Signed: Alban Webb ABSTRACT The Second World War had radically changed the focus of the BBC's overseas operation from providing an imperial service in English only, to that of a global broadcaster speaking to the world in over forty different languages. The end of that conflict saw the BBC's External Services, as they became known, re-engineered for a world at peace, but it was not long before splits in the international community caused the postwar geopolitical landscape to shift, plunging the world into a cold war. At the British government's insistence a re-calibration of the External Services' broadcasting remit was undertaken, particularly in its broadcasts to Central and Eastern Europe, to adapt its output to this new and emerging world order. -

Guidelines to Making Programmes for BBC World Service Titles and Descriptions It’s not just the programmes that need to have a sense of excitement and the ability to create curiosity in our audience and potential audience. Whatever we publish - titles, billings, online descriptions etc (known as ‘metadata’) - have an effect on how your programme performs on the web. Programme titles and descriptions should always be written in a way that encourages the most people to listen to it, makes the programme topic clear, and ensures visibility and findability across the web - in podcast provider spaces (such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify etc.), search engine results (such as Google) and other tech, such as voice-activated systems (such as Alexa). We need to have titles and programme descriptions five weeks before the transmission date. This ensures that both Press and Publicity have time to adequately promote the programme, and that these descriptions are ready in time for our automated systems. It can be difficult to update programme descriptions at some of their publication sites if the information arrives too close to transmission. Titles Indicate immediately what the programme or podcast is about. • Use clear simple language – no puns. A Career at BBC Birmingham The BBC has approximately 350 staff who work at BBC Birmingham at The Mailbox and the Drama Village. Currently, The Asian Network is based in Birmingham as are parts of Radio 2, with programmes like Clare Teal, Paul Jones and the BBC Big Band. Part of Radio Drama is in Birmingham making The Archers and the new World War 1 series Home Front for Radio 4. BBC English Regions has its HQ in Birmingham and there are also the local regional services BBC Radio WM and TV’s Midlands Today. BBC Birmingham Drama, based at the Drama Village in Selly Oak, produces network TV drama including Doctors, Father Brown and WPC 56. In 2015, more roles are moving to Birmingham including the BBC Academy central HR teams, Internal Communications, Outreach and Corporate Responsibility and Workplace and Safety. A Digital Innovation Unit will also open in the city during 2015. By the end of the year there will be around 550 BBC staff in Birmingham. The Creative and Media Industries are one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK. If you want to work in the media in the future, it helps to understand how it works. Creative and Media is a big industry sector covering radio, TV, publishing, advertising and much more. Different sets of statistics include different occupations and the results can be confusing. The whole sector employs between a million and 2.5 million people across the UK depending on which criteria are used. The Government estimated that the Creative Industries accounted for 1.68 million jobs in 2012. -
