Dave Keane – Auckland Cricket’s ‘Groundsman of the Year’

Dave Keane – ‘Groundsman of the Year

Groundsman at Shore Road Reserve, Dave receives the Award from Auckland Cricket’s Anthony Bowler. Wonderful recognition – Dave has done a sterling job for us over the past 4 seasons producing pitches with pace and bounce and renowned as being fair to both batsmen and bowlers.

Above, Dave at work preparing the Shore Road pitch for our Reserves’ 2nd day of their last game of the season, 1 April. Note the strong covering of grass remaining, and a couple of spare strips, despite us hosting an Auckland A match and a couple of social games during the season. The pitch was a credit to Dave who has worked tirelessly, not only on this block but also on the grass pitches at Orakei Domain and Thos. Bloodworth Park.

Sadly, not all pitches in Auckland were prepared to such a high standard hence the value our Premier players put on playing “at home” at Shore Road Reserve.

LOCKIE FERGUSON hit the headlines last December on his selection for the New Zealand team about to take part in the Chappell Hadlee ODI Series. Congratulations Lockie, your pace added another dimension to the Black Cap’s attack and, eventually, the good fortune to be chosen by the Rising Pune Supergiant to play in the IPL. Not only that, his team won through to the Final where they lost in extraordinary circumstances in the last over to the Indians.

IPL triumph – Lockie, ‘Man of the Match’ for Rising Pune Supergiant, his figures were 4.1.7.2 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

9. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Chairman Craig Presland

The 2016/17 financial year and cricket season was another successful one for PCC as it seeks to become (or otherwise remain) the leading cricket club across the Auckland region, as stated in the Club’s 3-year Strategic Plan. I summarise the year as follows:

1. Overview The 2016/17 season started with junior playing numbers up 5% on prior season to 688, a pleasing result given 2015/16 had been up 13% on prior year following the success of the Cricket World Cup that was held in NZ and Australia in Feb / March 2015. With over 900 players across the junior and senior sections of the club we are now striving to reach 1,000 in 2017/18. The Club had 3 players chosen for the Auckland Aces, two contracted by the Auckland Cricket Association (ACA) at the start of the season as part of 16 professional players (Lockie Ferguson and Mark Chapman) and the other promoted during the latter half of the season (Ben Horne). Lockie also made his debut for NZ in one day cricket following consistently strong performances for the Auckland Aces while winning an IPL contract in March this year. On-field results were very positive overall, and in the case of the Men’s 2nd and 3rd XI’s simply outstanding without a game being lost by either team across the entire season. The Men’s Premier 1st XI however failed to win an ACA Men’s Premier title despite leading the Hedley Howarth 2-day competition for virtually all of the season only to be overtaken on the final day, a fate that had also fallen upon the team 12 months prior and against the same opposition at the same away venue. This side was desperately unlucky with this outcome. Our Junior rep results were very pleasing while representation as EDCA level was about as expected ie. proportional to playing numbers. Our financial results were in line with budget while a small surplus was achieved. Capital expenditure was minimal. PCC’s performance in meeting a wide range of targets as set by Auckland CA in our Service Level Agreement with them was very good at over 95% and ahead of almost of the other 15 cricket clubs in the region. Volunteer relations were positive overall, this reflective of the efforts and experience of our Junior Committee, Junior Grade Co-ordinators, and Board. Finally, the Club has recently appointed a Director of Cricket (Phil Horne) to lead the entire operations of PCC ie. all 10 work streams as detailed in the Club’s Strategic Plan. We are delighted to have Phil on board with us in this role after what was a thorough recruitment process with a very high level of interest shown in the position. All paid positions within the club, including all coaching staff, will report to Phil from 3rd July 2017, his first day in the job.

2. Playing Results: Junior ACA titles won (from grade 6 to grade 9/10): • Year 6a Plate Championship (Parnell Martin) • Year 7a Plate Championship (Parnell Hills) • Year 8 Premier Shield (Parnell Ferguson) • Year 9/10 T20 Premier Championship (Parnell Maroon) • Year 9/10 T20 A Grade Championship (Parnell White) • Under 14 Girls Future Hearts (Parnell Diamonds)

In terms of Auckland Districts rep cricket, EDCA came a very close second to North Harbour in the Peter A Badley Cup across the 5 Districts, PCC providing 37% of the players to EDCA teams ie. grades 7 to 12, male and female, which was in line with expectations given the respective junior playing numbers of AUCC and GUCC. In some cases, eligible PCC players were unavailable for selection due to the timing of these tournaments over the Dec / Jan months.

Annual Junior Rep Fixtures against neighbouring clubs (grades 3 to 7): v. Grafton United CC Nov 2016, 6 wins, 2 losses v. Auckland University CC, Dec 2016, 8 wins, 2 losses v. Howick Pakuranga CC, Feb 2017, 5 wins, 3 losses, one match tied v. Cornwall CC, March 2017, 4 wins, 4 losses

These results were encouraging when considering AUCC, HPCC and especially CCC all had more junior playing numbers than PCC during 2016/17. With the annual fixture against Cornwall CC the Club played for the Crowe / Morgan Trophy for the first time for the overall winner with in attendance on the day and the honours shared 4 matches each. PCC was once again served by an experienced and hard-working group of Grade-Coordinators whose planning and communication with parents remained critical to the junior section being run efficiently. Parent feedback provided in the post season survey has been very positive overall with over 80 responses received, well up on recent prior seasons. The junior section has also been very well served by Jeremy Boucher in his first full season as Junior Chairman whose proactive, personable and highly professional approach was very much welcomed. 10. The Club continued to provide professional coaching to all junior players from grade 4 and above, at no additional cost to parents, every 2 or 3 weeks across the entire season, these sessions also providing the opportunity for our volunteer coaches to learn more about the technical aspects of the game as well as how best to run a training session. Of critical importance to player development, on-field successes, off-field harmony and overall fun and enjoyment over the season is of course the number and capabilities of our volunteer parents as coaches, managers, umpires and scorers. After coaching junior cricket at PCC for 11 seasons now I am more convinced than ever that the sharing of the workload across all team parents is a key ingredient to having a happy and successful cricket season and as part of that PCC will continue to provide training sessions for its volunteer coaches, umpires and scorers early in the season. I would encourage all former players of the game to give something back to the sport by becoming a coach of a PCC junior team, the intrinsic rewards after providing sufficient effort and coaching support for the players are sure to be very satisfying. In particular I would like to thank the following people for their contributions over the year: • All volunteers who give up their time to see the club and their respective team(s) enjoy a happy and successful season. • All Grade Coordinators (grades 1 to 8) and Members of the Junior Committee. • Jeremy Boucher for his strong commitment and efforts spent as Junior Chairman. • Phil Lindberg as PCC Rep Grade Coordinator. • James Dudson and Murray Davis for your roles in representing PCC on the ECDA Committee, selecting EDCA teams, ensuring ACA Districts tournament successes etc.

Senior ACA titles won: • Grade Senior Reserve 2A, Limited Overs and Two Day Championships (our Men’s Seconds undefeated all season) • Grade Senior B2, Limited Overs and Two Day Championships (our Men’s Thirds undefeated all season) • T20 Sunday League 1B (Parnell Pounders)

ACA - All Men’s Grades, Individual Awards: • Lalit Bose, Highest Score (219 for Men’s Thirds, Nov 2016)

Our Premier Men’s team finished runners up in the ACA Hedley Howarth 2-day competition leading all the way throughout the season only to be overtaken by Takapuna on the last day’s play. The team performed admirably and was a credit to the Club, always playing within the spirit of cricket, under the astute captaincy of Dave Goddard and the highly experienced coaching of Ian Trott who has now completed his 10th consecutive season with PCC. Ian’s loyalty to PCC, as well as his proven coaching ability and all round organisational skills are greatly appreciated.

Our Men's Second and Third XI’s have both been promoted to higher grades next season following their outstanding seasons respectively with the following contributing significantly to the coaching, management and leadership of these teams: Seconds – Tom Landrigan (captain) and Roy Goodyear (coach / manager), Thirds: Peter Hickman (captain) and Richard Humphries (manager).

In addition, the Club fielded a Men’s 4th XI which came mid-way in the table.

I would like to thank the small group of the Men’s Premier team supporters for their very loyal following of the team across the season, Bryan Haggitt, Craig Speakman and Marc O’Gorman coming to mind along with many of the respective parents of the players.

