ince capturing its first national championship in 1972, the Hobart lacrosse program has Searned 27 invitations to postseason play. The Statesmen have turned those invites into an amaz- ing 16 national titles. Hobart’s championship collection started when Head Coach Jerry Schmidt led the Statesmen to the USILA College Division Championship with a 15- 12 win over Washington (Md.) College. That 1972 squad (right), which is celebrating its 25th anniver- sary, will be honored at halftime of this year’s April 14 game against Massachusetts. The NCAA began sponsoring college level la- crosse championships in 1974, with the Statesmen placing second in the first two before grabbing the golden ring in 1976 and again in 1977. The Division III Championship began in 1980. The Statesmen won the inaugural title with a 10-8 triumph over Cortland State. Hobart won 12 con- secutive Division III titles, including the 1991 cham- pionship. After a one-year hiatus, the Statesmen re- gained the throne in 1993 with a 16-10 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. 1972 USILA 1981 NCAA Division III 1989 NCAA Division III Hobart’s overall postseason record stands at an Collegiate Champion Champion Champion impressive 60-11 (.845).
