Known as the Tricky Triangle for its distinctive 2.5-mile triangular design track, Pocono Raceway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and ARCA Racing Series each year, as well as a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. The INDYCAR series also hosts an annual race at Pocono. Its location between the New York and Philadelphia metros makes the track strategically important for television and marketing for the racing leagues. Pocono is the only track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Circuit with three turns, three different radii and three variant degrees of banking, presenting a unique challenge to the world’s best drivers. The raceway in Long Pond in Monroe County held its first race on a three- quarter-mile track in 1968, its first 500-mile Indy Car race on a 2.5-mile track in 1971 and its first 500-mile NASCAR race on a 2.5-mile track in 1974. Among the NASCAR drivers to win at Pocono are Jeff Gordon (the record holder with six wins), Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and Jimmie Johnson. The raceway was started by the Mattioli family, which still owns it today. Over the years, the owners have spent millions of dollars and made numerous improvements at the track that have benefited drivers, m o c crews and fans. That includes a 150-slot . ns i

A ccess to major markets, ideal location draw investment to the Pocono By John Fuller ong known as a premier resort Mountains Region destination, the Pocono Mountains region has reinvented itself as a strategic location for a group of industry sectors that includes life sciences, advanced manufacturing and logistics. LThe four-county region, home to more than 330,000 people, is nestled in northeastern between the major markets of New York and Philadelphia. Its rolling mountain terrain, rivers and waterfalls, and access to nine state and two national parks coupled with a sophisticated economy has created the ideal environment for attracting entrepreneurs. The region – which includes Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties – is home to businesses ranging from software companies and traditional manufacturers to one of the nation’s largest continuously operated vaccine and pharmaceutical operations. Company executives are able to pick from well-developed business sites, enjoy excellent highway access and reliable utilities. Availability of a well-trained workforce, a favorable cost of living, and plentiful recreational and lifestyle amenities provide a recipe for success. The region is served by Interstates 84, 380, 80, 476, and I-81 is just minutes away. The region also has a general aviation airport and excellent rail access. , Philadelphia and Hartford are all less than three hours’ drive away. Pocono Mountains: Access to Major Markets “A major asset we enjoy is our proximity to the marketplace,” says Chuck Leonard, executive director of the Pocono Mountains Economic Development Corp. “We can reach a large concentration of the population easily and efficiently.” The region offers ready access to major East Coast ports, a distinct advantage for shipping worldwide. The proximity advantage is one of the major reasons for the dramatic gain in small manufacturers in the region in the past several years, Leonard says. “The available workforce is an additional benefit in the region,” Leonard says.

The region’s connection to film is also evidenced by a number of festivals staged there each year. The Black Bear Film Festival, which celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2014, takes place at the historic Milford Theatre in Pike County, and is considered one of Pennsylvania’s premier independent film festivals. The three-day event offers attendees the opportunity to screen a sampling of culturally diverse, independently produced films. The 2014 event drew more than 3,000 visitors. The Pocono Mountains Film Festival in Monroe County is a three-day event that takes place in the fall highlighting films that increase self-esteem and provide a vision of how to secure a viable socio-economic status.
