The Rector writes...... November has become our month of Remembrance and I wrote last month about the way our society has made remembrance and the creation of Memorials an important feature of our lives. I've always believed the churches have an important and indeed unique role in gathering people together to provide the setting and liturgy for remembrance. For the first time for a number of years Wentnor church will be hosting a "These we have loved" service on Sunday 1 November at 6.30pm - anyone is welcome to come along and remember someone, in the words of the prayer, “whom we love but see no longer “. The service won't be long and we can read out names if that's your wish? Otherwise, we’ll take the opportunity in the quiet of the church on a Sunday evening to step aside and remember with thanksgiving someone special to us. The church is made up of the living and the departed, the visible and the invisible church, and we believe the departed are still with us but on another shore and in a greater light. We miss them, but as Christians we believe we are all in Christ and we’ll never be separated from his love.

The Rector writes. ...A few weeks ago I went on a visit for the first time to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. It was an extraordinary experience - the scale is immense 150 acres enclosing vast numbers of trees and over 300 memorials. It's set to double in size over the next ten years as there's a long queue of regiments and organisations of all kinds wishing to add further memorials. The Memorials are of all kinds and clearly immense creativity and much thought has gone into their size, shape and symbolism. I found the area devoted to the WW2 Far Eastern campaign, incorporating sections of the Burma “Death Railway” and Sumatra Railway especially moving and I did like the Railway Industry Memorial with its carved black granite class 8 locomotive. The idea of a National Memorial Arboretum was conceived nearly forty years ago but it's in the past 15 years that its gathered momentum and appeal. The day I was there with the Onny Valley Social Club was very crowded with many hundreds of people present and the restaurant very busy all day! Inevitably for me, all kinds of theological issues arise as one thinks about why so many people would wish to visit such a place and how Memorials have an enhanced profile in our lives. It is associated with a change in our religious beliefs and identity, in my view, but we'll pass on that for now. Next month we have Remembrance Sunday which is now much better observed today than a few decades ago. Its good and important in our busy lives that we should pause for a moment and honour those who gave their lives for our well being - our future is after all, what they gave their lives for.

“Wentnor Parishes” Magazine Compiler needed! We need to have a Magazine Compiler from the “Wentnor Parishes” to replace the Rector who took the job over when he came in April 2000. The job entails preparing news material, listing services etc, each month and then sending it on to the Magazine Editor, Carol Morgan. This job is and actually has always has been done by a lay person, right across the Deanery, including at Churchstoke and Hyssington, and is not by an Incumbent, except among the “Wentnor Parishes”. We need someone in post by late January able to produce the March 2016 issue. If you know of someone who might be able and willing to do this job, please speak to the Rector. Its vital this job is done and it could be shared by a couple of people, and not necessarily by anyone closely linked to the churches.

Myndtown Church: Bishop’s Castle artist Tahira Paul painted a picture of Myndtown Church and donated it to be auctioned at the last fundraising event in aid of the church’s Roof Rescue Fund, The picture attracted much interest and Tahira consented to the creation of a limited edition of 100 high-quality prints, each individually signed by her, to be sold in aid of the Fund. They are now available at the price of £30 each, including UK post and packaging, with a mount and backing, to fit in a standard 16” x 12” frame. The following 19th Century letter has come to light. It hung framed in the Three Tuns' bar, Bishop’s Castle. A glowing testimonial and an obvious solution to a Rector's many problems

'A 27th March 1899 letter to Mr John Roberts, owner of Three Tuns, written by the Rev. William Glenn , then Rector of Wentnor, read-

'My dear Roberts, I hope you will not forget to send me some beer tomorrow (Tuesday) as I have not had a glass since I last saw you. Please send it good, as I shall have the Bishop and several clergy here on Monday week and you know there are no people in the world better judges of drink than they are. I want them to be able to exclaim as with one voice , after they have tasted your beer' Roberts deserves well of his country as he is the only man who has discovered a Cure For Agricultural Depression. Yours truly ,W.Glenn.His son Rev W.E. Glenn was Rector of Mainstone for about 40 years.

