Railsback's Some Fundamentals of Mineralogy and Geochemistry

The chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere VII: the O-bearing radicals Elemental contains Chemical eight electrons, two in its inner shell Mole % Name Electron-dot diagrams formula and six in its outer shell. However, 78.084 N2 that outer shell is most stable if it 20.948 Oxygen O contains eight electrons, a full outer 2 shell, and thus achieves the noble- 0.934 Ar gas configuration of neon. In O2, 0.004 - 4 vapor H2O each atom shares two electrons 0.0385 (385 ppm) CO2 with its mate, so that each has eight 0.001818 (18.18 ppm) Neon Ne outer-shell electrons, and a stable 0.000524 (5.24 ppm) Helium He is achieved. In water, an O atom shares two electrons with H 0.00017 (1.7 ppm) CH4 atoms, each of which likewise 0.000114 (1.14 ppm) Krypton Kr share an electron with the O atom, 0.00005 - 0.0010 Stratospheric O3 so that again the O atom has eight outer-shell electrons and a stable 0.000055 (0.55 ppm) H2 0.000033 (0.33 ppm) N O molecule is achieved. 2 That's not the case with the O- 0.0000050 - 0.0000200 CO bearing radicals HO2 and OH. In 0.0000087 (87 ppb) Xenon Xe each, an O atom shares electrons 0.0000010 - 0.0000500 O3 with one hydrogen atom, but in 0.0000005 - 0.0000020 NMHC C H each an O atom is left with just x y seven outer-shell electrons. That 0.0000000540 (540 ppt) CFC12 CF2Cl2 means that those O atoms have an 0.00000005 (500 ppt) OCS unpaired electron, which is an 0.0000000265 (265 ppt) CFC11 CFCl3 unstable and highly reactive 0.00000001 - 0.000001 H2O2 state. These radicals thus have short residence 0.00000001 - 0.0000001 CH2O 0.0000000098 (98 ppt) Carbon tetrachloride CCl times and react readily 4 with species able to 0.0000000065 (65 ppt) Methylchloroform CH3CCl3 surrender an electron 0.000000001 - 0.0001 Nitrogen oxides NOx (i.e., with the not-fully- oxidized species). 0.000000001 - 0.0000001 NH3 0.000000001 - 0.0000001 SO That has important 2 implications for atmos- Unpaired 0.000000001 - 0.00000001 Dimethyl sulfide CH3SCH3 pheric chemistry, as electrons 0.0000000001 - 0.00000003 Carbon disulfide CS2 we'll see in our next 0.0000000005 - 0.00000005 H2S page in this series. 0.0000000002 (2 ppt) Hydroperoxyl HO2 0.000000000005 (0.05 ppt) OH Sources: see Part I of this series.
