President’s Report

Cricket seasons are most often remembered for the premierships won and lost as well as outstanding individual performances. Season 2019/20 will be remembered for so much more.

Following years of planning, the beginning of the season saw the demolition of the old pavilion to make way for the new and the coronavirus brought the season to an abrupt end. Despite the significant challenges we were presented with, we were able to achieve on-field premiership success in our 4th and 5th XI teams, as well as the successful near completion of our multi-million-dollar pavilion.

The community spirit was apparent early on when the Heathmont Bowls Club was kindly made available to us for Thursday evening meals and selection, the Heathmont Scout Hall on weekends and the new Maroondah Nets facility for meetings and change rooms if so required.

Despite the foreseeable challenges, it certainly wasn’t a season we just wanted to ‘get through’. Expectations of the commitment of our members higher than any other year, and you all didn’t disappoint. No clubrooms and equipment stored in shipping containers meant training and match day requirements were logistically challenging, however such times can bring out the best in people and most members tackled the extra duties with the right attitude. The weather was also unkind, one of the wettest summer seasons I can remember! All of this of course a small price to pay for one season, as a new pavilion awaited us.

We are always looking for opportunities to improve the club and this season we were able to secure, on a long-term arrangement with the Ringwood CC and Council, the use of the facilities at Proclamation Park for our junior and senior cricketers. This enabled us, for the first time in 20 years, to enter a 4th side on turf, a significant win for the club. I would like to acknowledge Ringwood CC for accepting our proposal. We are certainly looking forward to being part of the new Proclamation Park pavilion that is scheduled to be built in the years ahead.

The season saw the coaching structure of Steve Rimer and Robbie Hughes remain in place, Tim McCann returned in what would be his last year as captain of our 1st XI side and Paul Perry returned to lead the 2’s. Daniel Baynes stepped up to take on the captaining of the 3rd XI team and Ben Sindrey was in charge of the 4’s. Myself and Mick Freeman shared the 5th XI duties (with help from Trent Carr & Dean Freeman) with Neil Barker again leading our veterans. Thank you to all captains for your time and dedication in leading your teams, it is very much appreciated. A special thank you to Tim for his commitment and leadership as captain of our 1st XI team over many years.

We achieved several exciting on-field results with the 2’s, 3’s 4’s, 5’s and vets all making the finals. Players continued to improve, and it was great to see two of our junior coaches as well as committee members, Sam Cosham and Josh Quinlan, debut in the 1’s.

I know looking back the 1st XI players will be disappointed with the overall season, with several factors resulting in a last round relegation match. A victory however ensured we remained in premier division Dunstan Shield for next season. 5

As the highest ranked team in the ECA T20 competition, we were also given the opportunity to host the T20 grand final on HE Parker No1 oval. Despite finishing runners up, it was a great effort throughout the competition and hosting was an important fundraiser for the club.

Congratulations to Ben Sindrey and the 4th XI players on a remarkable win as underdogs and to Mick Freeman for leading the 5th XI to a terrific victory, particularly after the health battles he has endured during the past year. The 5’s were the most dominant side in the grade throughout the season and that showed when it mattered most.

Our junior boys and girls and Blasters kids continued to develop their skills under the watchful eye of Trent and our newly formed junior committee. Thank you, Trent, for all the effort you continue to put in with our juniors. A special mention to Brett Smith for setting up the club online registrations and to Prue Munro for all her work with the working with children checks.

In terms of our social calendar, we started the season with a bang celebrating Mick’s 300th game milestone, our first function at the Scout Hall. The trivia night was well attended by the usual suspects and a great fundraiser for the club. The Xmas Party and Pink Stumps/Ladies Day worked well in the outdoor surrounds of the Scout Hall at HE Parker and Past Players Day was as always, a great opportunity to catch up with old faces. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, all of our social functions scheduled for the end of the season were unable to go ahead. Due to ongoing restrictions, we proceeded with an online junior presentation. Despite not being able to celebrate as a group, it remained a great way to acknowledge participation and outstanding performances. At this stage, it is likely that the senior presentation will be going down a similar path.

As always, I would like to thank all our very loyal sponsors whose ongoing support of the HCC has been extraordinary, our loyal Montonians, and the wonderful continued support of the hard-working committee, volunteers, coaches, team managers and our sports chaplain Tim Argall. Thank you to the pavilion working group who have put in an extraordinary amount of time and energy over many years so that the pavilion met our own set of standards and specifications. A special thank you to Kingy for his ongoing assistance, to Michelle & Charlie Miller who are the most reliable and giving people and who contribute an enormous amount of time and effort and to my partner Jo who I can’t thank enough.

Thank you also to all those who have generously donated to the Australian Sports Foundation fund. The donations will be used to fit out our new pavilion.

