DIRECTOR’S NOTES Range Roads is a very personal film for me. After my first feature film, The Valley Below (2014), I was at a crossroads. I was about to have my first child, my father had recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and I was reevaluating many of my life and career choices. There were a lot of existential questions at that time around death, purpose, identity, and family. Range Roads became a way for me to work through some of that.

With Range Roads, I wanted to create well rounded and relatable characters and allow the narrative to evolve from there. With this as a point of entry, I began to develop the characters (Frankie and Grayson) over several years alongside the actors who portrayed them (Alana Hawley Purvis and Joe Perry). Through multiple workshops over several years the characters evolved and grew more defined, ultimately helping to guide me through the scriptwriting process. When we meet Frankie, she is at a crossroads in her life. She’s questioning her past decisions, her idea of success, and ultimately her path forward. In contrast, her estranged brother Grayson seems content with his roots firmly planted in the rural community that they grew up in. This is the primary source of conflict between them with the death of their parents serving as the catalyst for their reunion.

At its core Range Roads is about family and self-acceptance. It’s about the people and places we are tethered to, for better or worse, and how in the face of tragedy, loss and conflict, it is possible to heal past wounds and find a better road forward.