The Rector adds ..”My grateful thanks for all that everyone did to make the Wentnor Fete such a success this year! It was a wonderful community day which gives good support to the churches and the village hall at Norbury.”

Our condolences to the Mellor family of Myndtown on their recent bereavement. Here are some of the “Memories of Margery” which were read out at her funeral by an old friend Ann Wilson. “Margery James was the daughter of Jack and Nora James, from whom she inherited her strong moral compass and her compassionate loving nature. Growing up during the Second World War, she remembered sheltering during air raids and rationing, and raised money at school so the navy could build more ships. She remembered giggling on the roadside as the British soldiers and – she admitted – the more intriguing American GIs marched though Rugeley on their way to manoeuvres on Cannock Chase. She was diligent at school and qualified as a young girl as a dispensing chemist. Margery took up her first job in Boots the Chemists in Rugeley. She married Luke Mellor, a farmer, in 1957, moving into Little Hey, the house they built on land at Manor Farm, Colton. Here her three children Joanna, Matthew and Simon began their lives. Margery’s life was to change, so cruelly, in 1968, when her husband Luke died.. A widow at just 35 years old, with three young children, she simply devoted her life to their care and upbringing. Margery was a loyal friend to many and always there for her extended family

Margery was a creative person, whether in the kitchen, at the sewing machine or latterly in her workshop. Jo remembers so well her attention to detail when making dresses. Margery was a home-maker for her children, becoming in the process a much-loved mother-in-law to John, Sally and Paula. She would help, without interfering, and was a true friend to her extended family, always celebrating family values She was an avid baker, making cakes for birthdays and Christmas.

Margery was a passionate gardener, nurturing plants with the same instinctive abilities that she applied to her family. She had an encyclopaedic knowledge of plants and was a perfectionist, never quite being happy with the position of a particular shrub or tree, always wanting something moved, lopping , pruning or culled. She loved to encourage the birds, and hated the intervention of cats. Quite recently she resorted to the use of a very realistic life size model of a boa constrictor to deter her feline adversaries. To this day there are cats in that will not go near a hose pipe, let alone a snake, so effective was her ultimate deterrent.

She was a wonderful Grandma more often than not the life and soul of family gatherings, loving to hold court with her jokes and her anecdotes. Sometimes we heard her stories more than once, but it mattered not as the joy was rarely in the punch line but more often in the way she told them. Margery rarely lectured, but set an example through her actions. Her legacy is her family, who will always strive hard to maintain the standards she set, to be generous to others, to give willingly and to do so with a smile. In later years she lived in Church Stretton and would come over to be with her family at Myndtown Church for Harvest and Carol services.”

The Rector writes.... A couple of months ago I paid a short visit to Wells in Somerset. I'd realised that it was 50 years ago since I'd left school and sixty since I'd started at the Cathedral school as a boarder at the tender age of nine! Life as a boarder in those days is inconceivable today with the only contact with home being a weekly exchange of letters! I'm positive though about my school days and it was intriguing to return for a visit. After all this time I wasn't too surprised so much had changed but it was nearly everything - in the school only the location of the Art department was the same and, of course, in the town the railway had gone, and there were supermarkets, even a Waitrose! The Cathedral continued to look magnificent. Many people think our Christian faith is unchanging and find that reassuring. In one sense that's true especially where core beliefs about God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are concerned but there's remarkable adaptation in the way we practise our faith over time. Over the past 50 years we've seen great change in worship, liturgy, the role of women, we're now having women bishops, facilities in many churches and so on - such changes enable the Church to move forward, though often too slowly. But we're also being encouraged by the Holy Spirit to appreciate that God is often ahead of us out there in his world showing that we need to continue to be more tolerant, more inclusive and more appreciative of diversity - old ones among us might think life was better in the past, but I'd like to think many social changes of recent years have certainly made sections of society far happier.

The End of Christianity 2067 “It’s often said that Britain’s church congregations are shrinking, but that doesn’t come close to expressing the scale of the disaster now facing Christianity in this country. Every ten years the census spells out the situation in detail: between 2001 and 2011 the number of Christians born in Britain fell by 5.3 million — about 10,000 a week. If that rate of decline continues, the mission of St Augustine to the English, together with that of the Irish saints to the Scots, will come to an end in 2067.” The rest of this article from a Spectator can be found on the Diocesan Website Noticeboard. Sobering reading – that’s why prayer and mission are important.

