  • Whose Middlemarch? the 1994 British Broadcasting Corporation Television Production MARGARET HARRIS
SYDNEY STUDIES Whose Middlemarch? The 1994 British Broadcasting Corporation Television Production MARGARET HARRIS The BBC television serialization of Middlemarch was a major media event in the United Kingdom at the beginning of 1994. Commentators put it about that it was a do-or-die effort: the BBC classic serial was in danger, because costume drama had been decreed to be obsolete, part of the dowdy Auntie Beeb stereotype, no longer good for ratings. And so with a budget of over £6 million for six episodes, making six and a half hours of viewing, and considerable promotion, Middlemarch went to air in January 1994 (and was shown later in the year in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere») Its success was never in doubt. In one week Middlemarch was seen by 5.5 million viewers, rating high among BBC2's programs, and topping the paperback bestseller list. Penguin Classics took the opportunity to send off W. J. Harvey's now venerable (1965) edition of Middlemarch with a TV tie-in cover, and to issue a new Penguin Classic edition, prepared by Rosemary Ashton, a leading British George Eliot scholar. In the United States, a revamped Modern Library edition, with a foreword by the novelist A. S. Byatt, came out. Ashton also had a major part in the BBC's production of a two-hour television documentary on George Eliot and her fiction, in which Byatt appeared along with other critics and commen tators. Another programme on 'The Making of Middlemarch' dwelt on the logistics of transforming modern-day Stamford into 'Middlemarch' in the 1820s by such devices as adding a suitably aged fibreglass portico to the Arts and Tourist Information Centre to turn it into the White Hart Hotel; hiding telephone cables, letter boxes, exhaust fans, and Middlemarch was a co-production of the British Broadcasting Corpo ration and the Boston, Mass., Public Broadcasting System, 1994.

Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Alison Findlay. Without her advice, kindness and patience, I would be completely lost. It is magical how she could help a man who knew so little about Shakespeare in performance to complete this thesis. I am forever indebted to her. I am also indebted to Dr. Liz Oakley-Brown, Professor Geraldine Harris, Dr. Karen Juers-Munby, Dr. Kamilla Elliott, Professor Hilary Hinds and Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves for their helpful suggestions during the annual, upgrade, mock viva and viva panels. I would like to acknowledge the Shakespeare Centre Library and Archive, the National Theatre Archive, the Shakespeare’s Globe Library and Archives, the Theatre Collection at the University of Bristol, the National Art Library and the Folger Shakespeare Library on where many of my materials are based. Moreover, I am extremely grateful to Mr. Phil Willmott who gave me an opportunity to interview him. I also would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation to Thailand’s Office of the Higher Education Commission for finically supporting my study and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University for allowing me to pursue it.

  • INVESTIGATING the STYLE, FORM and GENRE of PERIOD DRAMA in 2010S BRITISH TELEVISION
A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2020 HERITAGE AND POST-HERITAGE: INVESTIGATING THE STYLE, FORM AND GENRE OF PERIOD DRAMA IN 2010s BRITISH TELEVISION WILL STANFORD This image is unavailable. Please consult reference on page ii for further information. ABBISS ii ABSTRACT This project analyses six period drama productions in British television of the 2010s, expanding Claire Monk’s term of ‘post-heritage’ into a critical framework. Its case studies establish a cycle of progressive representations of the past in recent television drama, which operate against the assumptions of ‘heritage’ nostalgia forwarded by earlier scholars. The post-heritage framework consists of five guiding elements: interrogation, subversion, subjectivity, self-consciousness and ambiguity. These inform the analysis of the project’s case studies, while also allowing the existence of post-heritage elements to be recognised in earlier period drama productions. The thesis is split into three distinct parts, which allow the heritage and post-heritage elements of the case studies to be associated with the characteristics and theoretical concepts of television drama. The first chapter of each part evaluates the institutional context of its case study, identifying its impact upon production through textual examples from the programme. The second chapter of each part focuses on close analysis, demonstrating the extent to which post- heritage elements can assist innovation in television drama. Part I focuses on televisual style, identifying the naturalist, realist and modernist aesthetics of television drama. Scholarly sources are used to connect these with periods of British television history.

In contrast to many other studies in this field, such productions are understood as both adaptations and „costume dramas‟, whilst the often neglected televisual context is highlighted alongside the paratexts which shape and surround adaptations. At the same time, the enduring (yet often dismissed) notion of „fidelity‟ is recognised and developed, as expectations of faithfulness extend beyond the literary text to privilege the legacies of prior adaptations.