3. Women’s Cricket: Parnell CC had 4 Girls teams playing this season with representation in each of the junior girls grades with over 50 girls at the Club. The Under 10 softball team played at Melville Park on Saturday mornings in collaboration with Diocesan School. We look forward to growing this set up and providing opportunities for young girls as they transition from the mixed junior grades through to hardball. The Parnell U12 Hardball team were finalists and were very competitive losing the final narrowly. The U14 Hardball team won the Post Xmas competition receiving a banner from Auckland Cricket as a reward. The Emerging Hearts is essentially a Womens Premier Reserve Grade which Parnell were competitive throughout the season. The ages of the team ranged from 12-17 years demonstrating how strong the Club's junior girls cricket is. Congratulations on Lexi Bassett for winning the Irene Baddley Memorial Rose Bowl for Outstanding Female Cricketer of the year. Lexi along with Emma Irwin represented Auckland Under 15 in winning the National Tournament in Wanganui. The 2017 EDCA Under 15 Girls squad was made up entirely by Parnell girls and represented Eastern District and the Club well. ACA have moved the Under 14 to Under 15 for the coming season and have renamed the Emerging Hearts as Premier Reserve. Parnell Cricket Club are aiming to 're-enter' the Premier Women's competition this coming season with some of the younger girls stepping up along with players from offshore and within the existing competition. In the past, Parnell's female cricketers looking to play at the highest club level in Auckland have had to leave the Club to realise their ambitions. From this season onwards, there will be a clear pathway for our young and aspiring female cricketers to stay within the Parnell environment that has made them such good players. The Board is fully committed to ensuring that the Premier Women's team is sustainable and long term as we progress towards being truly reflective of our community and offering equal opportunity in sport for both males and females.

11. A special thanks goes to Jonathon McInroy for all the hard work he has put in to Girls Cricket. Our girls are some of the strongest in the club game technically which is a testament to his planning and dedication. Jonathon will be the Premier Women's Coach for the 2017/18 season and will continue to be involved with the Junior Girls at all levels.

4. Senior Representation The following senior players gained higher honours over the season: • Lockie Ferguson NZ BLACKCAPS and Auckland Aces • Mark Chapman Auckland Aces • Ben Horne Auckland Aces, Auckland A (Capt) • Ganesh Ratnasabapathy Auckland A • Josh Fisher Auckland A • Michael Ravlic Auckland A

5. PCC Board of Directors The 2016/17 year saw a continuation of the same Board that was in place over 2015/16. In addition Rod Smith has remained as PCC President over 2016/17 and has attended all Board meetings upon the invitation of the Chairman, as has Bryan Haggitt (Life Member). Respective roles have been as follows:

• Chairman: Craig Presland • Junior Chairman: Jeremy Boucher • Senior Chairman: Venu Bhamidipaty • Honorary Treasurer: Greg James • Honorary Secretary: Craig Speakman • Women’s Cricket: Dominic Drumm

In addition, the Board has established ten Sub-Committees (work streams), current responsibilities as follows:

1. On field performance: Craig P, Venu, Jeremy 2. Facilities and Grounds: Rod (Head), Bryan, Craig P 3. Sponsorship: Venu (Head), Greg, Craig P 4. Marketing: Dominic 5. Finance: Greg James (Head), Craig S 6. Planning: Craig P, Craig S 7. Coaching: Greg James (Head), Venu, Jeremy 8. Schools: Dominic 9. Female Cricket: Dominic 10. Volunteer Relations: Jeremy Boucher (Head), Dominic, Craig P

Our Club Manager, Steve Hurdley, has had an active role to play across on all 10 Sub-Committees.

I would like to thank PCC’s hard working Board, Rod, Bryan and Steve and for their dedicated efforts and commitment, and absolute passion for PCC and the game itself, over the past 12 months. The level of knowledge and experience, as well as ability to roll the sleeves up and makes things happen, has been impressive.

6. Strategic Plan, 1st August 2016 to 31st July 2019 In July 2016 our Board, Rod, Bryan and Steve drafted a 3-year Strategic Plan after conducting a SWOT analysis of each of the above 10 work streams as well as seeking feedback from some Club Members. As part of this 3-year plan we have set priorities for our resources (time and $ funds), while this plan has been summarized as a one-page document that sits in our clubrooms.

7. Facilities and Grounds PCC continues to work closely with Grammar Juniors Rugby (GJR) in seeking the optimum design of the proposed new pavilion. As the lessee of Shore Road Reserve the Remuera Parnell Sports Community Charitable Trust (RPSCCT) is currently negotiating future lease terms with the land owner (Auckland Council) while several design options for the new pavilion are currently being sought. Each of PCC and GJR has 3 members who form the RPSCCT, this community sports Trust being chaired by Bryan Haggitt.

8. Financial Results PCC recorded a small surplus of $4,906 for the year, after depreciation, slightly ahead of budget. Revenues just reached the $400,000 mark on the back of increased membership and greater revenues from the TJC indoor training centre. The Club was prudent in its spending throughout the financial year while capital expenditure was minimal and mostly funded by the Peter Badley PCC Memorial Trust.

9. Sponsorship PCC remains very grateful for the support from its key commercial partners Ascot Radiology (lead sponsor) and Players Sports – a big thanks to these local businesses for their valued and ongoing contributions which enable the Club to provide its high level of coaching and support for its players. We could not provide the same cricket experience for our Members without this funding. Ascot Radiology in particular has been very loyal to PCC since 2011/12 and we have so much to thank this organisation for.

12. 10. Schools We have worked very hard to strengthen our relationship with all schools in our catchment including the addition of signed Memorandum’s of Understanding with each school outlining the respective commitments, scope of coaching services that PCC provides, use of respective facilities etc. Our growth in junior playing numbers in 2016/17, and ongoing relationship with these schools, has and will benefit from this work. Of particular mention would be the close association which the club has with St Kentigern Boys School through the efforts of Jonathan McInroy as one of PCC’s professional coaches, and Mr Grayson Aspinall, Deputy Head of the School.

11. Coaching Our experienced and highly capable professional coaching structure, headed by Ian Trott, continued to provide PCC with a point of difference in comparison with other clubs. This level of expertise and commitment from our professional coaching team, including Simon Herbst, Jonathan McInroy, Roy Goodyear and Tim McIntosh, ably supported by several younger overseas players (Henk and Schalk Conradie, Haydyn Storey and Lalit Bose), was both effective and well respected across our players and their parents.

12. Final Thanks Finally, I would like to thank Steve Hurdley for his loyalty and commitment to the club over the past 9 years as Club Manager and in particular over the past 24 months while I have performed my role as Chairman of PCC. With the recent appointment of the Director of Cricket, Steve’s day to day activity will change a little in his Club Manager role from July. Well done Steve, your loyalty to PCC, perseverance and determination are clearly evident as is your strength of relations with our parents, volunteers and coaches. We now look forward to the season ahead!

CELEBRATING JOCELYN GOODGER’S 20 YEARS SCORING and IAN TROTT’S 10 SEASONS COACHING at PARNELL

Dinner at the Northern Club 1. Guests of Honour Jocelyn and Ian and Jocelyn’s husband, Brynley 2. Guesr Speaker Roger Woolmer with Chairman Craig

Held last October in the Logan Campbell Room of the Northern Club, the Dinner was an outstanding success and fittingly celebrated the exceptional service given the Club by Jocelyn and Ian, as Scorer and Coach respectively.

Jocelyn has scored, as since realised, for even more that 20 years. Ian, coaching at Parnell for 10 seasons – unprecedented tenure and what marvellous results our Prems, and other teams coached by him, have produced.

Fifty attended the Dinner – a full house - and David Goddard, Premier Captain, and Tim McIntosh paid tribute to Jocelyn and Ian on behalf of the Club and, most particularly, the players.

Guest Speaker Roger Woolmer then added his tribute to both which came from the perspective of a noted and cricketer of vast knowledge. Roger recalled his early days of playing street cricket in Surrey with his mates – each adopted the persona of a Test cricketer for their single “Tests” and his was Bill Playle. Bill’s doggedness back in 1958 captured his imagination and, unwittingly, gave Roger a link to Parnell. This link was only realised years later when he came to stand at Shore Road and saw Bill’s photo on the Clubroom wall and his name on the Club’s Honours Board.