At the end of the day, for me personally, the time and effort we all contribute is not just to play a game of . It’s about being a part of a culture that we can be proud of. Being in an environment that teaches and values respect, sportsmanship, leadership and commitment. A place where we can feel safe and supported, be ourselves and make lifelong friends. A club with the facilities and resources that help us develop our skills as cricketers. Being part of a community and club that supports each other is so important, particularly at a time like this.

6

Thank you for all your support and effort in overcoming the challenges we have faced this season. When it’s possible, we will welcome you back to enjoy our magnificent new pavilion.

Coach’s Report

This cricket season really was a mixed bag. For the first time since I have been at the club the first eleven did not play finals whilst the rest of the club did. Due to circumstances the personnel from the previous year had to change and this weakened the batting and bowling and we were not as well balanced as a side. If the year had a theme it would have been 30 runs light in most matches and that plus injuries combined with the weather really cruelled our chances. Bottom line though we just were not good enough over the course of the year. That did not stop Tim being excellent with the ball, Tom and Ben (on one leg) doing the job with the bat and Sedgey having a fine year with the gloves. If Tim and Ben are not at Heathmont next year both will leave huge holes to fill and both have made my job a lot easier to do.

As for the rest of the club as mentioned above, all our other teams qualified for finals with the fours and fives going on to win their deciders, well done to all the players involved. The club should be very pleased that youngsters with some real talent are working their way through the ranks and had an impact in these games.

Lastly a big thank you to Stu Dyer for running the nets this year, it was a huge weight off and meant I did not have to divide my time. And finally, to the players, committee and volunteers’ thanks again for your efforts around the club. The only thing left to do is ask the question, how does the club get better?

Junior Coordinator’s Report

Season 2019/20 will be remembered as one of the most challenging in the recent history for the Heathmont Cricket Club.

Last year the HCC committee set up a Junior sub-committee to assist in running the ever-expanding junior program. Due to the predicted nature of the season ahead, we wanted to form a strong committee and add some diversity to the group. Our junior sub-committee was one of the club’s great strengths this season. The members were as follows: Brett Smith, Glenn Arbuckle, Steve Williams, Sam Cosham, Desire Loy, Nerida Wynne-Primus, Simone Heathcote, Prue Munro, Matt West and Gary Hatfield-Dunn. The help of these individuals was amazing, and we would not have the program we have today without them.

Usually I would not single out any one person within a group of volunteers for their service, however I feel the need to mention Brett Smith. Brett was our Junior secretary, registrations mastermind, Mycricket guru, rolled out the live scoring at the club assisting all groups where needed. He also did the HCC website and Toyota raffle. Thank-you for your amazing service to the club this year Brett.

Other successes of the sub-committee were the sunscreen fundraiser, Toyota Raffle, Uniforms, online scoring, Safeguarding children and young people policy, Good sports Level 3, and WWC compliance. We had great support once again from our sponsors. Our major junior sponsor is KEBLES TRADING. Joe and the team have been with us for 4 seasons now and we are extremely thankful their ongoing support. Along with Kebles, we wish to thank Anne and Nicole at Toyworld Ferntree Gully and Ash at McDonalds for supplying award vouchers across the season for our juniors.

We came into the season knowing that we were undergoing a full pavilion redevelopment and that the day-to-day running of the club would be completely flipped on its head. What we didn’t expect was the impact of the coronavirus at the season’s end. Fortunately, due to the hard work of Matt Carr and the HCC committee we were able to soften the impact of this major hurdle by securing the services of the Scout hall and the bowls club to have some sort of normality. Next season is only a hop, skip and jump away and I cannot wait to welcome you all into our new pavilion.

Game day equipment was kept in shipping containers and unpacked and packed for each day’s play and parents and kids alike were quick to help set-up. For this I give my thanks.

The grading of the teams is always challenging; however, this season saw the BHRDCA take this task away from clubs and they ranked the sides based on quality and quantity of the playing groups for each club. Heathmont saw grading fall as follows: U14A, U/14B, U/12A and U/12B.

Given what we know now, in regards to wins and losses, this was proven to be a great challenge for our kids, however we did not have luck on our side at any stage and with weather deciding many games, the season could have looked a lot different.

If I was asked if I think we should have been graded differently, I would say No, I wouldn’t change it of anything. Most of our kids were bottom age and the amount of experience our kids learned from this year was invaluable and it will set them up for next season.

To add to our season of challenges, we lost the use of the Heathmont College from January onwards due to School upgrades. Fortunately, we were able to use Proclamation Park in Ringwood for Fast 9s and Super 7s games. Again, the parent’s help in assisting set-up and pack-up was of great assistance.