The Rector writes...... Congratulations to all those associated with bringing into being the New Village Hall at Norbury, the largest building project in the four parishes of Ratlinghope Wentnor, Norbury and Myndtown for 800 years, that is since the building of the local churches in the 12th and 13th centuries! It's been a good team effort and our particular thanks go to the Steering Committee of Norbury Village Hall who pushed forward the New Hall Project over ten years, ever since the Combined Myndtown Parish Council kindly organised a Parish Plan for the households which clearly identified a desire for a new Village Hall. Our old Hall- originally a Norbury church initiative - had done a brilliant job for over 50 years but as an 1880s building already "retired" in 1950 at ", it was pretty worn out, especially its electrics. Luckily, we'd purchased the field a few years before by public subscription - a vital £6000 - so we had the space for a new hall. Three lottery applications with the third being the lucky one and we were able to turn dreams into reality. Our thanks to the builders - Brown's - who kept to budget and to time once power lines were eventually shifted. The first big event just three days after taking over the new hall - Friday night at Norbury Palladium - for 140 people raising £1500 for Myndtown church roof appeal - showed the potential of the new hall. We do have a few more jobs to do and we'll need to find resources to fund them but the new hall is here at last for the community, for young and old to use for the benefit of everyone. As Chairman of the Village Hall, I hope it will well used and enjoyed by all from now on!

ONNYCAMLAD PARISHES Rev. Prebendary Norman Morris, Rector of Wentnor with Ratlinghope, Norbury, Myndtown, Lydham, More & Snead, & Priest in charge of Churchstoke & Hyssington & Rural Dean 01588 650244 Rev. Carol Whittock Mission Priest at Churchstoke 01588 620693 David Jelves, Reader 01588 620434 Mette Wardle, Reader 01694 751466

The Rector writes....Will our churches always be with us? Our group of nine parishes stretch from Ratlinghope in the east to Churchstoke in the west, a distance of over twenty miles. The communities around them are small, very small, apart from Churchstoke which has 1300 parishioners, our eight other churches have only 900 people to support them. The maths is pretty simple - about 110 adults supporting a country church! As I understand it, only Jerusalem has a similar equation with 100 Christian worshippers per church! It’s not a large pool of people to draw support from, you'll agree! We have just had our annual church meetings - nine of them - like any charity we have to have constitutions, a committee- the PCC - all volunteers- officers such as two churchwardens, secretary, treasurer - accounts etc as we try to pay our way and balance the books - for example, nearly every home will have buildings insurance - yet even our country churches are bigger than most homes and there's s not much change from £1000 per annum for insurance per church! Bigger ones are two or three times more! All this has to be paid for all, so it’s to the great credit of the PCCs and parishes that, amazingly, with all the demands, we still keep going, witnessing to the Christian faith and providing ministry of all kinds to local communities. It's gone on for hundreds of years so won't it just go on forever? I'm afraid nothing is guaranteed - one of our very small churches will cease to be a parish church in twelve months time - it's future uncertain - other churches could well be following suit - they need friends and they need some younger friends who will come forward to offer help - it may be practical, it may be financial- it need not be too costly - maybe the price of a weekly coffee and cake - £2.50p direct debit per week adds up to £10 per month - in a year, with tax gift aid, your country church would receive over £150 from you! Seven or eight new friends doing that per church would pay the insurance! It's all very practical I know - Christian stewardship motivates some people already, but also there will be many others who might just like to support the church as a social institution which is a benefit to the community, and uniquely embodies the history and traditions of the villages we live in! Be in touch with me or a Churchwarden if you would like to be a good friend of one of our churches!