Ian Trott replied on behalf of Jocelyn and himself, acknowledging the tributes and emphasising the value of Jocelyn as Premier Scorer and how much he, and his wife Donna, have appreciated their time at Parnell. Ian particularly mentioned the value of the TJC and other facilities provided. Also the pleasure gained from seeing the the development of players over the 10 years – youngsters from their first experience of hard ball to opening for our Prems - and the support he had received from the the captains over those seasons. Very special thanks being due to the present incumbent, David Goddard, and to Tim McIntosh for his professionalism and contribution to the team over so many seasons. 13. OBITUARIES

DONALD JOHN (“DJ”/Don) CAMERON 20/2/1933 - 7/9/2016

Don - as seen by Malcolm Evans, a former NZ Herald colleague, and “at work”, - as Don said: “Someone had to do it”

Tributes flowed for Don following his death last September at the age of 83. NZ Herald colleagues David Leggat, Suzanne McFadden and Campbell Burnes and, in the Otago Daily Times, Ron Palenski, all wrote glowingly of his journalistic skills, his wonderful friendly, personality and the help he gave to young, aspiring reporters – Phil Gifford for one. Don also played cricket for Parnell – in the early 1950s, when he first arrived in Auckland from Dunedin. Just having left St Bedes, Oamaru, where he learned to enjoy all sports, he attended his local church – St James in Parnell. His parish priest, Father Ted Forsman, enlisted him immediately for Parnell. Practices, then, were at Eden Park and Don spent many hours bowling in the nets to Father Ted (who he relied on for transport) pre the normal Club practice. He recalled being ticked off for slacking by Club Captain Peter Badley when Don sneaked off for a cigarette – Peter being unaware that Don had already been bowling for over an hour prior to the rest of the teams arriving. A pace bowler in the lower grades, work prevented him progressing further. He knocked on the Herald’s door, gained a job as copyholder, then yachting reporter and personal sporting participation ended. For the next 40+ years Don progressed from yatching to cricket – standing in for Charles Guiney (“Cantab”), the long time cricket scribe, who preferred not to travel. Then rugby and understudying TP McLean. Sport reporting took him to all parts of New Zealand and then, many times, overseas – UK, France, Australia, the Caribbeean. His book “Caribbean Crusade”, relating tales of the 1972 NZ tour of the West Indies (and ’s 182) is a classic. Life was more relaxed in those days – reporters frequently travelled on the Team bus unless umbrage had been taken from something written. Don gained great respect by not backing down on issues that concerned him – unconcerned at the odd irate manager. What Don believed, went! In later times, Don took a keen interest in his Scottish heritage and was a past President of Clan Cameron NZ, Auckland Branch. And, of course, sport - the Barbarians and club rugby and all cricket matters. A very perceptive observer, Don enjoyed his odd visit to Shore Road to watch our Prems and to have a quiet beer amongst old friends and former colleagues.

Let the last words be Don’s – from his Introduction to his autobiography “Someone Had To Do It”: “I suggest that sport breeds a tolerance and a courtesy not always found in other human endeavours. These have been the attitudes that have made this sports reporting life a matter of such variety and charm and excitement. These are the sporting achievements which, every now and then when the Muse is smiling, allow even a humble sports writer to get the words in decent order.”

1. “Sleepy’s Corner”, Barbarians’ Rugby Club, Eden Park - Don donated his rugby library to the Barbarians, just as he donated his cricket books to Parnell. These are now in the Club Library, Mike Simpson Lounge 2. Don at Shore Road last season – with Bob Pearce, former NZ Herald colleague, Douglas Gilmore, Scottish visitor & your Editor 14. DESMOND JOHN (DES) MAGEE 5/5/1939 – 28/7/2016

EASTERN DISTRICTS CC’s FIRST DISTRICT PRIMARY SCHOOLBOYS TEAM – 1950 Back: Mr HEG Matthews (Selector), M Jensen, B Crooke, T Thorburn, J Aicken, Des Magee, M Florence, Mr C McMillin (Manager) Front: Ron Brown, D Garrett, I Brown, G McMillin (Captain), R Brown, R Spencer

Des, on the front foot as usual, for the Singles vs Marrieds at Hobson Park, 1960/61. ‘Keeper was Eddie Edwards And, Easter 1959, being introduced to the Governor General, Lord Cobham, as a member of the Parnell XI playing an Auckland XI

Des Magee was the quintessential Parnell cricketer of the 1950/60s – the “Hobson Park Days”. Not an “All Star”, a name reserved for the Club icons – Bert Sutcliffe, , Johnny Hayes and , rising stars, Bill Playle, Ross Morgan, and those to be stars, and Terrry Jarvis. Des did the hard work, unnoticed by rep. selectors, he grafted his way into our Senior (Premier) XI. One who practiced assiduously, Des gained promotion by virtue of consistently good scores for Eastern Seconds. A front foot batsman, Des drove in the V as one would do being mentored by Merv Wallace, and provided solidity to the middle order that was much needed as the “All Stars” were regularly plundered by Auckland and NZ selectors for rep teams. Des was the youngest of 4 children – a sister, Isobel and brothers Alex and Bobby. Bobby died young but Alex went on to represent Auckland at rugby and cricket for Ponsonby Balmoral the club that later become Cornwall. Alex, now in his mid 80s, continues to keep a keen eye on all cricket and rugby matters and remains a great Cornwall stalwart and Life Member. Des went to Meadowbank Primary School and then Seddon Memorial Technical College – at the same time, at both schools, as Bruce McLaren. As a boy, Des joined the Remuera Parnell Sports Club (now PCC’s Junior Section) and was chosen for the very first Eastern Districts Primary School rep team (see Team photo above). He played club cricket on Saturday afternoons in his secondary school days progressing to adult grades. Then solid batting and sound took him from the 2nds to the Seniors to play with the heroes of his day. Des made his Senior/Premier debut in 1958/59 and was a regular in that side except for 1964/65 when he stepped down to the Seconds to make way for some extremely promising youngsters including Terry Jarvis. However he hit 3 hundreds that season – 111, 118* and 114 and was back in the Seniors the next season hitting a ton for them and finishing second in the averages – 365 runs at 30.40 to Ross Morgan’s 399 at 38.30 and ahead of Terry and Peter McGregor. 1966/67, his last full season with Parnell, Des was again second in the batting – 408 at 40.80 and another ton, 105. Then he was away, moving to Australia. Des was back briefly playing just two further games for us in 1968/69. Work – from school, Des went into the printing trade, serving his apprenticeship and becoming a Typographer. Mid 1960s, Des wanted change and, as mentioned, headed for Australia. First Melbourne where he played senior cricket 15. for West Footscray CC for a couple of seasons and for whom he scored a . Moving on to the Queensland country town of Dalby, where he worked for the local newspaper and, finally, Brisbane. There he was Typographer for what was then known as the Daily Sun. During his travels, Des met and married Margaret but they had no children. Margaret died a number of years ago and from that time Des’s heath started to deteriorate and he had to endure a number of surgeries in later life. Des had a great sense of humour, was always willing to help around the Club and, along with many cricketers in those days, a passionate interest in horse racing. And the odd punt! Des – a wonderful Club and team mate, R.I.P.

For Parnell in all Grades, Des scored: 4107 runs 628 best season 118 highest score 5 centuries took 11 wickets & held 54 catches His Senior/Premier Career – 1958/59 - 1968/69: 87 inn 25 no 1601 runs 105 hs 25.82 ave 2 centuries Bowling 1/11 Catches 26

16.

Wayne joined Parnell in his teens playing his first games in 1957/58. A top prospect, he went straight into our First Club XI (now our Thirds) and the next season was promoted to Eastern Seconds. 1959/60, having hit his first ton – 119 – for the Seconds, made his Senior (Premier) debut. Wayne consolidated his position the next and successive seasons.

1962/63 saw Wayne become the regular opener with Terry Jarvis – both totalled over 300 runs for the season, a large total in those days. Wayne’s 132* was the only century scored and the Annual Report commented that “ground fielding was very good with Wayne Middleton and Bill Playle standing out” – high praise indeed, Bill was renowned in Test circles for his fielding – spoken of in the same breath as Colin Bland.

Selection for the Auckland U23 team came in 1963/64. The Tournament was in New Plymouth with Wayne opening with Terry. Wayne played in the first two of three games and Auckland was pipped on the countback to the winner, Otago.

A member of the 1965/66 Championship winning team, Wayne continued to be an invaluable member for a couple more seasons before heading overseas. At Wayne’s funeral, Clive Imrie, a ship mate on the voyage to UK and through that time overseas to their returning overland via Iran, Afghanistan and India told of some hilarious times – how Wayne’s perkiness, cheek even, got them into and then out of trouble. Dennis Bygrave spoke of Waynes later days back at Parnell and how he related so well to both team mates and the opposition, too.

During those times Wayne married Glenis and his cheerfulness and sunny nature shone through. A wonderful, positive and successful person, playing days over Wayne, by now an Hon. Vice President, continued to keep a close watch on Parnell’s results and the progress of a couple of young neighbours, James Walsh and Tom Talbot.

Wayne’s Premier record 1959/60 – 1973/74: 157 innings (11 not outs) for 2746 runs with 132* his highest of 4 centuries. He took 47 catches

FROM THE PAST – MARRIED vs. SINGLE, 1960/61 Des Magee’s passing brought a number of photos out of the archives and with them the memories of those marvellous Hobson Park days. Sunday social games were frequent – keenly fought, a great deal of banter and camaraderie. These photos were taken by the late Bill Percival, a very keen photographer and responsible for many of the photos in store:

1. Married Team: Back Charlie Melvile, Frank Fenton, Glenn Storey, Eric Giles, Ted Sutherland, Sam Sukias Front Merv Wallace, Eddie Edwards, Clem Mason, Keith Mayne, Ray Emery 2. Single Team: Back Graham Meek, John McGregor, Ross Edwards, Jack Forsman, John Ryan, Roger Paul Front Des Magee, Ian Robinson, Peter McGregor, Bill Carson, Johnny Carson Some useful players – Marrieds had former Test players Merv and Ray, Eddie kept for West Australia and Eric opened the batting for Auckland. For the Singles – Ross played 20 Tests for Australia (1171 runs at 40.37), Peter played Plunket Sield cricket for Auckland, Wellington, Northern and Central Districts and Johnny for Auckland and Northern Districts.