8

We were able to complete the on-field season before the coronavirus restrictions took place. For this we can certainly count ourselves lucky. The virus meant we were unable to conduct our traditional junior presentation and we opted for an online version whereby kids and parents could log-on and follow the presentation from the safety of their homes. As our community tackles the virus it is important to be thankful to those close to us, treasure the time we spend with our families and not sweat the small stuff. I challenge all families to do the same.

I want to thank all the parents and families for their help this year - you may think you didn’t do anything, but simply packing up a few chairs, picking up some rubbish, car-pooling etc all adds up and is very much appreciated.

Finally, I wish to thank Matt Carr and the executive committee for their help this season. We offer a great program because of the work the executive and members do and keep things affordable to all whilst also offering turf cricket to junior players wishing to develop into senior cricket. Well done Matt.

The Heathmont Cricket Club is a strong club because of the relationships we grow. As the coordinator, I am all about learning, participation and fun. I care about the kids getting out there and giving it their best, listening to their coaches and creating friendships rather than wins and losses. Something that I will continue to champion into future seasons.

There is obviously a ‘wait and see’ factor moving forward in relation to pre-season training and gatherings and we will advise further as we know more. I wish you and your families all the very best for the winter months and look forward to seeing you all again soon. Please stay safe and look after yourselves. As always, if you need anything don’t hesitate to contact me.

Team Reports and Statistics First XI (Dunstan Shield) 1st XI Match Results Summary ( T20 games and finals not included) Matches Played 14 Wins 3 Draws 4 Losses 7 Batting 1969 runs losing 105 wickets @ 18.75 Bowling 82 wickets @ 26.09 Points 30 Percentage 0.719 Ladder position 7th 1st XI Captain’s Report Due to the clubroom rebuild, it was a difficult season to generate enthusiasm. Particularly early on where players struggled to balance pre-game focus between the additional set-up, warm ups, on top of concerns of gloomy weather with little to no shelter.

Despite this, there was a good underlying vibe in the camp, with player trust in their team mates quite high after a strong finish and taste of finals in the season prior. Disappointing that Hasitha couldn’t get back to Oz this season but ably replaced through the welcoming of Sachin. Great also to see the return of Gaz, a new face in Bevan and debuts to Cosh and Bernie.

Some tough opposition, combined with a couple of key injuries didn’t assist us in early games, but we did enough to stay in touch with the four at Xmas. The boys were getting excited with a couple of dominant wins and a favourable draw in the new year, only to have it dashed by conditions outside of our control. We put ourselves in nearly an unbeatable position in three consecutive games against Marcellin and Surrey Hills, only to have rain set in and be handed the three points. With finals then out of reach, it was pleasing to end the season with a big win over Ashburton, with this result also confirming their relegation fate.

I don’t like using excuses, so when I look at the season in review, we only have ourselves to blame for the poor start. This is the second season in a row we haven’t got out of the blocks. Last season we came home strong and made finals however there was no margin for error so we got lucky. We now know we can’t rely on this every season because our luck ran out.

From a player contribution perspective, really pleased with Tommy with the bat. His maturity and consistency continue to grow each year and I am sure a leadership role beckons in the not too distant future. Dela also took great steps forward and cemented a batting position higher up the order, whilst Benny’s contribution was significant as always. From a bowling perspective, we struggled taking consistent wickets and therefore bowling sides out proved to be our biggest challenge. Suchin and Gaz provided some highlights here and Sedgey was terrific behind the stumps showing great resilience - when knocked down he just got straight back up!

After 13 years as captain and 25 years of 1st XI cricket at Heathmont my time is coming to a close. Whilst I hope to still be able to play a few games at the top level, I certainly won’t have the time to put into any leadership role. Many of our younger players have now had a handful of years experience playing in Dunstan and should be primed to take on the extra responsibility. I would like to thank all involved for your ongoing support and commitment; it truly is a great club so let’s make sure this tradition continues.

2nd XI Captain’s Report What a tumultuous season it was, with torrential rain, bushfires, and humid monsoon conditions. We probably underachieved in some respects to be honest. Although we finished 3rd, we didn’t really have any consistency throughout the year, much like the season itself. What we did though is give our younger players like Michael Yuan and Cooper Sticht an opportunity to fulfill under pressure and important roles. Who will forget Mick's match winning 5/8 and 46 against Hawthorn along with many other solid performances, and Cooper's first innings of 53 coming in at 4/16 helping us win chasing 308 and a top score of 30 in the semi-final.

There were several other great performances throughout the year, most notably a consistent Sam Batten with his match winning 122 not out vs Mont Albert, Josh Quinlan and Sam Cosham getting their first crack in the 1st XI with their hard work and effort, James Taylor putting his hand up to do what was required with his batting and bowling, Tim Swoboda always threatening with the ball and getting his highest score batting at 7 with a superb 75 at Mont Albert, Lal Hitimilage's hard work paying off with his batting and great keeping is a good sign for next year. Other players who came into the side produced when they were needed and showed they were up to the level.

