Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

What makes anyone think that “theology” is a subject at all?” (Richard Dawkins)1 On September 15, 2001, only 4 days after the terrorist attack to the World Trade Center in New York, Richard Dawkins – evolutionary biologist, 65 years, professor of public understanding of science at the University of Oxford – published an incisive article on the renowned English newspaper The Guardian, with the impressive title “Religion’s misguided missiles,” where he stated: “Those people were not mindless and they were certainly not cowards. On the contrary, they had sufficiently effective minds braced with an insane courage, and it would pay us mightily to understand where that courage came from. It came from religion. Religion is also, of course, the underlying source of the divisiveness in the Middle East... To fill a world with religion, or religions of the Abrahamic kind, is like littering the streets with loaded guns. Do not be surprised if they are used”.2 1 Without losing the courage and creativity that have characterized Dawkins since his first book, The selfish gene,3 launched 30 years ago, the British scientist now launches a dense and solid critical work on the logical and scientific bases of religious thinking: The God delusion. The title is a bit more sarcastic than it looks. -

A Dangerous Idea Dennett considers Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection the best single idea that anyone ever had.But it has also turned out to be a dangerous one. Science has accepted the theory as the most accurate explanation of the intricate design of living beings,but when it was first proposed,and again in recent times,the theory has met with a backlash from many people.What makes evolution so threatening,when theories in physics and chemistry seem so harmless? One problem with the introduction of Darwin’s great idea is that almost no one was prepared for such a revolutionary view of creation. Dennett gives an analogy between this inversion and Sweden’s change in driving direction: I’m going to imagine, would it be dangerous if tomorrow the people in Great Britain started driving on the right? In psychology and anthropology, and especially in ecology, evolution, neurobiology, and developmental biology, where the Carte- sian program has failed to give satisfaction, we hear more and more calls for an alternative epistemological stance. Introduction The world of classical physics proposed a view of nature where systems behaved like machines: they were reducible to their parts, governed by universal laws (which were moreover time-reversal invariant), and thus representable by an axiomatized discourse where predictable events could be deduced, given the correct boundary conditions. Thus, the philosophers of science of the early and mid-twentieth century happily offered the Deductive-Nomological Model of Explanation (and Prediction). It fit Newton’s Principia, Book I, Proposition XI pretty well. However, it doesn’t really account for Book III, the development of the theory and practice of differential equations, the n-body problem, electro-magnetic phenomena, thermodynamics, atoms, galaxies or the expanding universe, limitations that even Thomas Kuhn, author of the revolutionary book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, (University of Chicago Press, 1962) played down. But the philosophers did notice that the Deductive-Nomological Model of Explanation wasn’t a very good fit for biology, as after Darwin it struggled to account for natural history with its attendant one-way temporality, the emergence of novelty, and the intentionality and nested downwards complexity of living things, that seemed so stubbornly un-machine-like. The discovery of DNA and the rise of a new kind of machine, the computer, briefly encouraged philosophers (and scientists) to think that biology might finally look like a real science, populated by tiny robots that lend themselves to axioms and predictions; but, alas.