Drinks, a sophisticated cart – on such Sundays the drinks came in large, brown, quart bottles contained in wooden crates.

17. MERV WALLACE LUNCHEON,17/12/2016 – CELEBRATING MERV’S “TON” Merv Wallace b. 19/12/1916 d. 21/3/2008

1. Merv – 1933/34, 17 years old, a member of Parnell’s Championship winning team. He scored 296 runs at 29.60 – 112* hs 2. At Lord’s, 1949 – Merv toured England twice - in 1937 he scored 1641 at 41.02 an, in 1949, 1722 runs at 49.20 3. At Hobson Park late 1950s – note Merv is wearing his Parnell cap. For Parnell, between 1932/33 and 1968/69 in club games, Merv amassed 10299 runs at 54.49. He hit 25 centuries for Parnell, 5 over 200, the highest being 231*

On 17 December, with Merv’s family – Vonnie, his widow, Greg and Adele and their families, we celebrated what would have been Merv’s 100th birthday. A great excuse for a Reunion! Wonderful support – some 60 attended for Lunch - a great tribute to Merv and the legacy he left. Present, in addition to Merv’s son-in-law Grant Fox and grandson, Ryan Fox, were many past and present cricketers. Most notable being past NZ captains – JR (John) Reid and Mark Burgess plus the President of Auckland Cricket Association, Rex Hooton. Also ACA Past President and Life Member John Sparling and several notable players including Test opening batsmen Roger Harris, Phil Horne and Tim McIntosh. Many old time Parnell players reminisced, MPs Paul Goldsmith and David Seymour and Kit Parkinson, Deputy Chairman, Orakei Local Board were also present. Great to see Neville Darrow and Geoff Cooke back at the Club - Neville played under Merv’s captaincy in the 1950s and Geoff is one of the last Hobson Parkers. Wayne Wheeler rustled up a large contingent of lads from the 1990s – contemporaries of, and ones who had been coached by, Greg Wallace. Greg did sterling service with his coaching of our Prems in those Orakei years – he certainly inherited a great deal of Merv’s skills and the ability to impart knowledge. The Day was a resounding success – thanks go to Jeff Blackburn who suggested this commemoration, to all who attended and to those who did so much behind the scenes – Donna Trott who managed the catering with help from Jenny Haggitt, Ashwin who helped set up and Phil Horne who cleaned up the kitchen after lunch – a brilliant job! Last, but not least, huge thanks to Manager Steve Hurdley who helped set up/take down/clean up – work behind the scenes essential to the success of the Day! Outside, on Shore Road Reserve, our present Premier team was notching up a 1st innings win against Takapuna, eventual Championship winner, thanks to Mitch McCann hitting 103. This was Mitch’s maiden ton for the Club.

1. The younger generation - Wallace and Fox families 2. Greg Wallace addressing the gathering on behalf of the Family

A good keen group – contemplating forming a 2nd Pressies XI? And in the kitchen – lunch for 60+ plus the Prem players

18. JUNIOR CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Jeremy Boucher, Juniors’ Chairman

It is with great pleasure that I present my 1st report as Junior Chairman for Parnell Cricket Club to the annual review. My report covers what has been a very enjoyable year for myself and I am pleased to say a successful year for the Club.

As a Board, we want our Club to be the preferred cricket club across the Auckland region and we aim in all that we do to provide an inclusive cricket experience, full of opportunity for everyone to develop their own skills and most importantly to create an environment of fun and enjoyment. Our Club Mantra enshrining equal opportunity for all players summarises this well and guides us in our approach. We take care every year to explain this carefully to all our new and returning coaches to ensure they have a full understanding of what we will and won’t accept. We don’t get everything right but the mantra and philosophy are effective. I am pleased to report that ‘in the main’ this mantra has again produced good results for us through the course of the past year.

As you have read in the Chairman’s report this year we successfully provided a great cricket experience for 688 Junior cricketers. With approx. 900 players in the club, the Junior section of the club remains crucial to the success and health of our club. Membership is solid through all the age grades with Year 6 producing an unprecedented lift in membership of +18% on the prior year. We aren’t the biggest club in Auckland but we are on the way to being the preferred cricket club as evidenced by the welcome influx of players we had at the start of the season from other clubs in Auckland.

We have put 60 teams out over the course of the season including 3 x Junior girls teams. We are the only club in Auckland to have registered 3 Premier Teams in each of the Grade 6, 7 and 8 age groups as we aim to offer players in our club the opportunity to play a more competitive brand of cricket.

We are aiming as we enter the 2017 / 18 season to make big strides in Female / Girls cricket. Dominic Drumm who leads this section of our club will no doubt cover our aspirations in more detail in his report but we are aiming to establish and provide a great pathway for all the girls playing cricket in our club and encourage more girls to not only start playing cricket but also to join Parnell Cricket Club to further their cricketing aspirations.

As far as results go, we’ve done well as you have seen from our Chairman’s report and I take this opportunity to congratulate the teams, their managers, coaches and dedicated parents who won titles in the ACA competitions this year. Well done to: - Parnell Martin (6a) - Parnell Hills (7a) - Parnell Ferguson (8 Premier Shield) - Parnell Maroon (9/10 T20 Premier Championship) - Parnell White (9/10 T20 A Grade Championship) - Parnell Diamonds (U14 Girls Future Hearts) To be victorious in these ACA competitions whilst living and breathing our Mantra is what we are all about.

Our representative cricket programme has also been successful this year and the club has gone through all the fixtures unbeaten. Prior to Christmas we despatched Grafton 6:3 and then University 7:3 and then after Christmas we managed to beat Howick Pakuranga 5 ½ : 3 ½ and then we drew 4:4 with Cornwall. Cornwall and University are good benchmarks for us as they are huge clubs so to despatch University and then draw with Cornwall was very positive given in previous years we’ve had heavy defeats at their hands. My thanks go to Phil Lindberg for the work that he has done in coordinating these fixtures.

These good results in our representative season also resulted in many of our ‘Rep’ players being selected for the Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA) which is the step up from our inter club Rep programme. We accounted for approx. 37% of the selections for EDCA which shows us ahead of our ‘fair share’ of the mix when selected alongside the members of Grafton and University Cricket Clubs. Congratulations to these players who were selected at this level to represent their families and our club and to our coaches who coaches these EDCA teams. My thanks also go to James Dudson and Murray Davis for their representation of the Club as part of the EDCA committee. Thanks for your hard work and effort.

I would like to make mention of a few of our team who have been instrumental through the course of the season in making the season a success. Grade 1: Liz Hewes Grade 2: Jodi Libbey Grade 3: Janeen De Zoysa Grade 4: Andrew Kittle Grade 5: Jacqui Sinclair Grade 6: Nicky Hall Grade 7: Kate Wilson Grade 8: Victoria Wilkes 19. As volunteers, this team deal with a lot of ’traffic’ week in and week out ensuring that that we do our best to deliver our Mantra. I am very grateful to them all and look forward to working with them again next season.

In each of the grades there are Coaches and Managers who ensure that our teams run smoothly every weekend and who as parent volunteers actively give their time to the game and the club. I extend my thanks and appreciation to all of you and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible return to the club next season. I’d like to acknowledge Peter Speakman, Andrew Barker and our Chairman Craig Presland who have hung up their coaching boots this season at the end of Grade 8 having coached multiple teams at Parnell over the best part of a decade or more.

We are fortunate too to have a team of dedicated coaches led by Ian Trott. Our thanks go to Ian, Jonathan McInroy, Simon Herbst and to Roy Goodyear for the work that they have done with our teams in the middle, in the nets or in the TJC.

I am also fortunate to have on our Junior Committee some more experienced counsel in the form of James Dudson, Jon Tierney, Rick Osborne, Greg James and Dominic Drumm. Thank you to all of you for the support that you have given both me and the Club through the course of the season.

Lastly but by no means least I’d like to acknowledge Steve Hurdley who has again been completely instrumental in what has been a good season. Steve – you have done a great job again and we and I are very grateful.

Over Term 3 we are again running our Winter Programme over 8 weeks. I commend this programme to you as a great way of preparing for the upcoming season. Any time spent in the nets over the winter sets our players up for a more confident start to the season which often puts them ahead of players from both our club and other clubs who have not put that effort in. Whilst it is often tricky to think cricket when football, rugby or other codes are dominating the weekends, I would encourage you to do so and to make use of the TJC which remains a fantastic PCC facility.

As you will have read, we have recently appointed Phil Horne as our Director of Cricket. It is an exciting time to be involved with Parnell Cricket Club and I am confident that with Phil’s appointment we will drive harder towards our ambition to be the preferred / leading club in the Auckland region. Winter well and I look forward to hopefully seeing you all return for the coming season.