The club is in a good position with a lot of younger players as well as seasoned players who have played decent cricket at a good level. I have no doubt any of these players would be of great service in the 1st XI in years to come and I'm very proud to be their captain and enjoy stepping on to the field each week with them. Sure, I'm disappointed we didn’t win the grand final as that is what we all aim for. A little bit more concentration and working out what is best for your game to get the best out of yourself on game day will lift the team and individuals to the next level. Play hard, respect the game, your teammates and opposition, enjoy the day, work hard at training on all areas, do the extra outside training to elevate to the next level and be there to share your success with others at the club who have given you the opportunity to be part of this great game.

Third XI (G-Turf) 3rd XI Match Results Summary (excluding finals) Matches Played 13 Wins 5 Draws 4 Losses 4 Batting 1322 runs losing 69 wickets @ 19.16 Bowling 92 wickets @ 19.28 Points 42 Percentage 0.994 Ladder position 4th (Lost Semi-final) 3rd XI Captain’s Report First and foremost, I would like to thank the Heathmont Cricket Club Committee for providing me with the opportunity to captain our 3rd XI cricket team. Being aware of the 3rd XI team achieving the ultimate success in previous seasons, I knew that it would not necessarily ensure future success for a variety of reasons.

At the commencement of the season, my objectives were as follows: • Play as a team & support each other, regardless of the situation • Provide opportunities for players to show their ability • Expose junior players to turf wickets and playing senior cricket • Encourage senior players to demonstrate good leadership and create a positive culture • Play the game in the correct spirit; and • Enjoy competing in cricket!

The season started off extremely well with three convincing wins from the first three games. Unfortunately, the following two games were abandoned due to the weather, and then we lost three of the next four games.

At the Christmas break we were in fourth place, with some improvements required when the season resumed, to qualify for the finals.

Some highlights up to this point were: • Josh Irish – 5 wkts for 7 runs, 3wkts for 15 runs and promoted to the 2nd XI • Ash Lamba – 91 runs

Unfortunately, we lost the first game after the break and the following two games were abandoned due to inclement weather. It was disappointing as we were in a winning position in both games.

We required a win in the last game of the home and away season to qualify for finals. We were up against Mont Albert and the weather reduced it from a two-day game to a one-day game. It was an extraordinary game with Heathmont making a total of 181 runs on a difficult batting pitch. A special mention goes to Ash Lamba for a magnificent 85 runs made under considerable pressure. Well done Ash; it was a brilliant innings!

27

Mont Albert lost numerous early wickets and it appeared it was going to be an easy victory; however, the game of cricket punishes complacency. Mont Albert put together some partnerships and the momentum of the game changed. It appeared we were going to lose the unlosable game. Scoring easily, a Mont Albert batsman hit two consecutive fours and only required 11 runs off three overs with wickets in hand. However, the next ball was a no-ball and the in-form batsman was run out attempting a second run. Daniel Wynne took the final wickets to win the game and guaranteed our progression into the finals.

Another special mention goes to Daniel Wynne aka ‘The Workhorse’. He took an incredible 5 wickets for 22 runs to win the game and take us to the finals.

It was a fantastic victory and I was exceptionally proud of all the players for sticking together and winning a crucial match in difficult circumstances.

The following week we played Mulgrave in the semi-final. Unfortunately, we were beaten convincingly, and Mulgrave subsequently won the grand final the following week with another dominant performance.

Looking back on the season, there were many achievements that I would like to acknowledge: • Many of the players improved throughout the season • Several players were recognised for their excellent performance with promotion to the 2nd XI • Numerous junior cricketers performed well and will benefit from the experience • The work ethic during training showed that players were committed to improving • Unwavering support for their captain (me)

I feel the objectives outlined at the start of the season were well and truly achieved.

Personally, I would like to thank all of the 3rd XI team players this year. I felt extremely well supported throughout the year and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity and privilege to captain this team.

Thank you to the Heathmont Cricket Club committee, Steve (coach), the other captains, and the players for their efforts throughout the season.

Congratulations to all the teams, especially the 4th XI & 5th XI for winning the premiership and to Mick and Tom Freeman for winning best on ground – awesome effort!

Finally, I would like to pass on my sincerest gratitude to Michelle & Charlie Miller for your support with meals, drinks & many other duties. Also, to Matt & Jo – the effort you both put into the club is nothing short of outstanding and does not go unnoticed.

Overall, it has been a positive season for the Heathmont Cricket Club and next season has the potential to be even better. Bring it on!

4th XI Captain’s Report For the 1st time in at least 20 years Heathmont had four teams back on turf; with our home games at HE Parker on Sunday and away games on a Saturday. To go through and win the flag as probably the most inexperienced side in the grade is certainly a massive achievement, and one the guys should be very proud of. The way we carried ourselves on the field throughout the year was first rate and I think went a long way to us winning the flag.

