albany. Dr . Steve Perry is the CNN education contributor and has also been a regular contributor on issues of education for MSNBC and Fox. He believes that the success of a life is determined by where you end, not where you start. It is this philosophy that inspired him to transform the lives of poor and minority children by providing them with access to a college education. Dr. Perry has been instrumental in establishing programs that send low-income, first generation graduates to college, including the Capital Preparatory Magnet School that was recognized by the Hartford Courant and U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s best high schools. He is the author of Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us and has recently published Raggedy Schools.     Katharine Gibbs & Her School Beyond White Gloves An NEHGS member asked me, “Wasn’t Katie Gibbs a finishing school?” when I was researching the history of the world’s most famous secretarial school. My experience and research taught me otherwise. Finishing schools prepared women for a life of leisure, while Gibbs prepared graduates for lives of financial and emotional independence. My challenges were learning where Katharine Ryan Gibbs (1863–1934) fit in the history of business education, separating the myths from the truth and presenting a history of the institution’s hundred years, 1911 to 2011.     Career Education Corporation ______________________________ Introduction Career Education Corporation (“CEC”) is one of the largest for-profit education companies offering many types of programs from certificate to Bachelor’s degrees. Like many for-profit education companies, in recent years CEC has experienced significant growth in student enrollment, Federal funds collected, and profit realized. At the same time, the company has been under near constant scrutiny from accreditors and law enforcement entities. Most recently, after inquiries from the New York attorney general, the company admitted that placement data for multiple campuses had been falsified. The student withdrawal rate for the Associate program is among the highest analyzed by the committee staff and the company also has unusually high rates of students defaulting on student loans. It is unclear that CEC delivers an educational product worth the rapidly growing Federal investment taxpayers and students are making in the company. Company Overview CEC is a publicly traded, for-profit education company headquartered in Schaumburg, IL. Founded in 1994 by John M. Larson, CEC grew quickly by acquiring established schools and making them profitable. The company’s initial focus was on institutions offering business studies, visual design and information technology programs. The first purchases made by CEC were the Al Collins Graphic Design School in Tempe, AZ, and Brooks College in California.1322 In 2003, CEC merged with competitor Whitman Education Group, Inc., gaining control over Sanford-Brown Colleges, Ultrasound Diagnostic Schools (now known as the Sanford-Brown Institute) and Colorado Technical Universities. Today, CEC is the fourth largest for-profit higher education company in the country and has 83 campuses located across the United States.1323 CEC schools offer Certificates as well as Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in areas including visual communication and design, culinary arts, information technology, business studies and health education.

    OIR Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment RESEARCH BRIEF No. 107-13 October 2013 Summary of Graduate Survey: Class of 2011 – Educational Status This Research Brief presents information about the respondents to the 2010-2011 graduate survey. Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) conducts an annual survey of its graduates. For this implementation, graduates were mailed the survey for completion and submission. The survey contains questions concerning graduates' demographic information, educational goals, educational status, employment, and salaries. Graduates are also asked about their opinions regarding instruction they received at NOVA, their instructors, college services and facilities, and the impact NOVA had on their career opportunities and continuing education. Surveys were emailed to 5,795 graduates. 577 graduates responded, resulting in a response rate of 10%. This Research Brief focuses on items related to graduates’ educational status at the time of the survey. Graduates were asked to indicate their educational status at the time they completed the graduate survey. Table 1 provides data on their educational status, with responses provided by degree type. Occupational-technical degrees include A.A.A., A.A.S., and Certificate awards; transfer degrees are comprised of A.A. and A.S. awards. Approximately half of the Occupational-Technical degree graduates (49%) and 85% of Transfer graduates were enrolled in school again after graduating from NOVA. Table 1.