The contest was for the Crowe Morgan Cup which honours the memory of Martin, who just over a year ago, and the evergreen Ross. Martin, who did so much for NZ and Cornwall cricket, and Ross, a Life Member of Parnell and who played 20 Tests for NZ, were the pre-eminent schoolboy cricketers of their eras – Ross being selected for Auckland at just 16, Martin when a 17 year old. Highly appropriate that our youngsters today compete for a Cup that honours them.

JAMES DUDSON, our EDCA Rep., REPORTS: Personnel Changes The Director of Coaching role for EDCA has been held by Garry Wood for many years. During 2016 Garry took up a cricket development role with Auckland. On behalf of the EDCA committee and PCC, we thank Garry for his experience and knowledge that he bought to the role and his never ending patience. Ian West, who is the Head Coach at GUCC, stepped into the role in the interim during 2016 and was appointed permanently to the role at the start of 2017. Murray Davis who has been a PCC representative on the committee for 3 years also stepped down due other commits. On behalf of PCC, I would like to thank Murray for his contribution and especially his cricket knowledge, words of wisdom and skills at the committee table.

2016/17 District Tournament The trials and selections were held in 4th term of 2016 with teams announced at the capping ceremony in early December at the Terry Jarvis Centre. EDCA put forward two teams in each of the boys grades for the District Tournament and one for the Girls U15. It is the first time that years 10 and 11 have had two teams in the competition. This gave our players the best opportunity to play in the tournament. The criteria of team structure as requested by Auckland Cricket was two equal teams for years 7-10. Years 11 and 12/13 consisted of an A and a development team. The top placed team for each grade would contribute points towards the trophy, the Peter Badley Shield. The highest placing EDCA team placing in each grade were as follows:

U15 Girls 4th Year 7 3rd Year 8 1st Year 9 3rd Year 10 1st Year 11 1st Years 12/13 3rd Years 12/13 Dev. 1st

Unfortunately, we were a very close second to North Harbour overall. As it turned out, it was based on a few runs in one grade and the Y12/13 Development, who were unbeaten, were not counted in the calculation. Well done to all the players for the performance and the way in which they played the tournament. We will look forward regaining the title next year.

After the district tournaments Auckland played in the national tournament. The following players gained selection for Representative teams:

Auckland U19 Flynn McGregor-Sumpter and Will St John

Auckland U17 Sam Rainger (non travelling reserve) Auckand U15 Girls Lexy Bassett and Emma Irwin

Coaches PCC were well represented by our professional coaches with following coaches for each team. Well done to the coaches and a good reflection on the skills our coaches bring to District Cricket. The Coaches and their Clubs: Y7 Ketan Patel AUCC & Simon Herbst Parnell Y8 Nick Hendrie Grafton U. & Raj Dullabh - Y9 Tim McIntosh Parnell & Barrington Rowland - Y10 Ben Lewis AUCC & Ian West Grafton U. Y11A Dan Marsic AUCC & Y11B Jarryd Walsh Grafton U. Y12/13 Ian Trott Parnell & Y12/13 Dev. Simon Wood Parnell

The winter program is well into its planning and details of this will be sent to players in July.

26. THEY STARTED AS PARNELL JUNIORS

Our Junior Section dates from 1948. It grew rapidly and fielded 16 teams by 1958/59. Slumped to just 5 in 1970/71 but recovered marvellously to 23 in 1991/92 (Cricket World Cup) and, 5 years later a remarkable 58 – around the number today. Many top sportsmen and women have started their sporting lives at Parnell – notable cricketers are listed below but others include Sarah Ulmer (Olympic cyclist), Ali Williams (All Black), Cathryn Bristow & Bradley Heaven (professional golfers), Simon Towns & Jamie Smith (Black Sticks) and Rick Wells (Triathlete). A remarkable record – and just look at the cricketers who have come through our Junior ranks:

• Terry Jarvis (182) with GM Turner holds the NZ record for the highest 1st wkt Test partnership – 387 vs West Indies. • Mark Burgess captained NZ to its first ever win vs. England – Mark scored 5 Test centuries, 20 in 1st Class matches. • Trevor Franklin – successful Test opening bat (century at Lord’s) & was the first Auckland batsman to have scored 5000 1st Class runs including 12 centuries • Emily Drumm – captained NZ & is the all time top NZ batswoman with 2993 runs 48.27 average. • Emily Drumm, Ros Kember & Vic Lind – came up through the Parnell Junior grades competing weekly with boys as team mates. Even more notable, Emily gained selection, on merit, for EDCA Uner 14 Boys! • Tim McIntosh – Test opener, he scored 136 vs. West Indies in his 2nd Test and another since. Tim has now hit a record number of 1st Class centuries for Auckland – 17, surpassing Trevor Franklin’s record. He and Trevor Franklin are the only Auckland batsmen to have scored over 5000 runs for this province. • Peter McGregor played for every 1st Class province except Otago, John Carson played for Northern Districts as well as Auckland, Terry Jarvis and Tim McIntosh played for both Auckland and Canterbury and Ant Bullick for Otago. • Maddy Green – current Auckland and White Ferns representative. • Jimmy Neesham made a sensational century on debut for the Black Caps vs India followed up by another ton in his second Test – vs West Indies. He also plays ODIs and T20s for NZ. Jimmy made his 1st Class debut for Auckland but now plays for Otago. He also plays T20 in the IPL. • Lockie Ferguson made his ODI debut for the Black Caps is playing 1st Class cricket for Auckland – see earlier credits, he took 3 x 5 fors in 2015/16 and Auckland secured the Plunket. This season he was selected for the Black Caps in ODI • Mark Chapman – played for EDCA U18s having already represented Hong Kong in List A internationals from the age of 16. In 2015/16, he played for Hong Kong in the World T20 Cup and then made his 1st Class debut for the Auckland Aces. • Ben Horne – having come up through our Junior ranks, Auckland Age Group representation an NZ U19s, made his debut for Auckland this season. First in T20s, then One Day Ford Trophy games and, finally the . He immediately made his mark with the bat hitting 93 in his second game.

ADAPTIVE CRICKET DAY Very sadly the Adaptive Day had to be cancelled due to poor weather but is now scheduled for Wednesday, 22 November. .

GLENN McGRATH AT THE TERRY JARVIS CENTRE Late in the season Glenn McGrath, on behalf of Hancock Wine & Spirits, held bowling clinics in the TJC – first for Hancock’s retailers and then for PCC members. Wonderful to have one of the all time great bowlers visit us and happy to provide a few tips to our members. Our Premier opening bowlers were there in force and and Ganesh profited hugely picking up 6/57 the next day! Thanks Glenn for your most helpful and friendly sessions!

The Presenters: Tom Urry – MC, Craig Presland – Chairman, Rod Smith – President, Hamish McKay – Guest Speaker

Not since Orakei days have we had an Awards Dinner and the function held in the Terry Jarvis Centre on Friday, 8 April was, by all accounts, very well received. A great credit to Tom Urry and his Social Committee. Invitations were extended to all members from Grade 8s and older through to Presidents’ Grade and it was extremely pleasing to see so many teenagers, along with their parents and some grand parents among the 115 attending. MC for the evening was Tom Urry and the Guest Speaker was well known media identity Hamish McKay.

31. CEREMONIAL CAPS In addition to the main Awards, Ceremonial Caps were presented to Juniors who had played 100+ games. Just witness the joy on the faces of those who received such Caps though, later in the evening, this was brought into perspective when Tim McIntosh announced his retirement after no fewer than 31 seasons with Parnell, some countless 1000s of games!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A memorable evening with special thanks to the caterers, the Spit Roast Co., St Peters College (and Simon Wood) for the loan of chairs, tables etc., Tom Urry for the sound system, St Aidan’s Church for additional tables, Club Captain Pete and his team who manned the bar etc. and particularly Club Manager, Steve Hurdley and his wife, Liz, who put in a colossal amount of time and effort to ensure that the function took place and, after, restored the TJC to pristine condition.

FAREWELL TIM McINTOSH

After 31 seasons playing for Parnell, Tim announced his retirement from cricket. This to Premier team mates shortly before play on the final day of the season at Takapuna. Like another New Zealand Test opening bat, Terry Jarvis, Tim joined the Club at a very tender age and grew up representing Parnell, EDCA, Auckland and, eventually, New Zealand at every age group level.

Season after season, Tim has been our Premier XI’s anchor – totally dependable with the bat and without peer in the slips.

Auckland’s, too – Tim holds the record for most runs scored for the Province, the most centuries and the most catches by a fieldsman not a wicketkeeper.

For New Zealand, Tim hit two Test hundreds – 136 vs West Indies and 102 vs India – in 17 Tests.

For Parnell Premiers, Tim has scored over 9000 runs, 3rd in aggregate to Ross Morgan and Merv Wallace, and holds the Club record for a season of 1264 runs – set in 2015/16.