What stood out in looking back at the season was just the even contribution across the board. It seemed every week someone new would stand up and perform, which I think was also reflective of our performance though the finals.

Highlights for the year include; • Jack McNeil 105 in round one • Jordan and Alex partnership of 143 against Donvale after being 5/70 • Stu Dyer’s consistent year with the bat, rarely failed • Alex knocks of 96 against Donvale and 67 against Hawthorn • Stu and Billy’s partnership for the 2nd in the semi-final of 135 (Billy 58, Stu 81) • Tom Freeman’s Grand Final performance with both bat and ball. An important 16 at the end batting at ten, his bowling figure speak for themselves 26/9/5/30 • Improvement through the season from Zane, Michael and Billy who all played key roles during the finals

A couple of thank yous; • Thank you to Stu Dyer who did a great job captaining in the couple of games I missed, along with always being a great support through the year. • Thanks for all those players who graced the field for the 4thXI this year and hopefully a few you will be pushing into higher grades next year.

Go Monts!

5th XI Captain’s Report An exciting start to the season with Mick Freeman playing his 300th game in an away match vs Salvation Army Waverley. With many joining in the festivities including life members brother Dean, Frank McCann and Craig Douglas amongst other famous Heathmont faces. We marked the milestone again the following week this time back at home on HE Parker No 2. The most significant part of the celebrations however was Mick’s return to playing after being out with illness the previous season.

A balance between the old Heathmont players and the new with the inclusion of the likes of Ben Campbell. Ben was absolutely superb in the field throughout the season and most notably the ‘arm’, who could forget his catch in the grand final – WOW! Senthil Selvapathy and Chirag Kalola added some real grunt with bat and ball and of course not to mention new club favourite Kamal Bhatti. Old new recruit Dave Carr also dusted off the whites for a full season after a lengthy retirement. Dean Freeman, Cam Saw, Trent Carr, Neil Barker, Phil Woolan and Brent Price all ensured we would have a strong team throughout the season.

It is rare that the most improved player in the team happens to be a 50+ year old and our Vets Captain. Neil Barker toiled, drifted and wobbled his accurate seamers to help steer the Montas into the Grand Final, with a starring semi-final performance of 4/8.

Mick wanted to make special mention to his close mate Cam Saw for his support during the year and to Trent Carr for stepping up on match day to assist in captaining and other tasks. Also, to his brother Dean who chipped in after a foot injury forced me to step aside.

To win any premiership is special, but given the circumstances surrounding Mick’s health, it was fitting that he was able to skipper the team with a Man of the Match performance. Mick and his brother out in the middle, hitting the winning runs and securing another premiership for the Montas!

Under 16 Unfortunately, we were unable to field an Under 16 team this season due to low numbers.

Under 14-A (Friday A-Grade) U14-A Coach’s Report With the rise of talent that is happening at Heathmont it was fitting we try and have a crack at A Grade this season. While the results did not go our way and weather certainly played a part, I felt we made progress with the outstanding young men we have in our club.

I was again blessed to have Brett Smith as my Team Manager and l thank him for all his time and efforts throughout the season. Brett was always communicating with the families and scored every week. Thanks again for your help and friendship.

I would like to thank Matt and Trent Carr for allowing me to be coach again for the season. It has been great to personally watch the rise of the Heathmont Cricket Club. The new clubrooms are going to be a highlight for many years to come.

Thanks to all the lads that played under me this season. You were a lot of fun to coach and made every Friday easy. We welcomed some new players to the group, and all fitted in really well.

I thank all the parents for their efforts and support to me and the boys. It is a thankless task driving and been taxi for the season – well done again to all of you.

Good luck in the future to all the lads on their cricket journey – some will transition to Under 16 cricket and beyond. I will watch them carefully and with interest to see their Star rise.

Congratulations to all award winners – you have performed well and are deserving of the awards.

Go Montas!!

Under 14-B (Friday B-Grade) U14-B Coach’s Report The U14B team has enjoyed a great season of cricket. We were competitive in most games and we played with a great team spirit.

Having been involved with most of the players over the last few years one of the most pleasing aspects is to see the development and improvement in all the players. This was definitely the case this year, with all players taking at least one wicket and being involved in lots of great catches and run outs. It was also great to see the confidence the players gained in their batting throughout the season.

Two of the highlights of the year were the win and draw against Glen Waverley. Our win was one of our great team efforts because all players contributed with either the bat or ball and backed it up with a terrific fielding display. Our draw went down to the last ball of the match. A match which also saw Brendan make the top score of the season with a very well made 65. All players should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves on the field and the effort they put in all season.

Well done to Brendan on his first season as captain – it is never an easy task receiving lots of advice from fellow players, but he did a great job with his field settings and ensured everyone got a fair go with bowling.

