Genre: Drama Sales Inquiries Runtime: 86 Minutes Language: English Country of Production: Canada (Alberta) Genre: Drama Sales Inquiries: Media Inquiries: North Country Cinema TARO PR Kyle Thomas Brianna Hurley [email protected] brianna@taropr.com LOGLINE Television actor Frankie King struggles to confront the past when she returns to her hometown in rural Alberta after her parents are killed in a tragic car accident. SYNOPSIS When her parents are killed in a sudden car accident, television actor Frankie King (Alana Hawley Purvis) returns to her hometown in rural Alberta to face this tragedy after being estranged from her family for 20 years. As she struggles to reconnect with her truculent brother Grayson (Joe Perry), old wounds are reopened and family secrets uncovered. Range Roads is an intimate story of grief, longing, and forgiveness, that explores the painful and beautiful complexities of what it means to be a family. MEDIA IMAGE #1 Frankie (Alana Hawley Purvis) photo credit: Mike McLaughlin MEDIA IMAGE #2 Frankie & Bruce (Alana Hawley Purvis, Chad Brownlee) photo credit: Mike McLaughlin TEASER: https://vimeo.com/421302940 DIRECTOR’S NOTES Range Roads is a very personal film for me. After my first feature film, The Valley Below (2014), I was at a crossroads. I was about to have my first child, my father had recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and I was reevaluating many of my life and career choices. There were a lot of existential questions at that time around death, purpose, identity, and family. Range Roads became a way for me to work through some of that. With Range Roads, I wanted to create well rounded and relatable characters and allow the narrative to evolve from there. With this as a point of entry, I began to develop the characters (Frankie and Grayson) over several years alongside the actors who portrayed them (Alana Hawley Purvis and Joe Perry). Through multiple workshops over several years the characters evolved and grew more defined, ultimately helping to guide me through the scriptwriting process. When we meet Frankie, she is at a crossroads in her life. She’s questioning her past decisions, her idea of success, and ultimately her path forward. In contrast, her estranged brother Grayson seems content with his roots firmly planted in the rural community that they grew up in. This is the primary source of conflict between them with the death of their parents serving as the catalyst for their reunion. At its core Range Roads is about family and self-acceptance. It’s about the people and places we are tethered to, for better or worse, and how in the face of tragedy, loss and conflict, it is possible to heal past wounds and find a better road forward. Max combines narrative genres (science fiction and film noir), television program types (prime-time episodic narrative, made-for-TV movie, talkshows), advertising and programming, and electronic and print media. Analysis of one channel of discourse, commercials and advertising, shows that neither advertisers nor textual theorists can rest safely on their assumptions. The text involved here is complex in the very sense that culture itself is complex, and readings of media that reduce complexity to a simplistic ideological positioning of readers are reductive and based on an overprivileging of dominance over the intelligence of viewers, and their power to expose and exploit contradictory textual elements. By over-emphasizing the hegemonic and deemphasizing the emancipatory or oppositional, injustice is done to both the complexity of texts, and their potential for encouraging critical positionings among readers. Only through empirical investigation of individuals' readings in a consistent and systematic fashion will it be possible to determine the relationships between viewers and texts.