Bishop's Castle Community Hospital - proposed community ultra sound service. Sister Sandra Bradbury after 31 years service retires this week as the Hospital's ward manager. To a gathering of Friends of Shropshire Community Hospitals Sister Bradbury spoke of how additional care and diagnostic services could be offered from B.C. hospital which following its refurbishment has the necessary room. In June 2010 Sister Bradbury, the local GPs and the Hospital's Equipment Fund trustees talked to the then Shropshire P.C.T Area manager about introducing a community ultrasound service at B.C. hospital. Primary Care in the Royal Shrewsbury are keen to see the service introduced and can help in finding the necessary specialist staff. The local G.P.s. are keen. The Hospital's Equipment Fund has offered to purchase or lease the necessary unit. These facts have been pointed out to Shropshire Community Health Trust's Chief Executive. The Trust have to give their approval to the unit being located in B.C.Hospital. Shrop. Com have not been asked for funding or specialist staff. To date their approval to this worthwhile diagnostic clinic being located in B.C. hospital has not been granted. What a pleasant leaving present to both Sister Bradbury and to the people of rural south west Shrophire if this worthwhile diagnostic clinic was set up in Bishop's Castle Hospital.'

Vera Rippon: Stan Morgan whose family had long associations with Snead Church recently interred his late sister Vera’s ashes in Snead Churchyard. The family has prepared the following tribute to her. “Vera was born in 1922 at Kerry in Montgomeryshire, Wales, the second daughter of Eddie & Elsie Morgan. On returning from service in the army during WW1 Eddie followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a farmer. She had an older sister Joyce and was later joined by Stan, Glenys and Roy. In 1940 the family moved to Snead Mill where Eddie became the corn miller, milling grain for local farmers.

Vera attended school in Bishop's Castle. A two mile bike ride every day. On leaving school she became a telephone operator at the telephone exchange in Church Stretton. At a dance in Church Stretton she met Phillip Rippon, who was an RAF officer flying Spitfires from RAF Shawbury. In time, Phil flew his spitfire over Snead Mill waggling his wings in greeting flying low down in circles Whilst they were courting Vera won the title of "Miss Church Stretton" at a dance. This win entitled her to enter the”Miss Shropshire" competition, along with about 50 competitors from other towns in the county. The final was held in Shrewsbury. Vera come second in this competition and shortly afterwards she won Phil's heart and they became engaged. They were married in Bishop's Castle church and had a reception at the Castle Hotel. At this time Phil had a fantastic motorcycle an Excelsior Manxman which he used to visit Vera. After he left the RAF he changed this for an open top MORGAN 3 wheelcar which had an exposed matchless V twin engine on the front and a chain rive to the rear wheel. A few years later he was offered and accepted a job in Chingola, South Africa, as a chemist in a copper mine They were blessed with 3 children, Christopher, and twins Michele and Diane. Sadly Vera was left on her own after Phil's tragic death in a gliding accident, but she decided to stay in the warmth of South Africa for the rest of her life, moving to Pietermaritzburg in Natal”.

The Rector writes... Happy Easter to everyone! It's the Festival of Festivals when we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ! We have moved through the long period of Lent - commemorating the famous 40 days and 40 nights Jesus spent in the Wilderness - and we'll soon move into Holy Week which takes us through the final week of Jesus' earthy life before God's Shock and Awe - Easter Sunday - when the greatest miracle of all happened and Jesus rose from the dead! The disciples, despite some teaching from Jesus about what to expect, had fled from the Cross, unlike the braver women disciples who stood their ground at the Cross. But now he was to be among them once again - restored to life, though as the accounts tell us, on a different plane of life, one that touched heaven as well as earth. We owe it to Peter and Paul and the Holy Spirit to draw out the message that Jesus, in Paul's words, was the first fruits and we share his Resurrection as baptised believers in him. It's astonishing from that Easter morning when Mary Magdelene encountered the Risen Christ the followers of Jesus grew, not without challenges, to take on and overcome the Roman Empire and its 400 years of Roman Gods who allegedly had brought the Empire success! In our small way perhaps we should have more confidence in what God has planned for us as disciples of the Risen Lord

Good Friday April 3rd at 3pm in Lydham Church A Performance of the Quartet by Joseph Haydn: “The Seven Last Words of Christ”