Also, I would like to acknowledge and thank Steve Williams for the time and effort he put in to coaching the boys and assisting on game nights – very much appreciated!

A big thank-you to all the parents that helped with umpiring and scoring.

Lastly thanks to the junior committee and especially Trent and Matt Carr for their amazing contributions that enables the season to run so smoothly.

I really hope all players enjoyed their cricket and will come back and play again next season. It will be fantastic to have our new club rooms available.

Under 12-A (Friday A-Grade) U12-A Coach’s Report For many of the boys, this season was the first real taste of playing competitive cricket for points. While 3 of the boys had played U12’s previously (James, Ethan and Matt), most of the boys were faced with the challenge of a harder ball, better bowlers and better batsmen that would regularly challenge their skill set. Additionally, being placed in A grade would see us regularly play against teams with players who were 1-2 years older and could bat, bowl and field at a higher standard more consistently than what they became accustomed to in previous levels.

While this year was challenging from a results point of view, the boys were extremely competitive in every game played and showed that they could handle themselves at a higher level. Sometimes you do need a bit of luck to go your way in cricket, and it was not until after Christmas where we had some luck go our way and played with a bit more freedom. As coaches we are very proud of the boys for persisting and playing together as a team throughout the year, and that with a bit of consistency in all aspects of the game over a longer period (and some luck too), they will no doubt be very strong in the years ahead.

Our highlight for the season was our win at Yarraleen after it looked unlikely that we would play in the second week. This game was a great result of all the hard work we had put in each week. We went into the second week 8 runs behind and needing to take 1 wicket to bowl the opposition out, yet the rain and lightning in the second week made it look unlikely that we would play. However, the cricket gods were in our favour and we managed to start and get 20 runs in front to give us a chance of winning. It then took a really disciplined bowling effort and a brilliant run out from Lewis that ultimately gave us the win by 10 runs. It was a fantastic team effort where each boy strongly contributed to the result, and one of the best wins that we have had as a group over the last few years.

We wish to thank the parents support throughout the season both on game day and at training. In particular, we wish to thank Nerida Wynne-Primus once again for being our scorer during the year (best scorer in the comp), Mel and Kevin for their help and support at training and game day, and Lynette for organising our tea breaks during the year. We greatly appreciate their help and support not just this year, but in the previous seasons gone by too, so thank you! Josh and I also wish to particularly thank Mia and Caitlyn for playing a game with us early in the year when we were short of players. Both girls fitted in seamlessly in that game and made a great contribution to our side. It was fair to say that everyone was impressed by their efforts and taught our boys a few lessons too!

To the boys, we thank you for your efforts this season. We have learnt a lot of things together over the course of the year that will no doubt be beneficial to your cricket in the long term. We have a very talented group of HCC cricketers amongst our team and are very capable of achieving some massive things together both individually and as a team. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch and coach you boys over the last few years, and we are so excited to watch you boys play in the many years to come.

Under 12-B (Friday B-Grade) U12-B Coach’s Report This season we had a very young and inexperienced team. Firstly I would like to thank Gary Hatfield- Dunn for helping out as much as he could at trainings and on game days, Josh Quinlan for taking over the coaching in the later part of the season, Hasitha Tirikawala for doing the online scoring for most weeks when I was not present and also to Prue Munro for doing all the team manager duties and for all your work behind the scenes for the club.

I would like to say I am very impressed with our improvement in skills from the start to the end of the season. For our kids very new to competitive cricket it was always going to be a challenge, with most players playing their first season in under 12s or currently playing in the Fast 9s program. The behaviour they showed however on and off the field, despite results, was a very positive thing to witness. I do not think I have met a more fun and interesting bunch of young and keen cricketers! Award winners • Batting: Jack Pearson Jack was a solid contributor throughout the whole season and did what was asked each and every week. I was very impressed with how he carried himself out onto the field each week and to see how he was able to improve game by game.

• Bowling: Alex Le Even though Alex always wanted to focus on his wicket keeping, it was always hard to fulfill his wishes as every time I would bring him on, he was a guaranteed wicket!

• Fielding: Trevin Tirikawala He was always positive in the field and would always be alert and asking questions when needed! I was very impressed with his fielding as he was a vital asset to the team.

• Coach’s: Daniel Hall Could not ask for a better kid to work with to be honest! Hard working, determined and would always be picking my brains and wanting to learn as much as possible. This hard work shone through on game days. He should be very proud of himself of how he has developed over the course of the season.

• MVP: Jack Pearson: There was no doubt that Jack would win this award, especially with how he was playing towards the end of the season! Rotated the strike when batting, bowled outside off, attacked the stumps! And I was really impressed with his attack in the field also. Jack proved to be the complete package throughout the season, and I am very proud of him.