But stats don’t tell anything like the full story. Ever dependable, Tim has been a remarkable Club man – very supportive in all aspects. On the field, a superb mentor to his captain and, most particularly, to the younger team members.

This short tribute hardly touches on the contribution that Tim has made to the Club over his 31 seasons. But, whilst he has hung up his boots for the moment, we are sure that we will still see a great deal of Tim around the Club in seasons to come. Tim, we at Parnell wish you a wonderful retirement but remember that you will always be welcome to come back! 32. SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

MENS’ PREMIER GRADE Captain: David Goddard Coach: Ian Trott

Winner of the Allan Thompson Memorial Trophy – Runer-up in the Major Two Day Championship,

The Allan Thompson Memorial Trophy was the only piece of silverware secured this Season – disappointing indeed as our Prems had lead the Two Day Championship right through the season. Unbeaten until the final game, they had earned a 13 point buffer when entering the top 4 playoffs. The buffer dwindled till, on a dust bowl, we dropped our bundle in the final game vs. Takapuna and conceded the title to them.

Earlier in the season the Team was eliminated from both the Cup (One Dayers) and the T20 Championship. Not surprising – the season started in the most shaky fashion, beat Papatoetoe by just one run in the opening One Dayer. Next game was washed out then lost to Howick Pakuranga by 1 wicket. Thought provoking – Howick Pak, chasing our 50 over total of 193/9, ran us down after being 108/8, then 147/9 ….. !!

A breather – 2 Dayers to Christmas, back to 1 Dayers after the break. First up, a loss to EC Bays. Worse, next week at home North Shore skittled us for 86 – a loss by 6 wickets.

Next day, Sunday15 Jan., again at home – vs. Cornwall. Must have been something in the water drunk overnight – batting first we totaled 329/6 in our 50 overs. Mitch McCann, 58, and Jesse Simpson, 47, set the platform and Dave Goddard, 77 off 32 balls, and Lalit Bose, 85 off 42, put the Cornwall to the sword. The Cornwall attack included two overseas professionals – Barnard and de Villiers. Cornwall all out for 191 – an easy win which could have been even better as we had had them 126/8.

But a six wicket loss to Ellerslie followed and we failed to make the Quarter Finals. A roller coaster ride due to inconsistent batting – brittle at times/brilliant at others. The attack, too – consider the wides bowled by us in successive One Dayers, 18, 9, 16, 5, 20 and 25 – an extra 15.3 overs in just 6 games.

Lockie Ferguson was only available for just one T20 (he took 2 for 7 vs. Birkenhead) and the absences with the Auckland Aces of Mark Chapman and Ben Horne. Like Lockie, Mark and Ben performed admirably at the higher level and they show great promise for the future. When not required by NZ or the Aces, Lockie, Mark and Ben were often seen around the Club supporting their Clubmates.

33.

Tim announced his retirement at the conclusion of the season - after 31 seasons with the Club. Tim, you will be sorely missed but thank you for all your marvellous performances – 9,000 runs for the Club, 170 odd catches. On the credit side, you have mentored Ben Rainger and, also, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter so your retirement hasn’t left the cupboard totally bare.

Whilst the batting was too often brittle, Mitch McCann showed a great deal of class and Ben Rainger came of age. Both hit superb centuries and batted with admirable consistency. Ben fractured a finger fielding and missed some 8 weeks play – which may explain some of our batting woes mid season. Jesse Simpson came in late following injury and never really hit his straps and neither Tom Talbot nor Tom Hills scored the runs hoped for. On the credit side Skipper Dave Goddard had his best season ever with the bat though a century eluded him. Lalit Bose made his presence felt when he came into the side in the New Year. A powerful strokeplayer, Lalit played some very significant innings. To a lesser extent so did James Bevin. Josh Fisher came to us from EDCA U18s and AUCC and played several outstanding innings. At no. 8, Josh’s positivity got us through to several wins and his 123, off only 44 balls, vs Papatoetoe was extraordinary and certain to be an all time Club record.

Our attack missed Lockie’s pace but still performed credibly in the Two Dayers. Rav, for once not the top wicket taker, was still ever reliable and Ganesh bowled lively spells and took his first 6 for. Josh, no wickets in his first two games then made up lost ground in taking several 4 fors. Tom Hills started well but his form fell away later in the season. Not much opportunity for Billy Sanger, Karun Phorgat or Will St John but their time will come.

Our Skipper’s offies did not bring quite the success of the previous two seasons but this was offset by Mitch’s success – he was the top wicket taker with his . Jesse had moments with his orthodox left arm but his season was limited and he gave way to Hamish Robertson, a new arrival who had represented Otago A.

Schalk Conradie kept soundly in Ben’s absence – earlier, the Skipper, Tim and Ryan Turner took turns behind the stumps to hold the fort but Schalk was the right choice and he also strengthened the lower order batting. Overall, our fielding was sound and the great majority of catches, especially behind the wicket and in the slip cordon, were held. A point of difference between Parnell and other teams.

Huge thanks again to Jocelyn – and, thank goodness, no hint of retiring as Scorer! Ian Trott, our long-standing/long suffering Coach – yes, the REAL silverware will be captured in 2017/18! And to those who catered lunches and afternoon teas - Janine Ravlic, the purveyor of the Mrs Higgins’ cookies, and Amanda Goddard, Sue Talbot, Ann Chapman and Mariann Fisher. Thanks, too, to Phil Horne for assisting with fielding drills and, when we were short handed, in the kitchen – attending to D of C tasks ahead of time. Lastly to all our regular supporters – especially Paul Sylvia and Craig Speakman. Craig’s photos highlight so many outstanding performances through the season and add tremendously to the Club’s archival records.

35. MENS’ PREMIER RESERVE GRADE Captain: Tom Landrigan Coach: Roy Goodyear Unbeaten all Season – Mens’ Premier Reserve Minor Tier Champions Winner of both One Day an Two Day Championships

Skipper Tom Landrigan Coach Roy Goodyear

For the Reserves – hostile pace: 107 wickets at 10.44 between them – Karun Phorgat (39 wickets), Billy Sanger (30) and Will St John and Tom Urry (19 each)

COACH ROY GOODYEAR’S OVERVIEW: What a season!! • The Reserves won every game barring a draw in the two day game v Howick Pak. • Clichés abound but, “IT” was as a result of team that enjoyed themselves on and off the field • It was a team who worked together on and off the filed • It was a team in every sense of the word.

As “coach” I had the pleasure of working with this side from early December and through the second half of the season to the end. I put the word COACH in inverted comas, as this side lead themselves, as it should be.

THE SEASON: Thomas Landrigan did an outstanding job of captaining the side and, through encouraging on the field, gained leadership from the group; it became the perfect mix of “old heads” and aspiring Premier players.

Tom managed the process of continual movement of personnel in and out of the side via his input in selection process and through positive leadership.

36. Tom, your humour and leadership and of course your outstanding fielding will be missed in the coming season. Thank you for all you did for the Reserves and support of me during the season.

Tom was the only century (129) maker for the reserves during the season.

We had 23 players represent the side during the season. With a fairly consistent nucleus of players: namely Simon Wood, Ryan Turner, Billy Sanger, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter, Sam Varcoe, Razin Bharda, “Special” K Phogat and Henk Conradie. There were of course excellent contributions from those who moved up or down. William St John comes to mind only bowling 56 overs for the Reserves but collected 19 wickets at an average of 6.63!!

THE TEAM: Bowling: We were more than fortunate in having an all-round strong bowling attack. Our opening pairing of Billy Sanger and Karun Phogat lead the attack superbly and it was very difficult to get the ball out of their hands. They both, at times, put in long spells, bowling collectively 286 overs for the season, taking 69 wickets between them and averaging a miserly 11.36 runs per wicket.

Though it has been documented during the season, it well worth mentioning again; Billy Sanger collected 9 wickets in an innings. An amazing spell of at any level of cricket This went a long way in ensuring our seasons success. The back up bowlers were responsible for maintaining the pressure with our two off spinners, Henk Conradie and Razin Bharde combining well, taking 38 wickets between them.

Finally our back up seamers, Tom Urry and Will St John waded in with 38 wickets between them. From the above it is abundantly clear that our bowling attack was, by and large, just too strong for the opposition.

Batting: As mentioned above, our skipper was the only century maker. However there were many quality contributions from other members of the batting line up. Our opening combinations got us off to good starts; Sam Varcoe, Flynn McGregor- Sumpter along with Matt Vercoe-Curtis all allowing the side the comfort of building totals through not losing early wickets at both ends. Our middle order made up of the experienced Ryan Turner and Simon Wood who kept the ship steady and the momentum of the innings going as required. We had a number of occasions of “cometh the hour cometh the man” with the Conradie twins smashing attacks to all parts of the ground with run rates in excess of 100.

