Tällaista kattavaa musiikkikentän kartoitusta tuolta ajalta ei ole aiemmin tehty. Olennainen tutkimuskysymys on sota-ajan aiheuttamien haasteiden kartoitus. Tutkimalla sotavuosien musiikkielämän ohjelmistopolitiikkaa ja vastaanottoa haetaan vastauksia siihen, miten sota-aika on heijastunut konserteissa ja niiden ohjelmistoissa ja miten merkitykselliseksi yleisö on elävän musiikkielämän kokenut. Tutkimuksen viitekehys on historiallinen. Aineisto on kerätty arkistotutkimuksen menetelmin ja useita eri lähteitä vertailemalla on pyritty mahdollisimman kattavaan kokonaisuuteen. Tutkittava -

Valse Triste, Op. 44, No. 1
Much of the Sibelius Violin Concerto’s beauty comes from its eccentricity — while it has elements of a traditional Romantic concerto, Sibelius constantly asks the musicians to play in quirky, counterintuitive ways, and often pits the soloist and orchestra against each other. BOB ANEMONE, NCS VIOLIN Valse triste, Op. 44, No. 1 JEAN SIBELIUS BORN December 8, 1865, in Hämeenlinna, Finland; died September 20, 1957, in Järvenpää, Finland PREMIERE Composed 1903; first performance December 2, 1903, in Helsinki, conducted by the composer OVERVIEW Though Sibelius is universally recognized as the Finnish master of the symphony, tone poem, and concerto, he also produced a large amount of music in the more intimate forms, including the scores for 11 plays — the music to accompany a 1926 production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest was his last orchestral work. Early in 1903, Sibelius composed the music to underscore six scenes of a play by his brother-in-law, Arvid Järnefelt, titled Kuolema (“Death”). Among the music was a piece accompanying the scene in which Paavali, the central character, is seen at the bedside of his dying mother. She tells him that she has dreamed of attending a ball. Paavali falls asleep, and Death enters to claim his victim. The mother mistakes Death for her deceased husband and dances away with him. Paavali awakes to find her dead. Sibelius gave little importance to this slight work, telling a biographer that “with all retouching [it] was finished in a week.” Two years later he arranged the music for solo piano and for chamber orchestra as Valse triste (“Sad Waltz”), and sold it outright to his publisher, Fazer & Westerlund, for a tiny fee. -

OSAKUNNAN HAUSKIN JOUKKO otsikoi Hämäläis-Osakunnan lehti Hälläpyörä osakunnan sekakuorosta kertovan jutun vuonna 1947. Otsikosta syntyi kiistaa jo tuolloin, eikä kriittinen historiantutkimus ole kyennyt osoittamaan, ettei muilla osakunnan kerhoilla olisi joskus ollut hauskempaakin. Yksi on kuitenkin varmaa: Hämäläis-Osakunnan Laulajien, Suomen vanhimman akateemisen sekakuoron, pitkän iän ja elinvoiman salaisuus on kuorotoiminnan hauskuus. SECOND CONCERT OF THE ELLIS COURSE MECHANICS HALL . WORCESTER Thirty-first Season, J9H-J9J2 MAX FIEDLER, Conductor frogramm* of % FIRST CONCERT WITH HISTORICAL AND DESCRIP- TIVE NOTES BY PHILIP HALE TUESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 28 AT 8.00 i COPYRIGHT, 1911, BY C. A. ELLIS PUBLISHED BY C. A. ELLIS, MANAGER : : Vladimir De Pachmann The Greatest Pianist Of the 20th Century ON TOUR IN THE UNITED STATES SEASON: 1911-1912 For generations the appearance of new stars on the musical firmament has been announced — then they came with a temporary glitter — soon to fade and to be forgotten. De Pachmann has outlived them all. With each return he won additional resplendence and to-day he is acknowl- edged by the truly artistic public to be the greatest exponent of the piano of the twentieth century. As Arthur Symons, the eminent British critic, says " Pachmann is the Verlaine or Whistler of the Pianoforte the greatest player of the piano now living." Pachmann, as before, uses the BALDWIN PIANO for the expression of his magic art, the instrument of which he himself says " .... It cries when I feel like crying, it sings joyfully when I feel like singing. It responds — like a human being — to every mood. I love the Baldwin Piano." Every lover of the highest type of piano music will, of course, go to hear Pachmann — to revel in the beauty of his music and to marvel at it. It is the beautiful tone quality, the voice which is music itself, and the wonderfully responsive action of the Baldwin Piano, by which Pachmann's miraculous hands reveal to you the thrill, the terror and the ecstasy of a beauty which you had never dreamed was hidden in sounds. -

Japanese Secular Pilgrimage Tourists in Finland Ikeuchi-Peltonen, Shizuka 2015 Kerava Laurea University of Applied Sciences Kerava Japanese Secular Pilgrimage Tourists in Finland Shizuka Ikeuchi-Peltonen Degree Programme in Tourism Bachelor’s Thesis 05, 2015 Laurea University of Applied Sciences Abstract Kerava Bachelor Degree Programme in Tourism Shizuka Ikeuchi-Peltonen Japanese Secular Pilgrimage Tourists in Finland Year 2015 Pages 51 The tour patterns of Japanese tourists coming to Finland are changing from traditionally col- lective ones towards more individualistic direction, because the tourists can obtain infor- mation themselves and decide the destinations themselves relating to their own interests thanks to digitalization and network. Some of them are enthusiastic to visit several places related to the specific cultural contents they are interested in, such as film, music, design, architecture and nature, in the form of “secular pilgrimage tour”. In the primary research, the task is to find an answer to the following question: “what kind of secular pilgrimages are made by Japanese tourists in Finland?” The research starts with quan- titative analyzing of the travel stories available on websites to find out some tour patterns. It shows the major places/attractions relating to the interests of the tourists. At the same time, it also shows minor destinations of niche demand. In the second part of the research, one-on-one interviews are conducted with four of the tourists who have made a secular pilgrimage tour and one tour coordinator in Finland. The data from these interviews add richer description to the result of the primary research, draw- ing clearer picture of the tourists’ true feelings and more characteristics to the primary anal- ysis of the destinations. -
