It gives us great pleasure to invite you all to take a look at the 2019 edition of our e- Newsletter. The terror attack in Christchurch mosque and [email protected] Whakaari/White Island volcanic eruption had killed and injured many including [email protected] . We were also saddened by the fatal vehicle accident in Kaikoura involving a Malaysian family. We pray for the swift recovery of all those injured and may those who had passed be placed in higher ranks. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all the local frontline responders, and both the Malaysian and non-Malaysian community who had lent a helping hand and displayed generosity to the victims and their families following the tragedies. Although the High Commission undertook its best to extend consular assistance, the smooth process would not be possible without the tremendous support from all of you.

Looking forward to 2020, we hope that it will be a brighter and happier year for New Zealand and all of us . To the Malaysian diaspora living in New Zealand, friends of Malaysia, as well as dear readers, we would like to wish you all a New Year that is filled with love, peace, joy, prosperity and success.

NEWSLETTER 2019 Credentials Ceremony 2

As the High Commissioner is concurrently accredited to Samoa and the Cook Islands, H.E. Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo undertook an official visit to these two countries to present her credentials in 2019. This marked the renewal of a friendly bilateral relations between Malaysia and Samoa and the Cook Islands.

During the visit to Apia, Samoa on 27 August - 1 September 2019, the High Commissioner presented her credentials as the Malaysian High Commissioner to the Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II. She also made courtesy calls on the Samoan Prime Minister Hon. Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure Hon. Papaliitele Niko Lee Hang, and Minister of Commerce, Industry of Labour, Hon. Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell. The High Commissioner also visited the Samoa Association of Manufacturers and Exporters.

The High Commissioner presented her credentials to the Queen’s Representative in the Cook Islands, His Excellency Sir Tom Marsters, during her visit to Rarotonga, Cook Islands on 13 - 17 October 2019. She paid courtesy calls on Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Henry Puna and Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Mark Brown, and visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health and the Business, Trade and Investment Board.

In all the meetings with local government leaders and senior officials in both countries, the High Commissioner had discussed and explored way forward to expand collaboration in various sectors, covering trade, education, capacity building, aviation, maritime, healthcare and tourism.

Education remains an important element in Malaysia-New Zealand bilateral relations. There are currently 1,134 Malaysian students registered with Education Malaysia New Zealand.

The High Commission of Malaysia has worked closely with various Malaysian students’ associations on various programmes aimed at enhancing students well-being and promoting Malaysia at various campus and local community. This among others included the Meet and Greet, Cultural Festivals, Iftar and Quran Hour, Merdeka celebration and BERSATU Games.

The Director General of Public Service Malaysia, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Borhan bin Dolah and officials from the Public Service Department (PSD) undertook a visit to New Zealand on 14 - 21 August 2019. The delegation had dialogues with PSD-sponsored students in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington. The delegation also had meetings with Prof. Jennifer Dixon, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategic Engagement of University of Auckland, and Prof. Grant Guilford, Vice Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, to explore opportunities for future collaboration.

In an effort to promote Malaysia’s image abroad, the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington has worked very closely with the Malaysian community and various organizations in New Zealand to conduct/participate in the following events:  Presentations by Tourism Malaysia at the Travel Expo 2019 hosted by Flight Centre in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in February 2019.  Malaysia Roadshow and New Products Seminar by Tourism Malaysia on 11 April 2019.  High Commissioner hosted a brunch for women leaders of government sector and local NGOs to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019.  Supported Kilbirnie Mosque Open Day on 27 April 2019 in Wellington.  Engagement with the alumni of Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) in Samoa and the Cook Islands.

Maintaining connections with Malaysians and friends of Malaysia across New Zealand is one of the tasks pursued by the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington. In this vein, the High Commissioner and officials have participated in various events organized by the various Malaysian associations and local community-based organizations. In conjunction with the National Day and Malaysia Day 2019, the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington hosted a Merdeka Family Day for the Malaysian community on 14 September 2019 and a reception for local dignitaries, government officials and diplomatic corps on 23 September 2019.

The 2019 Merdeka celebration was special as the High Commission of Malaysia, with the support of a local NGO, Ekta NZ Inc., co-launched the ‘Malaysian Mowgli’ photography exhibition by a renowned photographer, Mr. Dallah Deen. The 10-day exhibition which showcased the story of Adik Syukur Khamis and his farm animals, gained positive response and encouraging comments from local visitors.

With a total of 11 members, consisting of lady officials, spouses of the High Commission’s officials and local Malaysian community, the Persatuan Wanita Kementerian Luar Negeri (PERWAKILAN) in Wellington had contributed actively in promoting understanding and friendships among the diplomatic corps and local community.

PERWAKILAN Wellington held its Annual General Meeting on 25 January 2019. In 2019, the ladies participated in the following events:  Chinese New Year Bazaar on 10 February 2019 at the TSB Arena, Wellington.  Food offering for Soup Kitchen on 19 June 2019.  ASEAN Ladies Circle (ALC) gathering hosted by the Philippines Embassy on 12 April 2019 at Karori Community Centre. 2019 was a challenging year for the High Commission as several Malaysians were impacted by the unfortunate incidents that happened in New Zealand. The terror attack in Christchurch mosques on 15 March 2019 caused the death of a Malaysian, and injured three others. A fatal car crash in Kaikoura on 6 December 2019 took the lives of four people in a family, leaving a single survivor of 11 year old. Also, there was a Malaysian injured in the Whakaari/White Island volcanic eruption on 9 December 2019.

While officials of the High Commission offered consular assistance to the victims and affected family members, the local Malaysian diaspora and community had come together to show the spirit of compassion, kindness and love. Their support and generosity certainly helped to lessen the burden of the affected victims’ family. A big THANK YOU to all involved.

Throughout the year, the Sports, Recreation and Welfare Club of the High Commission organised a number of activities away from office to strengthen the bonds among the staff, as well as encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Some of the activities include the following:

 One day hike of Tongariro Alpine Crossing — trekking across a remarkable volcanic landscape.  Hiking Mt. Kaukau in northern suburbs of Wellington.  Heritage steam train excursion to the Daffodil Festival in Carterton.

Apart from the above, the Club members also gathered occasionally to celebrate the birthdays of fellow colleagues, welcomed new addition to the team and bode farewell to those who were leaving. Visits were also made to those who were sick and gave birth to new-borns.

NEW REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER NEW ZEALAND EFFECTIVE FROM 1 OCTOBER 2019: NEW ZEALAND ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORITY (NZETA) AND INTERNATIONAL VISITOR CONSERVATION AND TOURISM LEVY (IVL) ______

With effect from 1 October 2019, international visitors and transit passengers from 60 visa waiver countries and 24 transit visa waiver countries (including Malaysian passport holders) are required to obtain the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) prior to travelling to New Zealand. The cost to apply for NZeTA is NZ$9 (via mobile app) and NZ$12 (via website) and each NZeTA is valid for up to two (2) years.

However, individuals who hold a valid visa for New Zealand (including a Permanent Resident Visa, or visa to work or study) do not need an NZeTA before they travel to New Zealand.

International visitors are also required to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZ$35. The payment of IVL would be charged for each application for NZeTA or visa. Visitors on transit need not pay IVL.