However, one of the most memorable moments was in the ‘one day” final against Howick Pak where we were 9 wickets down needing 10 to win. Our numbers 9 (Razin Bharde) and 11 batsmen (“Special K” Phogat) rose to the occasion with some well judged singles and finally a huge heave for 6 from “Special K” leaving our season intact and undefeated.

As was mentioned at the start of this report; what a season, and that 6 from K Phogat brought us to the end of “what a season”!

Fielding: Fielding always seems to play a secondary role in viewing a team’s success over the season!! Here again some good catching and a few timely run outs, proved the huge importance of this aspect of the game, another team effort!!

CONCLUSION: Congratulations to this team from us all at PCC, for the outstanding season which gained us promotion to the top level of Premier Reserve cricket in Auckland. Your contribution to the Club cannot be underestimated. We look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.

38. “THIRDS” - SENIOR B2B GRADE Captain: Peter Hickman Grade Champion – unbeaten entire season & winning both One & Two Day Competitions

Skipper Pete Hickman CAPTAIN PETER HICKMAN REPORTING: The Thirds set out this season with the goal of winning promotion, something that narrowly eluded us last season. With the main core of players remaining the same, we knew we had a chance, but none of us could have foreseen the season that was to unfold. An undefeated season, a grand total of 43 players came in an out of the team at various stages of the season. Normally such a huge turnover of players would be detrimental but, to their huge credit, almost all transients pulled their weight and some superb cameo performances were the result. None more than those of Lalit Bose – Lalit didn’t arrive from UK till early November but accepted his selection for the Thirds in the best possible way by hitting 74 and then 219 (113 balls). His partnership of 292 with Callum Douglas was outstanding. Lalit moved up the grades – not surprising! – and Callum returned to King’s College but they had set a benchmark for others to follow – and they did! Batting was where we excelled, we elected to bat first when the opportunity presented itself. Multiple batsman made serious runs this season, the best was Hayden Storey, our opener who was ever reliable at the top of the order. He was assisted by Charlie Caldwell, Sam Wilson, James Mulvey, Matt Vercoe-Curtis and Rowan Smith. All of whom scored more than 150 runs in the season. Tail end firepower was always available when the situation called for it, embodied by Luke O'Toole, who made the number 7 spot his own. Over the season, the team scored 3482 runs, averaging 249 runs per match. Six centuries were scored, plus Sam Wilson’s 99 – this has to be an all time record for a lower grade Parnell team! The Thirds always had the bowling attack to win matches, this season being no exception. The core attack, consisting of Pete Hickman, Elliot Jaffe, Gavin Poole and Hamish McLean caused havoc. Once Hamish McLean returned to university, new man to the Club, Rory O'Brien, claimed the spinner role and was ever consistent. Rudi Bisschoff joined the attack part way through the season and his experience and level head proved the undoing of many batting line-ups, one game bowling eight maidens in a row. Rowan Smith rolled the arm when needed, and proved to be a more than effective death bowler. Not much else needs to be said, the team functioned well as a unit all season, irrelevant of who was playing tha particular day. The batting award went to Hayden Storey and the bowling to Elliot Jaffe - well done both of you. We wish Hayden the best of luck back with his Surrey club, Ashtead, for whom he has recruited Lalit and has, as other team/club mates, Guy Harper and Paul Cohen. Guy and Paul both having had seasons here with Parnell. An undefeated season, bring on 2017/18!

[ EDITOR’S NOTE: Pete Hickman – a word about Pete, not only Skipper of the Thirds but also Club Captain. Pete did an exceptional job in both respects last season. Just 19 years old at the start of the season, he shouldered these responsibilities remarkably. Totally unselfish, three seasons back he hit a very competent 80 and could have had serious batting aspirations. But, finding he was blessed with batsmen galore, placed himself down the order to the extent that he only had 4 innings in 2015/16 and just 2 last season! Also, in accepting these duties, he has always put Club/Team ahead of his own ambitions. In 2015/16, Pete received the WJ Dinnison Cup for the Player Under 21 showing the most prowess, sportsmanship and club spirit. Pete, thank you for continuing to fully uphold these ideals! Further commendations: Lalit Bose, a ton at Lord’s for Harrow vs Eton and a 1st Class game for Durham University under his belt, arrived here to find himself in the Thirds. No problem – Lalit let his bat do the talking and he quickly found himself in the Prems. Hayden Storey – after captaining St John’s School’s 1st XI (8 wins from 11 games) and debuting for Ashtead 1sts in the Surrey Premier League, Hayden found himself in our Thirds. A very competent ‘keeper and most promising bat, he accepted his lot uncomplainingly and was a tower of strength to his Skipper and his Team. Tom Urry and Will St John – both Premier players who, by circumstance, found themselves in the Thirds – didn’t throw toys out of the cot, they buckled down and performed admirably for the Team. And there were others – all in all, a brilliant TEAM/CLUB SPIRIT was generated – well done Pete, well done all! ]

40. “FOURTHS” – ONE DAY 4A (to 31.12.16)/SENIOR C2 (from 1.1.17) Captain: Elliot Humphries Grade position – Senior C2 3rd

CAPTAIN ELLIOT HUMPHRIES REPORTING: Our 16.17 season was a classic cliché of a game of two halves, or in our case, a season of two halves. This encompassed the first half as a One Day side, way down in the 4A grade, where to be fair we were abysmal. It didn’t matter whether you were young or more experienced, you struggled. These grades are largely made up of “village teams”, groups of sub continental players, who get together once a week for the game they love, with some very wily old heads exposing any weaknesses the opposition shows. Over the last few seasons, we have had several prominent players from our Auckland 1st X1s, and others, play for us, and struggle. It classically shows that the top two inches must be engaged or you get plenty of time to reminisce back off the field. Ours is a makeup team, of players new to the club, young players, or a few old hands, playing to their ability and when succeeding, being promoted up to higher grades. Indeed, we had 9 players promoted during the season, one of whom played for the Reserves. Respect must also be shown to a few who were demoted to the Fourths, yet continued to play each week, fantastic attitude guys. Andy Hickman, Sam Hill, and Ashwin Haran, who were also still at school, were keen to play each week and became vital members of the team. Thanks guys. The second half of the season saw us placed in the Senior C2 Two Day grade, where we finished a creditable 4th, despite playing only 3 of the 5 games. The guys certainly appreciated this more structured format, hence the improved results. A plethora of dropped catches and misfields all too often prevented our bowlers pressing home advantages and their figures were frequently spoilt. More assiduous practice could have helped – and better attendances at practice sessions. Players were always welcome to join the Thirds and Reserves for fielding drills run by the pro. coaches.

For once we had an abundance of players – over abundance at times and difficult to manage. Practices were difficult – many wet evenings and the unsafe run-ups at the outdoor nets meant that the TJC was in constant use and full to overflowing. It is some seasons since we have had sufficient players to field a Fourth XI but it was marvellous to be able to give so many a game. Sadly, the Team Averages that follow are only partial – no ownership was taken of the scorebooks, posting of results or keeping the stats. But it was an enjoyable season, especially post Christmas. Well done Team – look forward to all being back for 2017/18.

42. ONE DAY 1A PARNELL FEARLESS XI Grade Position – 3rd Captain: Abhi Bhalla

SKIPPER ABHI REPORTING Best Batsmen: Yadvinder Singh Best Bowler: Ankit Dhokwal Team Player: Nitin Kumar

Our fourth year with Parnell Cricket and second in 1a Grade. We finished the season in 3rd place, a two place improvement on last season. In total, we won 10 games out of 19 with 5 losses and 3 abandoned games. All 10 games were won chasing targets which became a trend during the season, win toss and bowl. All and all this season belongs to our bowling unit which restricted the opposition to less than 180 most times. Highlight of season was when we batted first and bowled out for 136 and our bowling unit then getting us a win by dismissing Grafton Indo-Kiwi for just 116. Going into the final game of the season, we had a realistic chance to win the Grade with 2 other teams in the running. Unfortunately, before the start of game, we received news that Suburbs New Lynn got a bye and 3 points through Ellerslie pulling out. We still had chance if we won by a big margin but, in the end, we lost the game by 5wickets to Grafton United.

A satisfactory season and definitely a major stepping stone for going all out to win next season.

43. ONE DAY 1B PARNELL KINGS Captain: Chak Arunachalam Grade Position – 2nd

Its been a great season for Parnell Kings. We started off bit a edgy winning a nail biting thriller by 1 wicket and losing the next game by a margin. Next game was full of drama and a most disappointing loss. Kings had to pull up their socks and win all the remaining games to stand a chance to top the table. Brilliant performances by Sownder, Abrar, Arul and Roy ensured we won the next four games comfortably. We had great form in the past few games and were hoping for good weather and for one of the top two teams to be defeated. But that wasn't the case, the game was abandoned due to rain and Kings finished third in the points table.

