HILLSBOROUGH BEAUTIFICATION FOUNDATION VOL XXII • NUMBER 1 • SPRING 2020 HILLSBOROUGH BEAUTIFICATION FOUNDATION

A Walk Around Our Beautiful Town Spring blooms at Chateau and Provident Island

e have been thinking of you and hope you are well! As you know, Hillsborough WBeautification Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the beauty of our public landscapes and it has been wonderful to see so many neighbors and members of our community walking through our lovely town, taking the opportunity to enjoy the splendor of spring blossoms. While we adjust to this recent pause, we hope you enjoy a walk through some of our favorite HBF projects shown in the photos included in this newsletter.

We missed Celebrating May with you, but members of the Hillsborough Beautification Foundation Board of Trustees continue to meet remotely to plan future projects, organize the preservation of more than 145 completed projects, and determine how we can make a difference in our community.

HBF will continue to plan community-wide events for when we are able to spend time together in person, including our Veterans Day Celebration, Light Up the Town and Celebrate May 2021. HBF has been and will continue to be instrumental in upgrading the beauty and functionality of our Town’s public spaces. The tax-deductible donations received from you, our generous community, go directly to new projects and preserving our completed projects that you enjoy as you walk and bike through town.

Please share a photo of your favorite Hillsborough project as you walk through town and tag it #hillsboroughbeautificationfoundation or #hbf on Instagram.

We are so grateful for your ongoing commitment to HBF. We couldn’t accomplish all that we do without your generous support and the support of our fabulous volunteers! We will continue to care for our community with your help. Be well!

Enhancing the beauty of our public landscape, encouraging community engagement and civic pride

As you enjoy our town at a slower pace and notice anything that needs attention at an HBF site (.e. irrigation issue, downed branch) please report it to [email protected]. Signs are popping up on our projects in the coming months but in the meantime please visit our interactive map tinyurl.com/HBF interactive map to see a project in your neighborhood!

2 3 Harvest Garden Unfortunately, Harvest Garden has been closed temporarily as a result of the Coronavirus and we are unable to assist Call Primrose, a non-profit organization providing grocery assistance to low income families in San Mateo County, with the much needed and appreciated fresh produce as we have in prior years. As soon as the shelter in place order is lifted, we will follow the guidelines the state requires and start planting for Summer and Fall so we can again support Call Primrose. Under ordinary circumstances, HBF donates over 1000 pounds of produce from Harvest Garden to Call Primrose each year. Those who are able may wish to make a monetary donation directly to Call Primrose. Any donations should be made directly to Call Primrose either by check or through callprimrose.org.

HBF Gardening Tip As the weather gets warmer, and your lawn is getting cut more frequently, remember to cut your grass “high”. In combination with watering more deeply and less often, you will find the good roots will grow deeper and provide a natural defense against weeds. The longer grass deprives weeds of the sun they need to thrive. Garden centers are now back open. It is a good time to support a local business and get your hands dirty.
