Measuring Patient Satisfaction Parameters: a Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study at PNS RAHAT Hospital Karachi
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Measuring Patient Satisfaction Parameters: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study At PNS RAHAT Hospital Karachi. Naila Azam1, Sikandar Hayat Khan2 ABSTRACT Objective: To describe patient satisfaction with hospital services and staff dealing. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January to April-2011 at out-patient departments of PNS Rahat. Randomly selected 96 patients entitled to free medical treatment were offered to voluntarily fill the pretested structured questionnaire in URDU(with mathematical scoring for each selected satisfaction index selected) to comment on the various aspects of services offered at the hospital. The four objective satisfaction scores included: 1-seating /waiting facilities, 2-length of waiting time, 3-staff attitude and 4-Cleanliness at the outpatient departments, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy. Results: The availed mean score was 80.1 + 42.6. Out of the total possible score of 170 of the questionnaires filled. The mean patient score achieved was 57.4 + 33.9. Patients scored less on the satisfaction indices pertaining to waiting time [Average score=4.73/10] and comfortable stay [Average score=6.43/10] in the waiting areas of the hospital OPDs. Patients had a higher satisfaction score on indices related to sanitation/cleanliness issues [Average score=7.52/10] and staff attitude [Average score=7.71/10]. Conclusion: Prolonged waiting time and non-availability of quality stay in waiting areas of outpatient departments and diagnostic centers are the cause of -

FEATURE Russia–Pakistan Strategic Relations An Emerging Entente Cordiale FEROZ HASSAN KHAN ince the famous American raid in 2011 that killed Osama bin Laden and given the US exceptional favor to India’s nuclear ambitions, Islamabad has gradually moved away from the United States, deepened Pakistan’s relations Swith China, and sought rapprochement with Russia. While Pakistan’s strategic relations with China have been developing for more than five decades, Islamabad’s relations with Moscow are new, evolving for less than a decade. Russia has always preferred India to Pakistan and shied away from any proactive role in conflict reso- lution between India and Pakistan. Additionally, Russia has been unsure of Paki- stan’s future and its strategic direction. In South Asia, Moscow seems to balance Russia’s interests proportionate to the strategic importance and economic advan- tage that each nation offers. Pakistan is a relatively small power undergoing internal and economic perils. It cannot match India’s power potential and offer the same scope of political, strategic, and economic influence that India wields in its rela- tions with major powers. Yet, Pakistan is a very important piece in the emerging geopolitical chessboard in Eurasia. Notwithstanding the handicap of perpetual asymmetry vis- à- vis India, Pakistan leverages its geophysical location, strong mili- tary with advancing nuclear capability, and considerable influence in the Islamic world in its conduct of international relations. In the past, Pakistan and Russia could not develop close ties because neither country fully trusted the other. However, given the mutual benefits to building relations, as discussed in this article, both countries are trying to move forward past lingering mistrust. -

CADET COLLEGE PETARO – A COLLEGE WITH A DIFFERENCE Prof. Affan Maqsood, Ex-Professor & ex-Head of Dept. of English, CCP (1969-1996) (Currently Prof. Affan Maqsood is Head of Dept. of English at the Women’s Institute of Science and Humanities, Islamabad) The mere thought of Cadet College Petaro makes me nostalgic about the twenty seven years I spent at Petaro as a teacher of English. I joined as lecturer in English, and left as professor and Head of the Department of English, and Divisional Co- coordinator officer. Petaro is reminiscent of the golden period of my life. It was not merely a period of my teaching, but also a period of my grooming as a teacher of English. No doubt there are some other good cadet colleges in the country, Cadet College Hasan Abdal being perhaps the oldest with its own history and traditions. But of all the colleges, Cadet College Petaro stands at the climax. My opinion is neither based on my emotional attachment with this institution nor on prejudice against any other institution. Rather it is genuinely based on cogent reasons. I joined Cadet College Petaro on the 4th of September, 1969. If I am not mistaken, the same year or the next, Petaro won the President’s Sport Shield, by winning the Inter-Cadet College Sports Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. I do admit that Hasan Abdal has an excellent record in terms of extra-curricular activities, in general and academics in particular. The whole credit for this achievement does not go only to Hasan Abdal but also to the cadets, who are selected purely on merit. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT According to Britannica on line Encyclopedia ”A welfare state is a form of government in which the state protects and promotes the economic and social well- being of citizens, based upon the principles of equal opportunity, equitable distribution of wealth, and public responsibility for citizens unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions for a good life. The first and foremost policy of a welfare state is to provide basic facilities equally to all its citizens. Post-modern world is trying to gain a selective mechanism to reinstate the system of welfare as a political and economic theory. Most of Western welfare states establish ideas of Marxism, while the Islamic welfare state is based on teachings of Quran and Sunnah. The major difference between a western welfare state and an Islamic welfare state is based on the economic factor. Western theory of a welfare state is the theory of economic progress, while in an Islamic welfare state, the economic factor is just a part of a comprehensive system. According to some critics, the idea of an Islamic welfare state is obsolete because they believe that the codes and conducts used to establish an Islamic welfare state are no longer active.