Haydn was commissioned in 1783 to write a piece for the Good Friday service to be held in the Holy Cave Oratory in Cadiz. This intensely emotive work illustrates through music the last sentences uttered by Christ on the cross, and each of the movements are preceded by readings from the Gospels relating to these words. Haydn presents us with seven slow movements, framed by a short introduction and a final presto section, that demonstrate his genius and originality in every aspect. The work will be performed by the members of the local Giardino Quartet, with the Gospel extracts read by Oliver Goode. The performance will take place on Good Friday April 3rd at 3pm, lasting one hour, at Lydham Church. Donations will be welcome for the church and for Cancer Research UK. Further information from Caroline Babb 650443

AROUND THE PARISHES: NEWS UPDATES: THE VILLAGE HALL AT NORBURY: Important information for everyone:- As the new hall progresses, it is time to say goodbye and thank you to the Old Hall as it will be moving to its new home at Walcott Hall (do you think it's going up in the world?) during the middle of April.

A special “Spuds & Puds” Goodbye Event is planned for 11th April from 5pm to 9pm and we do hope you can come to give it a good last party! A flyer will be coming round soon with more details. Here are a couple of things that we would like you to do to help make it a great send off.

THE MEMORY WALL

Do you have memories of the old hall, or photographs of events there? As part of our goodbye event we are building a memory wall of what you can remember about special events at the hall over the years. Perhaps you had a special birthday party, or wedding reception there, what about funny stories or things that went spectacularly and hilariously wrong? Any memory at all we want to help you to bring it to life so that you can help to build the Hall's special story and keep it in a special place in the new Hall.

Please bring any photos or stories to us at the hall either on Fri 10th or Sat 11th April between 11am and 3pm when someone will be there to receive it. We'd prefer not to display any precious originals on the night, so please provide photocopies or printouts for us to pin up on the wall. You can always contact us by phone: Emma Jones (650589) or Oliver Goode (0779 5836580) if you want to discuss any idea you may have.

There will be prizes for the pictures and stories that make us laugh or cry the most!

OUR NEW WEBSITE Have you visited the new website? It's well worth a look, the logo is based on some great work by children from Norbury School and the site will be the way to keep in touch with all the things that will be going on at the New Hall. Please visit www.villagehallnorbury.co.uk , enter your email address to subscribe to future newsletters and email us on [email protected] to let us know that you are up for the party on April 11th.

LYDHAM VILLAGE DEFIBRILATOR: By the time you read this Lydham will have a defibrillator ready for use. Discussions led to two village ladies Shirley Rowson and Jane Semple commencing fund raising for this project. Thanks to enthusiastic support for a bingo night at the Inn on the Green and a quiz night at the village hall, backed by generous support from other local business sponsors the funds have been raised. Quite a number of village people attended the training session and are now knowledgeable about how to use it.. All these people are now on the list which is used by the ambulance service to bring someone quickly forward when an emergency occurs. It is a sad fact of life that we are quite a long way from the accident and emergency hospital and the defibrillator might be the tool which helps to maintain someone’s life. The support for this project has been quite extraordinary and surplus funds have been generated. It has been agreed that the fund raising will continue in order to provide the village hall with a hearing loop which also doubles as a public address system. This will enable people who are hard of hearing to enjoy events in the hall more fully.

The Rector writes... ..March is a month when winter begins to pass and we can start to look forward the spring! Easter is early this year so we will soon we midway through Lent and so can relax and enjoy Refreshment Sunday Lent 4 better known s Mothering Sunday! Like American grey squirrels pushing out native red ones, regretfully we now have to refer to Mother's Day - American influence! Be that as it may, we're reminded to acknowledge the church as our Mother and on this special day remember with thanksgiving our Mothers and the care and love they gave or still give to us! I suspect we underestimate the importance of nurturing in our early lives and you do wonder at what went wrong with the growing up of certain elements in our world who eventually become fanatics and extremists bent on destruction - the role of Mary the mother of Jesus has an honoured role in scripture and you could say even more so in most Christian traditions - long may this be the case as it helps us appreciate that the love of God should be a model of the very best a loving Mother and Father can give to their children. All are welcome to our Mothering Sunday services.

