Kangas University of Florida The year 2007 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of Marvin Harris (1927–2001). Although relations between Harris’ cultural materialism and Skinner’s radical behaviorism have been promulgated by several in the behavior-analytic community (e.g., Glenn, 1988; Malagodi & Jackson, 1989; Vargas, 1985), Harris himself never published an exclusive and comprehensive work on the relations between the two epistemologies. However, on May 23rd, 1986, he gave an invited address on this topic at the 12th annual conference of the Association for Behavior Analysis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, entitled Cultural Materialism and Behavior Analysis: Common Problems and Radical Solutions. What follows is the publication of a transcribed audio recording of the invited address that Harris gave to Sigrid Glenn shortly after the conference. The identity of the scribe is unknown, but it has been printed as it was written, with the addendum of embedded references where appropriate. It is offered both as what should prove to be a useful asset for the students of behavior who are interested in the studyofcultural contingencies, practices, and epistemologies, and in commemoration of this 80th anniversary.     Environmental Anthropology Engaging Ecotopia An Introduction Joshua Lockyer and James R. Veteto We are living in a utopian moment. The majority of humans are already be- ing negatively affected by a number of coupled social and environmental crises. These conditions are created in large part by hegemony of thought and practice that ontologically separates humans from nature, rationalizes the externalization of the social and environmental costs of production and consumption, justifi es extreme inequality, and sees solutions only in a continuation of the same systems that generated the problems in the fi rst place. Together these and other problems constitute a crisis that demands imaginative responses and viable alternatives. We contend that anthropol- ogy must fi nd ways to engage with such existing possibilities. The present crises are not new; the fundamental idea that the current situation cannot continue was recognized decades ago with the rise of international discourse on the topic of sustainable development (Brundt- land 1987). The widely promoted concept of sustainability is ultimately utopian in nature; it is the good state that we must strive for but may not actually exist except in theory. Despite our best efforts, we do not know exactly what a sustainable society looks like. This has been the paradox of utopianism since Sir Thomas More ([1516] 1906) coined the term “utopia” in 1516, and it is the paradox of sustainability today. Here we invite discussion about the influence of beauty on ecological research by outlining: 1) how aesthetics affect the practice of ecology, and 2) how aesthetics affect the implementation of ecological research on the landscape. The aesthetic sensibilities of ecologists develop through personal experiences and are enriched by professional training, including ecological coursework, fieldwork, research and discussion.

BROWN A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2014 Copyright Charles Ross Owens 2014 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Although smart phone technology has been around several years, researchers are just now beginning to understand the impact of constantly being linked in to a network of information exchanges between and among users. Because smart phone technology has become commonplace in many developed nations such as the United States, the need to identify and observe its biological, social, and cultural impact is crucial. This investigation offers a benchmark analysis of users’ perceptions of their own attachment to their smart phone devices, as well as to what extent this attachment can be measured through sympathetic nervous system response. Using skin conductance as a biomarker and a series of interviews including Cohen’s Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL), it was determined that users do self-report a strong attachment to their devices. However, this attachment was not able to be captured through strict observation of skin conductance response alone during an experimental challenge when a text message was received. Rather, skin conductance level coupled with informants’ interview responses yielded positive correlations between feeling anxious when the device is not nearby and with a perception that having a smart phone has dramatically changed the users’ lives.

Following a review of the emergence of the “new ecology” and the highlighting of contrasts with earlier “balance of nature” perspectives, work emerging from ecological anthropology, political ecology, environmental and ecological economics, and debates about nature and culture are examined. With some important exceptions, much social science work and associated popular and policy debates remain firmly wedded to a static and equilibrial view. This review turns to three areas where a more dynamic perspective has emerged. Each has the potential to take central elements of new ecological thinking seri- ously, sometimes with major practical consequences for planning, intervention by CAPES on 10/27/05.     CHAPTER 3 Paradigms in Collision The Far-Reaching Controversy Over the Samoan Researches of Margaret Mead and its Significance for the Human Sciences In September of 1983, Victor Turner, a gifted British social anthropologist who had become Professor of Anthropology in the University of Virginia, published an historic essay entitled ‘Body, Brain and Culture’. I say ‘historic’ because it was Victor Turner’s last essay, and because in it, drawing on the researches of the evolutionary neuroscientist Paul MacLean, Turner radically questioned the principal assumption that he and other anthropologists of the 20th century had been ‘taught to hallow’ the assumption that ‘all human behavior is the result of social conditioning’. Earlier that year, Harvard University Press had published a book of mine in which I presented a refutation of Margaret Mead’s long-accepted apparent proof of this same assumption in her book of 1928, Coming of Age in Samoa. In it, citing the researches of MacLean and others, I argued for the adoption by anthropology and of all the human sciences of an interactionist paradigm in which both biology and culture are taken into account. Since then there has been a steadily increasing recognition of the virtues of this new paradigm, and, there are clear signs that the human sciences are undergoing a paradigm shift. According to Marxist doctrine it is ‘social existence’ that determines ‘human consciousness’, and by the Bolsheviks of Soviet Russia it was fervently believed that under communism, human nature would radically 45 DILTHEY'S DREAM and permanently change. By the early 1930s American observers who had visited Russia were claiming that this had already begun to happen: ‘mental hygiene’, it was said, was ‘inherent in the social organization’.