Hope that everyone really enjoyed the season because I know I did! Please keep practicing at home in whichever fashion possible (there are funny videos online doing plenty of cricketing activities!) As we enter an unknown stage I hope that everyone keeps safe and hopefully we get through the other end better than ever before!

Fast 9s Fast 9s Coach’s Report This year’s Fast 9 team was an amalgamation of the two Super 7s teams from the previous year and the kids “jelled” really well as a group. We were also joined by a new recruit Rohan Selvarajah, a great all-rounder who can consider himself unlucky missing out on an individual award.

The main differences from the 7’s competition is when you’re out, you’re out. Although, we did receive two requests from opposition coaches for a slight “tweaking” of the rules – no golden ducks and batsman to face 6 balls. We also had differing interpretation of the “no ball” bounce rule – is it two bounces or 3, does it still count if the player hits it etc. Innings were played up to 25 over per innings, (which is more than the older youth age groups) which led to some “full morning” cricket sessions.

We trialled the new scoring technology and we did suffer delays due to IPAD overheating and some general “gremlins” in the application which resulted in using the “book” as a backup at times.

It was great to see all the players improve throughout the season, especially positional awareness when in the field and backing up for any potential “overthrows” and I was also impressed numerous volunteers for the wicketkeeper position each week.

Award Winners: • Batting: Jack Pearson: Jack had a standout year with the bat scoring 161 runs @ 23.00 • Bowling: Christina Bretel: Christina always seemed to take wickets each time she bowled which was amazing. 9 wickets @ 16.44 • Fielding: Liam Walter. Liam was outstanding in the field this year, highlighted by numerous catches behind the stumps- well done Liam. • Coach’s award: Hamish Bithell. Hamish always gives 100% effort and commitment to the team. His skills keep improving each week and he has an infectious bubbly personality which makes him a team favourite. Congratulations Hamish. • MVP: Christina Bretel: The MVP award is given to Christina Bretel, who’s work with bat made her an ideal partner to play with as well as scoring numerous runs herself. She was also called up to play for the League’s Girls rep team which really accelerated her skills and game awareness. Congratulations on a great season.

A lot of the players also played up in the U12s age group which exposed them to a more serious level of competition and enabled them to get a decent amount of weekly match time.

Daniel Hall was also able to help-out on numerous times when we were missing a player or two- Thank you Daniel.

Without a dedicated Coach for the team, the parents were a great help, with special thanks to Andy Munro who when available was able to provide game day Coaching support. I would also like to thank the other parents who helped with the Umpiring, Scoring and set up/clear up throughout the season – it made my job a lot easier.

Girls (Stage 1 & 2) Girls Coach’s Report Could not be happier with the progress of the girls team this year. We basically played every week with 10. In the spring season the girls made the grand final in stage 1 after winning 5 games in a row and losing just one game. It was a great experience and exciting for the girls to play off and give their best to finish second out of 12 teams.

The girls stepped up to stage 2 and came a very commendable 4th out of 8 teams winning 3 out of 7 against very good opposition. The top few teams commented positively on the fielding and bowling of our girls.

I was very pleased with how hard the girls try new things to improve and the training is fantastic. There are no complaints when training goes for two hours on a Sunday from the parents and girls, because I think they are learning a lot about their own cricket and things they need to focus on, and of course the competition to take my money which is highly motivational for the girls.

The girls deserve all the praise for a great season, and I know the club is very happy with the progress. I’m already looking forward to next season, and with another growth spurt and extra strength, I think the girls can get to understand more of their own game and how they can be the best they can be.

It’s a shame the girls could not accept their awards for a terrific season. I was not aware that there were individual awards due to elevating to Stage 2. Congratulations on the award winners for batting, bowling and MVP. In addition, our fielding award went to Sophie Johnson for a great first year for her keeping and consistently good fielding, and not forgetting her first game in which she got 3 wickets and a run out. The coaches award went to Tiasha who is our smallest and bravest player, who continually goes out to bat against older and more experienced players. Not only that, Tiasha is a really important part of the team with her accurate bowling and fantastic nature as a kid in general. I wish I could give them all the coaches award because I’m delighted to be the coach of such a wonderful bunch of funny, witty, courageous, co-operative and talented kids, which is a great reflection on the parents who devote their time to supporting their cricket journey.

Thanks to the parents and club for helping throughout the year. The team cannot function without the support from parents and officials and I really do appreciate you all being part of the girl’s season.

Super 7s Super 7s Coordinator’s Report Super 7s (or Stage 1) is the introductory level into junior cricket. This year we had 2 teams of Super 7s – GOLD and BLUE. Matt Carr and I started the season attending games to show everyone how to set up a game and the tasks required to be the host team.