EULOGY FOR MARY BENSTED-SMITH (1925-2015) (edited) Mary was born Ruth Mary Hanbury-Sparrow in Church Stretton in 1925. Mary’s father, Alan, was already a professional soldier when the 1st World War broke out. Having survived two earlier wounds, he was finally being invalided out after being gassed at Passchendaele in 1917. He was highly decorated. Mary was proud of his courage, resilience and sense of duty. Those qualities rubbed off on her, as did the quiet courage and self- reliance of her mother, Ileen, who raised six children and during World War Two took in soldiers, who had been blinded. Her childhood in the family home, backing onto the Longmynd, gave her and her brothers and sisters a chance to develop a sense of self-reliance as well as a love of the countryside and animals. Mary was fourteen when the Second World War broke out and still just nineteen when the war in Europe ended. She enlisted as a Wren, aged 17, and served at Bletchley and then later at Eastcote. In the Wrens, Mary made several lifelong friends In 1949 Bill Bensted-Smith, who was a Sapper, happened to come across a Sapper friend, Martin Keer, who was arranging a party to go to a London rugger club's annual ball. The friend said he was "short of a man", and proceeded to persuade Bill to join them - with Mary as a "blind date". The result was a bit more than Martin had expected, because within a year Mary and Bill were married – a marriage that lasted for over 64 years.

During the first few years of their marriage, the family travelled, starting with three years in Singapore, where Rosanna was born, but in 1955 Bill left the army and the family moved to Plaxtol, Kent.

Mary was an instinctively sympathetic horsewoman and passed her enthusiasm on to her children, She led by example, competing with her children in riding events - and delighting in beating them too! She was also remarkably brave, especially enduring and recovering from a broken neck. To fund her horse riding, Mary worked part time for the Milk Marketing Board as a milk recorder. In the early mornings, she could be seen setting out on her bright red moped around the lanes of Kent, wearing her bright red jacket, helmet and gloves, and with a bright red box on the back. She loved the involvement with the farming community. In 1991, when Bill retired. they moved back to Shropshire. The move coincided with another huge personal challenge: acute myeloid leukaemia. With the help of friends, Mary set about beating cancer. Against all odds, she succeeded and afterwards used to visit cancer patients in the hospital.

Mary’s time in Wentnor with Bill and Rosanna was full of joy in many ways She loved her home and garden , her growing family, the people of this area, both old friends and new. She loved the familiar landscape and the rural way of life, always with her dogs and horses.

In the last couple of years, Mary faded but never complained, looked after by Rosanna and taking comfort in the constant company of Alfie, her loyal retriever. In the messages received, friends have called her a trooper, a force of nature and an inspiration. She was all these and more.

Family Tribute to Edith Winifred Betton known as Ada 93 years of age. Born to Richard and Ada Carter at Kinnerton Green on 13th August 1921 She had two sisters Kath and Rene, she went to the Bog School and often talked about how they all played cowboys and indians in the mines, she left school at the age 13. Her first job was at St Chads Vicarage in Shrewsbury where she lived in, and worked as a cleaner. One of her memories was having to polish over 100 steps with cardinal polish. Later she was offered work as a cook at Halton-Harrops Gatten Lodge. This is the time when she met her future husband Jack Betton. She often recalled a night when she walked back to Gatten Lodge and the skies lit up, it was the Germans bombing the . During the war she was a land girl. On the 7th August 1944 Ada married Jack Betton at Wentnor Church. They started their married life together at Belmore. Their son Roly was born in 1946. They continued to live at Belmore until 1967 when they moved to the Handless Farm at , where they continued to farm. In 1972 their first grandchild was born Edward was followed by their grandaughter Michelle in 1974. Ada was very family orientated, her family meant the world to her. She enjoyed nothing more than feeding them all. She was a brilliant cook. In 1989 the family moved to the Brambles Woolston where her son Roly continues to farm. Her husband sadly passed away in 1998 and is buried at Ratlinghope. The family continued to grow with many great grandchildren each giving her pleasure every time she saw them. In 2001 Ada started to receive home care which enabled her to stay in her own home as she wished for the remainder of her life time. Roly would like to thank his wife Tina for her support during this time. Ada loved the Royal Family, and Christmas dinner always had to be eaten in time for the Queens Speech
