  • Telefilm Canada Announces 18 Micro-‐Budget
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Telefilm Canada announces 18 Micro-Budget Production Program finalists for 2016-2017 Talent Fund financing 77% of the Program this year Montreal, June 16, 2016—Telefilm Canada today announced the 18 finalists, representing all regions of the country, for the Micro-Budget Production Program for 2016-2017. Telefilm also announced that the Talent Fund, a private donation fund, is financing 77% of the Program this year, thanks in particular to numerous donors and principal partners Bell Media and Corus Entertainment. Technicolor is also continuing to offer free digital distribution encoding to finalists. Hartley T. Richardson, Chair of the Talent Fund Advisory Committee, stated: “Investing in emerging talent means investing in innovation, creativity and passion. Members of the advisory committee witnessed this when they recently met with the teams behind two projects funded through the Program, Cardinal and The Space Between. We were tremendously impressed by their vision and engagement. The Talent Fund provides Canadians with a unique opportunity to support homegrown talent and realize that their investments have a profound impact.” Carolle Brabant, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada, added: “The Micro-Budget Production Program shows that Canada’s new generation of filmmakers is diversified. After the success achieved at both Canadian and foreign film festivals by Christian Sparkes (Cast No Shadow), Julie Lambert (Un film de chasse de filles), Kyle Thomas (The Valley Below), Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy (The Editor), Suzanne Crocker (All the Time in the World) as well as Aboriginal filmmakers Sonia Bonspille Boileau (Le dep) and Adam Garnet Jones (Fire Song), it’s worth noting that two films funded through the Program will be screened at the 2016 Shanghai International Film Festival: The Devout (Connor Gaston) and The Space Between (Amy Jo Johnson).” This is the fourth annual round of projects in the Micro-Budget Production Program.

  • Filmmakers Ready to Converge on the 15Th Annual Gimli Film Festival
Filmmakers ready to converge on the th 15 Annual Gimli Film Festival (Winnipeg, Manitoba; July 14, 2015) – This year’s Gimli Film Festival will play host to an exciting myriad of filmmakers, who originate from across Canada and right here in our own backyard. GFF welcomes the following special guests, among others. Oscar-nominated, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson (born in Iceland, now residing in Toronto) is the director of ‘Monsoon’, a feature documentary that’s been described as “Part road movie, part spectacle, part drama”. Filmed over the course of India’s 2013 monsoon season in ultra high definition 4K, the filmmakers followed the monsoon on its annual journey from the southern state of Kerala, where it first makes landfall, to India's north- eastern state of Meghalaya, where the clouds go to die—along the way, documenting a remarkable group of individuals whose lives are intricately entwined with the monsoon, or ‘soul of India'. GFF Alumni Kyle Thomas of Calgary ([email protected]) paints an intimate portrait of life on the Alberta Badlands in his first feature film, “The Valley Below”. Thomas’ film is divided into four self-contained vignettes, depicting the private lives and longings of four different Drumheller residents over the course of a year. Thomas was a 2014 recipient of the prestigious Lieutenant Governor General of Alberta Arts Award, and has produced a range of award-winning short films since 2011. Vancouver director-producer Catharine Parke’s ([email protected]) Canadian Short film "Very Good Dirt" is a haunting documentary about the western Manitoba ghost town of McConnell.

SYNOPSIS When her parents are killed in a sudden car accident, television actor Frankie King (Alana Hawley Purvis) returns to her hometown in rural Alberta to face this tragedy after being estranged from her family for 20 years. As she struggles to reconnect with her truculent brother Grayson (Joe Perry), old wounds are reopened and family secrets uncovered. Range Roads is an intimate story of grief, longing, and forgiveness, that explores the painful and beautiful complexities of what it means to be a family. After my first feature film, The Valley Below (2014), I was at a crossroads. I was about to have my first child, my father had recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and I was reevaluating many of my life and career choices. There were a lot of existential questions at that time around death, purpose, identity, and family. Range Roads became a way for me to work through some of that. With Range Roads, I wanted to create well rounded and relatable characters and allow the narrative to evolve from there.
