Regie: Tony Richardson Einführung: Prof.`in Dr. Marion Bönnighausen (Münster) Nach seinen filmischen Anfängen im Free Cinema der 50er Jahre wurde Tony Richardson zu einem der wichtigsten Exponenten der British New Wave. Wie bei vielen Vertretern dieser Schule basiert auch sein Film „Die Einsamkeit des Langstreckenläufers“ auf dem Text eines ‚zornigen jungen Mannes‘, der gleich- namigen Kurzgeschichte Alan Sillitoes, die dieser selbst zu einem Drehbuch umschrieb. Colin ist ein jugendlicher Delinquent aus der Arbeiterklasse – und ein guter Langstreckenläufer. Als im Jugendstrafvollzug sein besonderes Talent entdeckt wird, verschafft ihm dies zunächst Privilegien; als der Anstaltsdirektor ihn aber als sein bestes Pferd gegen die Läufer eines Eliteinternats ins Rennen schicken möchte, erteilt er ihm eine Lektion. In naturalistischen Schwarz - weißbildern zeichnet Richardson ein präzises Spiegelbild der britischen Klassengesellschaft mit ihren bigotten Moralprinzipien, ihrem Anpassungsdruck und ihren repressiven Mechanismen. Diese Substanz aggressiver Zeitkritik wird von dem melancholisch- poetischen Grundton dieser äußerst gelungenen Literaturverfilmung eher verstärkt als abgemildert. Bringing 2CELLOS’ game-changing sound and style to the most popular melodies ever written for classic and contemporary movies and television, Score will be supported by a world tour, kicking off with its U.S. leg in July 2017. An international sensation since their unique video version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” rocked YouTube with millions of hits in 2011, the Croatian cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser have created three high-energy albums for Sony Music Masterworks. Score finds them exploring a more traditional sound-world. Joining them here – to provide the ideal aural backdrop to their virtuosity – is the London Symphony Orchestra, with conductor/arranger Robin Smith at the helm. Šulić and Hauser also co-produced Score with Nick Patrick (Elvis Presley/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Russell Watson, Il Divo, Plácido Domingo). “We love movie music! SYDNEY STUDIES Whose Middlemarch? The 1994 British Broadcasting Corporation Television Production MARGARET HARRIS The BBC television serialization of Middlemarch was a major media event in the United Kingdom at the beginning of 1994. Commentators put it about that it was a do-or-die effort: the BBC classic serial was in danger, because costume drama had been decreed to be obsolete, part of the dowdy Auntie Beeb stereotype, no longer good for ratings. And so with a budget of over £6 million for six episodes, making six and a half hours of viewing, and considerable promotion, Middlemarch went to air in January 1994 (and was shown later in the year in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere») Its success was never in doubt. In one week Middlemarch was seen by 5.5 million viewers, rating high among BBC2's programs, and topping the paperback bestseller list. Penguin Classics took the opportunity to send off W. J. Harvey's now venerable (1965) edition of Middlemarch with a TV tie-in cover, and to issue a new Penguin Classic edition, prepared by Rosemary Ashton, a leading British George Eliot scholar. In the United States, a revamped Modern Library edition, with a foreword by the novelist A. S. Byatt, came out. Ashton also had a major part in the BBC's production of a two-hour television documentary on George Eliot and her fiction, in which Byatt appeared along with other critics and commen tators. Another programme on 'The Making of Middlemarch' dwelt on the logistics of transforming modern-day Stamford into 'Middlemarch' in the 1820s by such devices as adding a suitably aged fibreglass portico to the Arts and Tourist Information Centre to turn it into the White Hart Hotel; hiding telephone cables, letter boxes, exhaust fans, and Middlemarch was a co-production of the British Broadcasting Corpo ration and the Boston, Mass., Public Broadcasting System, 1994. -

RICHARD HARVEY SELECTED CREDITS THE LITTLE PRINCE (2015) (co-composer) INTERSTELLAR (2014) (conductor) DEATH OF A PRESIDENT (2006) (composer) THE DA VINCI CODE (2006) (conductor, composer: “Kyrie for the Magdalene”) LUTHER (2003) (composer) BIOGRAPHY Since graduating from the Royal College of Music in 1972, at the age of 18, Richard Harvey has been a ubiquitous and diverse presence on the London music scene, not only as a prolific composer and conductor but an exceptional virtuoso performer of almost 700 instruments from around the world - blown, plucked, keyed, bowed, beaten and programmed. Richard's early forays into the professional world involved performing on medieval and Renaissance-era instruments with early music ensemble Musica Reservata, and his own progressive rock and folk band, Gryphon, in which he toured three continents, recorded five albums, and played over 30 different instruments. Richard has come a long way since starting recorder lessons at the age of four, progressing via a stint as first clarinet with the British Youth Symphony Orchestra to recording for and collaborating with major contemporary composers including John Williams, Stanley Myers, Harry Gregson-Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and many others. Most recently Richard and long term collaborator and Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer co- composed the score for Onyx’s 2016 production ‘The Little Prince’, an enchanting animation directed by Mark Osborne. Prior to this, Richard conducted the orchestra for Hans Zimmer’s 2014 ‘Interstellar’, an adventure sci-fi starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Richard’s collaborations continued in 2014 with Bill Conran with a co- composition for the score of horror film, ‘Curse of the Pheonix’. -
