A Study of Chinese and Us Youth Literature About The "FRIENDS AND FOES ON THE BATTLEFIELD": A STUDY OF CHINESE AND U.S. YOUTH LITERATURE ABOUT THE SINO-JAPANESE WAR (1937-1945) BY MINJIE CHEN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Betsy Hearne, Chair & Director of Research Associate Professor Christine Jenkins Assistant Professor Dan Shao Assistant Professor Carol Tilley Abstract In order to understand how postwar generations’ understanding of the history of World War II has been shaped by the information sources made available to them, this dissertation examines the representation of the Sino-Japanese War (1937-45)—fought between Imperial Japan and China, with U.S. as the latter’s major military ally—in youth literature published in mainland China and the United States from 1937 through 2007. The study is based on a sociopolitical analysis of the historical context in which Chinese and American youth literature about ethnic Chinese experiences during the Second World War was produced; a content analysis of 360 titles of illustrated popular reading materials in Chinese; and a literary and visual analysis of important works of youth literature in both countries. Those who obtained the opportunity to “tell” the war history, which part of it they told, and how they told it were all highly politicized. In China, the subject matter and main themes of war stories served the shifting agendas and needs that might or might not be shared among different political and interest groups, from the war years, through the establishment of the Communist regime in 1949, to the post-Mao era after 1976. Further comparison between public literary sources about the war and Chinese private memories of it suggest a chasm between the ruling Party’s master narrative and the way individuals remember their own experiences during the years of 1937-45. In the United States, the narrative space for ethnic Chinese wartime experiences expanded or contracted in a racialized society that perpetuated Asian Americans’ alien identity. The result was a dearth of information that could help ethnic Chinese youth to understand their ancestors’ role during the war and, in the larger American society, amnesia about a military conflict with ongoing political, economic, and social ramifications. ii To victims of Japan’s biological warfare at Yunhe County, Zhejiang Province, China, and to the memory of my grandmother, XU Lannü ( 徐兰女, 1925-1997) iii Acknowledgments This project would not have been possible without the support of many people. Chinese children’s literature scholars FANG Weiping ( 方卫平), WANG Quangen (王泉根) and MEI Zihan (梅子涵) shared with me their great insights into my research. My parents, now a retired elemenatary school teacher and a retired public librarian, were the first ones to tell me about Japanese biological warfare in Yunhe, China, and to instill in me an interest in children’s literature and the Chinese history of the twentieth century. Towards a Psychobiographical Study of Lin Yutang Roslyn Joy Ricci School of Social Science/Centre for Asian Studies University of Adelaide November 2013 Abstract Dr Lin Yutang, philologist, philosopher, novelist and inventor was America’s most influential native informant on Chinese culture from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s. Theoretical analysis of Lin’s accomplishments is an ongoing focus of research on both sides of the North Pacific: this study suggests why he made particular choices and reacted in specific ways during his lifetime. Psychobiographical theory forms the framework for this research because it provides a structure for searching within texts to understand why Lin made choices that led to his lasting contribution to transcultural literature. It looks at foundational beliefs established in his childhood and youth, at why significant events in adulthood either reinforced or altered these and why some circumstances initiated new beliefs. Lin’s life is viewed through thematic lenses: foundational factors; scholarship and vocation; the influence of women; peer input; and religion, philosophy and humour. Most of his empirical life journey is already documented: this thesis suggests why he felt compelled to act and write as he did. In doing so, it offers possible scenarios of why Lin’s talents developed and why his life journey evolved in a particular manner, place and time. For example, it shows the way in which basic beliefs—formed during Lin’s childhood and youth and later specific events in adulthood—affected his life’s journey. It analyses how his exposure to the theories of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism affected his early childhood basic belief—Christianity—and argues that he accommodated traditional Chinese beliefs within Christianity.

    About the Contributors Special Forum – Charting Transnational Native American Studies JONI ADAMSON is Associate Professor of English and Environmental Humanities in the School of Letters and Sciences and a Senior Research Scholar at the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University. She is at work on two new collections, Keywords in the Study of Environment and Culture (NYU Press, forthcoming) and American Studies, Ecocriticism, and Citizenship (Routledge, forthcoming 2012). CHADWICK ALLEN is Associate Professor of English and the Coordinator for the American Indian Studies Program at The Ohio State University. He is the author of Blood Narrative: Indigenous Identity in American Indian and Maori Literary and Activist Texts (Duke University Press, 2002) and Trans-Indigenous: Methodologies for Global Native Literary Studies (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming 2012) and the submissions editor for the journal SAIL: Studies in American Indian Literatures. JOSEPH BAUERKEMPER is Assistant Professor in the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he teaches courses in politics, literature, and law. He previously held postdoctoral fellowships in the American Indian Studies Program at the University of Illinois and the Andrew W. Mellon Program for the study of “Cultures in Transnational Perspective” at the University of California, Los Angeles. PHILIP J. DELORIA is the Carroll Smith-Rosenberg Collegiate Professor in the Departments of History and American Culture at the University of Michigan and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. He is the author of Playing Indian and Indians in Unexpected Places, as well as numerous articles, essays, and reviews.