We started the season with 11 players, the perfect number for two teams. Within the first month, we had most of the kids away for a school function. Rather than forfeit, I asked four kids from the Master blasters to help field a team. Arush, Raghav, Fenil and Alby joined in the fun and had a ball. Instead of pushing them back into the blasters, these kids became part of the 7s family and never looked back.

Our first game came along and the kids were very green. They were unsure how and when to run between wickets, how to ‘back up’ in both the field or batting, walking in with the bowler was non- existent, and we even had kids crossing to the off-side to field balls when they were at mid-wicket. It was all a bit of fun and we learned where we needed to start with our training. We held training on a Wednesday night which was well attended ALL SEASON. They were all keen to learn - we started slowly and by season’s end, they knew what to expect on the training track. The fact that most kids trained each week meant that they were able to really progress quickly in their learning.

I want to thank ALL the parents for their enthusiasm in helping the teams. NOT ONCE did I score OR umpire out in the middle. I decided that I would leave this to the parents to run the team and I would be there to watch and give advice. This will bear fruit in the coming seasons when everyone is comfortable doing a stint of scoring, umpiring or team managing. A special thanks in no particular order to Amit, Mark, Stu, Di, Sen, Adam, Liam, Kate, Eddie, Tim and all the other parents who make the game special for the kids.

Overall is was a tremendously successful start to the kid’s cricketing pathway. I look forward to seeing how they progress in the Fast 9s next year.

Junior Blasters and Master Blasters Clinic Coordinator’s Report What a great year of Blasters we had. Numbers were again strong with 52 kids across the two programs. This was extra pleasing considering we did not have use of a pavilion.

We had 43 Junior Blasters whom we split into 5 groups based on age. Myself, Isaac Mumford, Aidan Miller and Josh Irish were joined this season by Bevan Roberts who moved into the area with his young family and was keen to join in the chaos with us. We all took a group each and with the enthusiastic help from a great bunch of parents, we were able to introduce the basics of cricket to kids aged between 4 and 7.

Our Master Blaster numbers were down a touch, but this was expected given the large number the previous season. We had 9 kids in this group and were able to introduce them to the more advanced details of the game and by seasons end, we had them in pads and helmets facing balls for the first time in readiness for Super 7s cricket. We opened the opportunity to play up in the Super 7s to the kids who wanted a challenge. Of this, Tharun, Arush, Fenil, Alby and Raghav stepped up to the plate and enjoyed themselves in the 7s for the year. Well done to all the kids.

Without the parents help, the program simply wouldn’t run. I wish to thank all the parents for their assistance on Saturday morning and in particular Dave Carr and Tom Langford for assisting with the Kinder aged kids and the BBQs and also Elise Carr and Tori Ferry for running the weekly awards each session. Your help was invaluable, and I very much appreciated it.

Stay safe, look after yourselves and I look forward to yet another year of Blasters in 2020/21.

Vets Captain’s Report Season 19/20 on the whole was largely successful, eventually getting knocked out in a home semi- final. We picked up 2 new players in the off season being local Rob Kinister who found the club via the website and Warwick (did you say run or none) Peluso who most would know from his previous stints coaching our Heathmont juniors and a couple of seasons with our 4's and 5's.

We went through the season with only 15 players which is a remarkable feat and shows everyone's commitment and dedication and made my job so much easier so a big thank you to everyone. Apart from the 15 there were cameos from Matt (the Pres) Carr broken foot and all and Ian Rosthorn made his vets debut joining his dad Murray Matheson in our first father son in vets a very unique event. It was eventful with Rosey being out for a golden duck ruining their chance to bat together and muzza following soon after for the same score. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse Rosey at first slip next to dad dropped a straightforward catch second ball of the opposition innings, all that was soon forgotten when Rosey bowling, yes Ian Rosthorn bowling, drew a faint edge into dad's gloves. A truly magical moment.

All of our big guns were on fire at different stages of the season including and not limited to Rechsteiner, Ray Johnson, the big Magwah was superb, John (Joxy) Perry added a ton of class, Bags, the incredibly unlucky Simon Baron, Wassa with bat, ball and fielding and Greg Rose picking up wickets at will and Knighta making solid contributions. We won the first 5 in a row and then came up against some tough opposition going down in a semi-final we thought we should have won.

A great effort by all in a tough year with no rooms which wouldn't have happened without the incredible effort of Matt and Jo, Charlie and Michelle and others, thanks so much.

*Notes: 1. These statistics are based on information (scorebooks, annual reports, etc) available between 1980 & 2015/16, since then MyCricket data has been used. 2. Not all information is available (particularly in the lower grades), so the aggregates & averages of some players may be slightly misleading. 3. The list of players is based on those who were actively playing in season 1995/96 or have played since then. As such, there are many older players whose stats are unavailable. 4. This data currently does not include T20 games.

Special thanks to Ben Sindrey and James Briggs for compiling and maintaining these statistics.
