Matilda the Musical 19 The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC) exists to celebrate the widest possible spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, Royal MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves. Royal MTC was Canada’s first English-language regional theatre. It was created in 1958, when two Winnipeg theatre companies merged under Artistic Director John Hirsch and General Manager Tom Hendry. Their goal was to produce great theatre with mass appeal. Royal MTC became a model for regional theatres throughout North America, and received a royal designation from Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. More than six decades since its founding, Royal MTC remains Manitoba’s flagship theatre. Every year, it produces ten plays on two stages, a regional tour of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario, a wide range of youth programming, and two annual festivals: the Master Playwright Festival (founded in 2001) and North America’s second-largest Fringe, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival (founded in 1988). Royal MTC also commissions, seeds, and develops new work, premiering an average of one new play each season. Attendance across all productions and activities averages 300,000 audience members per year.
The Citadel Theatre is proud to be a partner with Arts Club Theatre Company in presenting Matilda. We hope you enjoy this boisterous and uplifting musical. The Citadel Theatre is recognized and respected as a national centre of excellence in production, creative development, and audience engagement. For 53 years, it has been Edmonton’s artistic and cultural heart. In our 2019/20 Season, we will be producing and/or presenting 11 theatrical productions in addition to our House Series of concerts, cabarets and comedy. Our bustling complex of five performance spaces is also home to three other theatre companies: Rapid Fire Theatre, Catalyst Theatre and Theatre Yes.
