he 5th Avenue Theatre first opened its doors in 1926. TThe Opening Day celebration drew a crowd of more than 50,000 people that newspapers described as the largest downtown gathering since Armistice Day at the conclusion of WWI. With its spectacular Chinese-inspired design and graceful proportions The 5th immediately established itself as the most beautiful jewel in the vibrant crown of Seattle’s bustling downtown theater scene, which at that time included dozens of playhouses. It was built to showcase that era’s most popular form of live musical theater— vaudeville. However, what no one at the time could have predicted was that just a few years later, motion pictures—especially those new “talkies”—would replace vaudeville at The 5th and at virtually every similar venue throughout America. For the next 50 years The 5th flourished as Seattle’s foremost movie palace. 24 5TH AVENUE MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY SUPPORTING THE 5TH SUPPORTING THE HERMAN SARKOWSKY: CUSTODIAN OF THE ARTS by BRIDGET SUMMERS, Public Relations & Communications Manager

This month, The 5th Avenue Theatre is celebrating the life of a great man—a pillar and patriarch of the Seattle community, a pioneer in Seattle sports, a philanthropist, and a patron of the arts: Herman Sarkowsky.

A smart and savvy real estate developer, some people will remember Herman for his cultivation of Seattle’s sports franchises. He co-founded the Seattle Seahawks, and acted as the Managing General Partner of our beloved home team from 1975 to 1982, remaining active with the team long after that. He was president and owner of the Portland Trailblazers basketball team. He was also a successful horse breeder and an early investor in Emerald Downs.

But what many do not realize about this local sports hero is that he was an avid fan of the arts, and a huge supporter of Seattle’s arts community. He was considered a regular by nearly every major arts organization in town, and was integral to the preservation of the arts—particularly when Downtown struggled through the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

Herman and Faye Sarkowsky were one of the amazing 43 local leaders to join forces to save The 5th Avenue Theatre from the wrecking ball in 1979. And since that time, they remained heavily involved in supporting The 5th. In fact, Faye became the first woman chairman of the board here at The 5th Avenue.

Through his leadership, his generosity, and his devotion to his city, Herman Sarkowsky shaped the artistic landscape of Seattle. Since the 1970s, through his patronage and philanthropy, he cultivated a true artistic ecosystem, one that is vital, thriving and very much alive, today thanks to him. Seattle lost a true icon when this great man passed away late last year. We hope you will join us in celebrating the life of one of our city’s leading citizens.

Thank you from a grateful community. Herman Sarkowsky and his wife Faye.

encoreartsseattle.com 27 YOUR MUSICAL NON-PROFIT THEATRE COMPANY WHY MUSICALS MATTER: NANCY HARRIS, 5TH AVENUE THEATRE HEAD USHER by KELLY ALLEN, PR & Communications Coordinator

“I feel like I will work here forever. When I die, I want my ashes to be placed somewhere in the theater."

Pick a show presented by The 5th Avenue Theatre since 1980 and chances are, Nancy Harris has seen it, give or take five or six. She has been at The 5th since Broadway royalty Ethel Merman and Helen Hayes turned out to launch the theater’s new future as a premier performance venue.

As the longest-serving usher in 5th Avenue history, she is a good judge of musicals. “Nowadays, I can really tell when a show is going to be good,” she said, adding that she knew Hairspray would be a hit. Key ingredients to a successful musical, according to Harris, are a good story line, beautiful voices, chemistry and a song you find yourself humming on your way home. “In Hairspray,” she said, “there were several.”

“I think musicals give the audience a good feeling,” Harris said. “Even if it’s not a happy show, it’s thrilling or it’s moving. And if it moves you to tears— whether happy or sad— that leaves the audience with a good feeling.”

On why she loves ushering at The 5th, she said “We get to watch the audience’s reaction and we also get a close-up look at the actor’s performance, which is equally interesting because we can see the interaction between the two.” Ultimately, Harris’s favorite part of ushering is to watch audiences react. “When they come out the doors, if they really like it, they just look so happy. I love it.” Read more about Nancy’s unforgettable experiences at www.5thavenue.org/blog
