These units, comingjust months after the implementation of the MSU Alert System, were yet another effort to bulk up the university's emergency plan. According to MSU Police Chief Robert Putzke, safety and security measures on campus are routinely evalu ated and the EPS units are an outcome of this ongoing process. These stand-alone units are also solar-powered and rely on cellular technology, which eliminates the need for both trenching and cabling. The 10,000 seat capacity was tested as people from all across the state poured in to hear just what the future president of the United States had to say. Obama visited several other places in the state, but his most notable visit was his visit to Butte on the Fourth of July. Despite his visit, Obama was unable to gain Mon tana's three electoral votes. Pe1Hs Sweep Montana Election At the culmination of the 2008 election, the Democrats had quite a bit to smile about. Not only were the Democrats able to capture the White House when Barack Obama's 365 electoral votes beat John McCain's 173, but they were also abie to pick up a significant number of seats in Congress. The Democrats were able to gain seven seats in the Senate, bringing their total to 58 while the Republicans dropped to 41. In the House, the Democrats were able to win 21 additional seats, bringing their total to 257 while the Republicans fell back to 178. This trend in politics con tinued in Montana. The Future of the SOJ Jarn This year the fate of the SOB Barn also captured students' attention and headlines. ASMSU's Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) housed in the SOB Barn has a move in store. For many reasons, this year it was agreed that they would move to a new building constructed in a portion of the intramu:al field~ south west of Roskie Hall. The building will house a bike repair shop, a meeting room, utility area and both indoor and outdoor stor age areas. Funding for the new building came largely from Aux iliary Services, which will eventually move into the vacant SOB Barn, which has a $1 million maintenance back log. In exchange for Auxiliary Services paying for the new ORC building, ASMSU has agreed to let Auxiliary Services have control of the former Auto Repair Shop building, which they will then pass on t?. an other university deparonent, Facilities Services, once Auxiliary Services moves into the SOB Barn.