After the much needed Christmas break, we continued our tremendous form to beat the opponents by over 100 runs. It was a shocker to lose the next game to the opponents who finished last in the first half of the season. Arul's massive performance with the bat helped Kings bounce back by winning the next two games. Brilliant performances by Sundar, Aaron, Vignesh and Sai ensured we won the next few games. Had been a great second half so far as we topped the table through out. Kings lost the next game but shared the top points with another team. But, on countback, missed out by a narrow margin on the run rate and Kings had to settle for the second spot.

Overall, Kings had a memorable 2016-2017 season. We played some quality cricket and learnt a lot in the process. Importantly, we all enjoyed the game and the time spent together.

Thanks Regards Chak Arunachalam

44. SUNDAY 1B T20 THE tenancy.co.nz PARNELL POUNDERS Captain: Chris Matthews Grade Champions

CAPTAIN CHRIS MATTEWS REPORTING The tenancy.co.nz Parnell Pounders were crowned the Auckland 1B champions after crushing the Auckland University Mothriders in this season’s final at Bloodworth Park. Parnell saved their best for last, scoring a resounding 114-run win on a day when rain threatened to spoil the party. But they wouldn’t be denied. After finishing top-of-the-table (with a five-win, one draw, one-loss record), Parnell created the perfect storm to get revenge over a side which had inflicted their only loss of 2017. The Pounders racked up a daunting 216-7 off their 20 overs, with Richard Kirk (45*), Jeremy Skinner (43*), Matt Dearing (34*), Chris Matthews (30*) and Chris Cairns (26) all smashing telling contributions to their season best total. In reply, Auckland University came out swinging but the loss of regular wickets meant the Pounders’ championship win quickly became a formality; the Mothriders bowled out for just 102 inside 15 overs. Jared Fraser-Hards was the pick of the bowlers with 2/17 but John Georgaros set the tone by picking up the big wicket of the opposition captain for a in the third over. Mohan Ball wrapped up the championship with a wicket and a run-out in the 15th and - what ended up being the - final over. With the win, Parnell will now play in the Twenty20 1A competition next season. “It was a great season and we would like to thank tenancy.co.nz for their support,” captain Steve Kirk said. “All the boys stepped up at different times throughout the summer and to cap it off like that was stupendous.” Kane Lindsey, who was absent for the final, was the standout player this season. In eight matches, he averaged 49.75 with the bat, reaching 30 not out on five occasions. His fast-aggressive bowling was also pivotal; his economy rate of 4.32 a team best. Richard Kirk led all run- scorers (200 runs) but it was perhaps the emergence of Simon Tye as a reliable top-order batsman that proved most crucial to Parnell’s success. Tye may have only averaged 18.14 with the bat but he played a number of critical hands, most memorably scoring an important 20* in a tight four-run win over Auckland University. Matthews led the wicket-takers with 14 but Fraser-Hards was the most consistent, averaging 17.3 for his 10 wickets and going at a respectable 6.65 runs per over. A number of players represented the Panthers throughout the season and former team member Thomas George Baloghy perhaps summed it up best by adding: “Congrats to the Parnell Pounders, a dashingly cavalier gaggle of willow wielders indeed! Yay you are the champions!” SEE PAGE 9 FOR TEAM PHOTO

A mixed season, weekly reports seldom reached your Editor and the normal end of season Report failed to materialise. However, Photographer Craig observed Presidential antics on odd occasions and, on the basis of a picture being worth a 1000 words, the following images will hopefully make up for a formal Report:

OTHER GAMES/EVENTS IN 2016/17

PCC PRESIDENTS vs CLIFTON CC, HAWKES BAY – October 2016 A party (believed to be the operative word) from Parnell journeyed to the Hawkes Bay for this pre-season game. All returned safely and little has been said abut the trip except that “it was very enjoyable” – no comment on the cricket.

PCC PRESSIES vs HONG KONG INVITATION XI – 23 December 2016 A game played in Christmas spirit and won by HK by a whisker. The HK XI was made up largely by members of the Mark Smith/Lamplough families. Your Editor also played for HK – only a gap of 40 years since turning out for HKCC – and scored an invaluable 2* before retiring. An excellent Christmas Dinner followed the game and it is hoped this will an annual event.

PCC COLTS vs WANGANUI COLLEGIATE SCHOOL - 17 & 18 January 2017 Arranged by Ian Trott with Barry Touzel, Wanganui’s Director of Sport, three games were played against the School at Shore Road. We fielded strong Colts teams and won the 1st, a 50 over game by 10 wickets. This due to some excellent bowling and then an unbroken partnership of 80 odd to win the game by Sam Wilson and Nathan Robinson. As the game finished early, a T20 was then played and, on the 2nd day, a 40 over game. Exciting cricket – both games went down to the wire and Wanganui came out victors in both. Our teams were captained by Callum Douglas (Day 1.) and Sam Wilson (Day 2.). Very enjoyable and we have an invitation to take two teams to Wanganui next January.

SENIORS’ PRIZEGIVING – 1 April 2017 Held following the Premier’s last day the evening was well attended by most of our Senior teams. One of the few occasions when the Two Day sides get to meet the One Day Social teams. Overseas players, Lalit Bose and Hayden Storey were farewelled and many thanks to Donna Trott for once again arranging the catering.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Club, and your Editor in particular, wish to thank all the contributors to this Annual Report, especially the providers of photographs. A number of the Team photos were taken by professionals – North Star Photography and Phototek with others from ESPNcricinfo and various websites and publications. Impossible to give accreditation to each individually but we are hugely grateful. Shona Regan, for those of the Junior Prizegivings and the Cornwall Field Day, and so many other parents of Juniors – thanks indeed for your photos! Last, but not least, Craig Speakman – some 80% of the photos are his. Craig attends most Premier games and his astonishing photographic efforts create a remarkable library season after season. Craig is also responsible for the Club’s statistical records – a resource available to few and the envy of many. Bryan Haggitt – Editor 54.

64. Hobson Park – 1951/66 – Grass Pitches, Practice & Match

Today we practice, inside and out, on the convenient all weather surface of astroturf whereas matches, for Premier and Premier Reserve grades, at least, are played on grass pitches. Not easy for batsmen to immediately adjust to on Saturdays hence the need for a grass practice block is now being debated. A grass practice block is being mooted for Shore Road and the viability and benefits are being explored. But first, a look at the past. Back in our Hobson Park days, all pitches were grass – practice and match – and prepared by unpaid volunteers. Hobson Park was on Dilworth Lease to Auckland Hockey who sub-let to Eastern Districts CA which included Parnell CC. And it was Parnell members who did the work. A contractor mowed the outfield weekly but all pitches were prepared by volunteers.

Parnell’s Jack Forsman rolling the eastern practice block Northern block c. 1961– Ray Emery bowling to your Editor, This was near where the entrance to Dilworth Junior stands today Terry Jarvis is in the middle net, Lee Stephenson, the far. being at the back of Omahu Rd. houses & just where Ray Emery lived This block backed onto the Croquet and Bowling clubs.

Senior practices were held after work, Tuesday and Thursday evenings just as they are today. And lower grades on Wednesdays including, up to Christmas, the EDCA squad of U14s taken by Peter Badley. Peter coached the U14s for 9 years, usually sole selector, and EDCA won the Auckland Primary School Tournament 8 of those 9 years – 1958/9 the exception. Back to the grass pitches – our volunteers, Jack Forsman, Peter Badley, John Ryan, Sam Sukias in particular and joined by Johnny Carson when schooling permitted, worked each evening readying play – mowing/rolling/marking – for play on: Saturday mornings for schoolboys 9 wickets Saturday afternoons for adults and secondary schoolboys 8 wickets Sunday afternoons for social (businesshouse) games 6 wickets

A colossal work load quite impossible to replicate in this day and age. Revenue from the Sunday games kept Parnell solvent – in fact all players paid weekly ground fees in those days. Question is – can we, again, provide a grass practice block for our up and coming generations?

Hobson Park c. 1961 – a typical Saturday Note the northern practice block bordering the Remuera Bowling Club. Remuera Tennis Club is on the right beyond the Nurses’ Home. Clubrooms are in the upper right corner – fibrelite, unlined, sheds with asphalt floor - leftovers from the US Military. Changing room, “Long Room” and a cafetaria. Six adult games in progress, two schoolboy games still to start.

Lachlan Hammond (“Lockie”) Ferguson

Lockie made his debut for New Zealand in 2016/17 playing for the “Black Caps” and has played seven ODIs dismissing David Warner in his first over on debut in Australia. Also one T20I. Clocked at 155 kph, Lockie is genuinely fast. He has progressed from Parnell’s junior ranks, through EDCA and Auckland rep. age groups, a time at Cornwall CC, then Parnell Premiers to Auckland Aces, New Zealand and Rising Pune Super Giants, finalists in the IPL. Lockie is pictured above bowling at Eden Park in the ODI vs. Australia. To date: 1st Class – 25 games, 89 wickets @ 24.61 bb 5/37; ODIs - 7 games 8 @ 50.87 bb 3/54; T20I – 1 game 3/37
